4. “There are 2 roads to choose from and only one road to take.”

It wasn’t until his legs started to cramp that Jack finally looked up at the clock and realised that they had been sat on the floor for nearly an hour.

“Martha,” Jack coaxed.

With red and puffy eyes Martha looked up at Jack. “I’m tired Jack.”

“I know,” Jack whispered.

“I wish that I could just go to sleep and wake up somewhere else, somewhere this wasn’t happening to us and we were happy, you, me and bubba,” Martha said, her voice weary.

Leaning against the wall Jack closed his eyes. “I want that too but we have to make-”

“Don’t tell me we have to make a choice,” Martha warned.

Jack watched her, captivated by every little thing about her. “I love you Martha, without you there is nothing for me and I know you love this baby but together we can … we can make this difficult decision, then we can grieve and then we can fight.”

“I can feel it moving Jack, not much yet, just a little flutter but I can feel it growing inside me … it’s our baby Jack, doesn’t that mean anything to you?” Martha asked.

“Of course it does,” Jack protested. “But I can’t lose you and if that means losing our baby then that’s a choice I’m willing to make. We need to hit this with everything we’ve got Martha and right now time is the one thing we don’t have. I am prepared to do whatever it takes to keep you alive …”

Taking hold of his hand Martha rested it on her stomach. “That’s our little girl or our little boy in there.”

“I know,” Jack whispered cupping her face in his hands.

“It’s our child Jack,” Martha cried.

Leaning his forehead against hers Jack closed his eyes. “And you’re my wife. My best friend. There’s so many people out there that need you in their lives Martha.”

“I’m tired Jack,” Martha whispered, repeating her earlier sentiment.

“We can do this Martha,” Jack vowed.

Taking a deep breath Martha finally voiced her greatest fear. “What if … if I have the abortion and I still don’t beat the cancer anyway then 2 lives would have been lost, at least if I have the baby then at least we can fight and save 1 life.”

“Do you remember what you said when we got married in what seems like another lifetime?” Jack asked.

Martha wiped at her eyes. “It was another lifetime ago.”

Jack wiped a tear from her eye. “Maybe so, but do you remember what you said?”

“That you never know what the future holds,” Martha breathed.

“And it’s true, we don’t, but this much I do know; I love you Martha and I would never be able to live with myself if I didn’t do everything in my power to help you fight this thing and if that means giving up my child then …”

The room fell silent for a minute as they both contemplated the future and the roads that lie ahead of them. Knowing that no matter which one they took neither of them would have a happy ending.

“Jack?” Martha asked, her voice tentative, scared.

Jack looked down at her. “Yeah?”

“I’m scared, really scared but I want to have the biopsy and if that comes back with the odds against me then we’ll talk again, reconsider our options,” Martha explained.

Knowing that at the moment it was the best-case-scenario he was going to get Jack nodded. “One step at a time?”

“One step at a time,” Martha echoed.

“Do you think maybe we should get up off the floor?” Jack asked, a small smile pulling at the corners of his mouth.

Nodding Martha let Jack help her too her feet. “We should probably let everyone know what we’ve decided.”

“If you’re sure you’re ready?” Jack questioned.

Biting her bottom lip Martha took hold of his hand. “I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.”

“And I’m here, every step of the way,” Jack vowed.

Taking a deep breath Martha stepped out into the hallway where Tony and Rachel sat sipping silently at their coffees.

“I’m sorry about what happened in there,” Martha apologised.

“Don’t you dare apologise,” Rachel told her. “You’ve got nothing to be sorry for alright, nothing at all.”

Martha nodded. “Jack and I we’ve come to a decision.”

“Good, that’s good,” Rachel smiled sadly, not really sure what else to say.

“I’ve decided that I will have the biopsy and then once we know exactly what we’ll dealing with then we’ll make the difficult decision, we don’t want to rush this we’ve decided to take it one step at a time,” Martha explained.

Rachel nodded. “That sounds very sensible.”

“When can we have the biopsy?” Martha asked.

“I was speaking to Dr. Wilson a moment ago and she said we can get it done straight away if that was what you decided,” Rachel explained.

Martha shrugged her shoulders. “I guess there’s no time like the present.”

“I’ll get Dr. Wilson,” Rachel said.

“How long will the results take?” Jack asked.

Rachel raised her eyebrows. “About 24 hours.”

The biopsy was over and done with in less than an hour, as they left the hospital Jack held Martha close to him as if he was scared to let her go. Sitting down in the front seat of the car Martha looked out across the car park.

“I really believed that I could get through this, I thought that after the operation I would have time. I thought that I could wait until the baby was born, have the chemo and then we could get on with our lives,” Martha explained.

“You can still beat this,” Jack told her.

Looking down at her growing bump Martha rested her hand on her stomach. “Maybe so but at what cost?”

Wow, this is just such sentimental, emotional writing (in a good way!) I could totally imagine these as scenes on Home & Away...

I hope everything turns out OK, though...

I was sniffling when Martha was talking about feeling her baby grow inside her. :(

omg that was so beautifully written and I loved every minute of it.

Why cant they do this on home and away, instead of Martha push Jack away every time she gets scared or upset or nervous............ <_<

maybe you should become the writer lol :D
