Right, this is only a short chapter and it's really a scene setter. The bit that was meant to be on the end of this will be on the beginning of the next chapter, I'm just not in the right mind set to write the emotional stuff (or at least to do it justice) so apologies for that.

I'm also not sure when the next update will be, it might take a few days for me to get my head sorted. I'll update as soon as I can.

Chapter 26

Geoff and Nicole were sat at the dining table when Roman unexpectedly returned from work a little after lunch time, they had almost finished their assignment but couldn't agree on the ending. Opening the front door, he could hear the punctuation marks of their conversation from outside.

“Hey, hey! What's going on here? World war 3? It's noisy enough!”

“More like the unstoppable force meets the immovable object! Nic has dug her heels in so far she's almost reached England!”

“You can talk, your photograph is in the dictionary next to the word mule!”

Roman cracked up, he grabbed a drink from the fridge and headed out of the kitchen.

“I'll leave you to it then, enjoy! Oh by the way Nic, your grounding has been suspended. Don't give me a reason the re-instate it please.”

Nicole's squeal of pleasure was almost as loud as the assignment discussion had been.

“I so wanna get out of here!”

Geoff grinned, spotting his opportunity.

“We're going nowhere until we've completed this.”

Nicole looked at him suspiciously but he made no further comment, he suspected she'd make the decision he wanted.

“Let's just go with your ending, I'm not wasting outside time arguing.”

Geoff smothered the desire for a victory dance and just nodded sagely, hurriedly writing in the ending. Nicole followed suit and they were quickly done.

“C'mon, the beach awaits.”

Geoff laughed at the excitement on Nic's face and packed his homework away.

“I'll come back and collect this after we've been to the beach.”

“You got swimwear with you?”

Geoff looked down at the board shorts he was wearing and then back at Nic, the question clear on his face.

“Guys! Give me a few minutes, some of us need to change!”

He started laughing as he watched her almost flounce out of the kitchen and go up stairs, she was so funny at times...not to mention seriously cute in a snit. It wasn't long before she was back, bouncing down the stairs in her eagerness to get going. She'd changed in record time, not stopping to even check her hair.

“You ready?”

Nicole turned as Geoff spoke.

“You do realise just how that question could be interpreted, don't you?”

Geoff looked back at her with wide eyed innocence, then blushed scarlet as her meaning sunk in.

“Y...you know me better than that, I'm the last person who'd mean...”

Nic's laughter stopped him and he looked away embarrassed, she knew just which buttons to press to get to him. Not having the patience to wait for his embarrassment to die down, Nic snagged his hand and tugged him out of the house – yelling a quick 'see ya later' to her dad.

The Beach was pretty busy, with the high school temporarily closed it seemed that most of the students had headed to the sand. Geoff and Nic, not really wanting too much attention headed away from the throngs – to the quieter area where she'd first kissed him. As they ran around the rocky outcropping that sheltered the area, they found some unexpected company.

“Well, well, well! If is isn't bible boy and the bad girl!”

The laughter in Aden's voice was undisguised and the others rapidly joined in, even Geoff didn't bristle at the gentle teasing.

“Hiding from the masses?”

Nicole's question caused another smatter of laughter and Belle replied.

“Something like that, just enjoying chilling out.”

Glancing at Aden with an unspoken question, he answered it.

“How about joining us? We can grab take-out from the diner and have a picnic.”

Geoff and Nic agreed, albeit a bit reluctantly. They didn't want to intrude on the privacy of the other couple, nor did they really want to come under scrutiny themselves. A short time later, everyone had relaxed. Childhood games re-appeared, mostly two on two but sometimes it was everyone for themselves. By late afternoon, the suggestion of a picnic was sounding good and the boys were dispatched to get food. Left alone with Belle, Nicole started to feel distinctly uneasy. Although there was no logical reason for her to be uneasy, she had the distinct impression that Belle was waiting for her to screw up. She was soon proved right.
