suzannelgnz Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 I wonder what other vegetarians's motives are ? I love animals but that isn't my main reason.. why i'm vegan.. it's like i have no choice??? Am i the only one who thinks "meat is gross"??? or no, meat is murder??? My Motives, were not really based on Animal welfare or anything (although I do love animals).Maithee, I'm the same- I sometimes dry retch at the smell of some meats cooking, My family have never been appreciative of my decision to become Vego but i'd have it no other way.Luckily I have some very supportive friends, one of whom has been a vego since she tried Meat as a baby (and hated it).I can also sympathise with you about stuff being fried in animal fats or containing hidden animal products (ie. Stocks), I usually ask or read labels and if they can't tell me I just go somewhere else.
superman's girlfriend Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 If we all had to slaughter our meals there'd be a lot more vegetarians out there Here's an article about How humans are not physically created to eat meat
Cal Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 On the subject of becoming vegetarian because of animal cruelty... I was walking down a street in Dublin in November and I came across something rather silly. There were a bunch of anti-fur protesters protesting outside a tiny little independent business which sold hats with some fur on them. I had a few problems with this. One being there was a Benetton a few minutes away and they abuse sheep for testing and they make millions of euro a year. This little shop was run by a young person who buys products from wholesalers, but they were losing customers because the protesters were blocking the door to the shop. I'm all for standing up for what you believe in, but that person had the right to open this store and sell items. Don't be angry at the retailer, be angry at the manufacturer. The second thing I had a problem with was that all of the protesters were wearing LEATHER boots. Call me a dumbass, but what's the point of campaigning for animal rights when you're wearing shoes made from animal skin? It made me smile.

I hate those kind of protesters and they should get a life they're missing the point!
Lise Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 My Aunty is a vegetarian because she used to get frequent migrains and a friend of her's told her that she should stop eating meat. Ever since then her migrains are a lot less common. She says she doesn't miss eating meat.
*Maddie* Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 I watched an episode of South Park yesterday where the boys were saving baby cows from being turned into veal, because the cows were tied up and not allowed to move and it was cruel. It made me think, "I never want to eat veal again!" ... but then I got served veal for dinner, and I was hungry and feeling weak... so I ate it... but afterward, I suggested that my parents shouldn't buy veal anymore. I like meat, and I understand that animals have to die for me to eat it, but I don't understand why they should have to suffer as well. If I was buying my own meat, I'd try to make sure it was free range, but it's difficult to do that when my parents are in charge and I don't like making a fuss. It's also hard at restaurants and fast food places, because there's no way to know. You can only hope that what you're eating died a quick and relatively painless death, and appreciate that it's death will make your own life healthier, because I don't believe that the benefits of protein and iron are just propaganda. I have little fangs for a reason.
suzannelgnz Posted October 1, 2009 Report Posted October 1, 2009 Bumping this thread since it's World Vegetarian day today (1st October)
jenlee Posted October 1, 2009 Report Posted October 1, 2009 ^Heehee, I came on here to do the same thing.
TelephotoMarigold Posted October 2, 2009 Report Posted October 2, 2009 I became a vegetarian on the 1st June 1992. I spent the six months before that cutting out red meat and only eating chicken and fish. I gave up meat because I found out how chickens are killed and how cows are killed and how foie gras pate is made and veal is produced and it made me sick to my stomach... I no longer need to take viatmin supplements because I have a balanced diet that includes a lot of vegetarian products usually made from Soya. I have been borderline anemic on a few occasions and if you listen to my mother I have never "been right" since I gave up meat. We do indeed have Canine teeth... you'll find them next to the molars we have for grinding seeds and corn and eating vegetables which you'll find you have more of... I don't buy leather shoes... and haven't since 92. I will cook meat for friends... just as I also cook vegie food for the same friends... I don't care if you are a meat eater or vegie, (obviously I would prefer you to be the latter!) because I would hope that my views would be accepted rather than have to endure countless debates... If I'm in a position where someone is having a go at me about it I feel its justified to quote some facts and figures about meat production...
