Chapter 30

Roman watched his former partner leave, it was clear that he was missing a large chunk of information. The question that had to be asked was, did Nic know any more than what she had told him? There really was only one way to find the answer to that question, he wasted no time in starting the ball rolling. He went to the bottom of the stairs.

“The coast is clear!”

His shout was loud enough that he could probably be heard down the street, but no matter! He went back to his chair and waited, door opened and closed and soon he was joined by four teenagers. Nic's face still showed the ravages of her crying jag, whilst Aden was wearing an expression of ill-concealed fury. Belle and Geoff appeared to be in a more temperate state of mind, but they'd probably had to be to cope with their respective partners.

“Nic, we need to talk about the city. If you'd prefer the other not to be here...”

“No, no...it's fine.”

Roman waited until they'd settled themselves, unable to hid the smile at the picture they made. Geoff and Nic on the couch, with Nic curled into Geoff as if he was necessary to her survival. Aden was sat in the other chair with Belle settled on the large floor cushion, her head resting on his knee. If only he had a camera close by!

“I need to know the rest of what happened in the city, I know there's some things you didn't tell me.”

Nic closed her eyes, embarrassment washing over her. Her father's pity was the last thing she wanted.

“Nic.”

She open her eyes an looked at Aden, the response he'd wanted.

“No-one here is going to feel sorry for you! Furious on your behalf? Probably. Upset that you didn't get the support you needed? Possibly. Respect that you've survived your past and turned into the person you are today? Almost certainly! Pity is no use to anyone, I think we all know that!”

There was a general murmur of agreement, Aden had one again hit the nail on the head. Roman couldn't help but be astonished at his level of insight, even more so at his ability to know exactly what to say. Nic looked into that steady gaze, she could see the shadows of a past she didn't know...they were still there. Despite his own demons, he wanted to help her face hers. One day she wanted to have that kind of strength.

“You know about the guy who came on to me when I was fifteen, you know he persisted in trying it on with me and you know about the abduction.”

There was a pause as Nic gathered her courage, all the while trying to find a less shaming way of explaining what had happened. She felt sick to her stomach, wanted to run and hide – but those days were behind her. Geoff arm wrapped around her more tightly and she continued.

“What you don't know, is they my mother wanted me to sleep with him.”

The silence was deafening, no-one said a word for several moments. Aden eventually broke the spell.

“Cold hearted bitch!”

His words were soft, but quite audible.

“Sounds about right.”

Belle's words were a bit raw, her contempt for Natalie obvious.

Nic wasn't done yet though.

“She...she got me pretty drunk a couple of times, said it was to make things easier for me. It didn't, I hated the feeling. I used to lock myself in my room, bolt it from the inside until morning. I don't know, it's almost as if she promised me to him – I know how ridiculous that sounds but still!”

Roman had gone white, whether from shock or fury no-one knew.

“Is there anything else I need to know Nic?”

Nic shrugged, her eyes filling with tears again.

“I think you know the rest. I already told you the stuff she said, that it was my fault. I was so messed up after the abduction I just couldn't cope, she hated me for that. Dad, she wanted me to sleep with this guy. She helped him try to force me! Don't let her take me back, please don't let her take me back.”

The tears were streaming down her face again, her slender frame shaking with fear. Roman moved to squat in front of his daughter, taking hold of her hands so that she'd look at him.

“I won't let her take you back Nic, this is your home now.”

His words were simple and his message clear, the emotion rang true and that very truth cut through the layers of fear. Nic untangled herself from Geoff and hurled herself into her dads arms, he hugged her tight before allowing her to escape. Aden felt that the tension needed to be broken, he love of causing trouble rose to the surface. At least it was for a good cause this time.

“Can I ask you one question Nic?”

There was something in Aden's voice that alerted her to the potential for trouble.

“You can ask I guess.”

“This hard core party girl image, it was just a”

He was silenced by a cushion flying at him, Belle hurriedly ducking for cover before she was caught in the cross fire.

“The party girl was a real as your super stud routine!”

The comeback had it's desired effect, leaving Aden temporarily speechless. Belle and Geoff were the ones in tears now, as the verbal comebacks descended into two way tickle torture...Aden claiming victory eventually.

“I need to talk to Natalie again, I want you kids to stay here please. Don't let her in if she returns, just call me directly.”

With sounds of agreement all round, Roman made his exit. Geoff was regarding Aden with some curiosity, when it was noticed he asked the question that had been on his mind.

“How is it that you seem to understand everything that Nic is going through?”
