Chapter 17.

[flashBACK]

"Wow!" Mattie, Cassie and Nicole breathed from around her. They were stood in Belle's bedroom on the day of her wedding.

"You look…" Cassie started.

"Awful!" Nicole stated, "I mean it Belle, I think you should take it off…"

Belle laughed, having gotten use to Nicole's personality whereas Cassie scowled, having only met the girl on a couple of occasions. "Thanks, Nic, I'll take that as an insult out of jealousy and hence a compliment."

"Good," Nicole answered, "…because that was how it was intended… …nothing but the best for my Aden."

"Excuse me?" Belle exclaimed, "Your Aden? I thought the woman was meant to be given away at her wedding?"

"It's the twenty first century Belle, why can't men be given away too?" Nicole shrugged, taking hold of the bottom of Belle's dress and running the silky material through her thumb and index finger as she admired it.

"Good point," Belle answered as she turned to look at herself in the mirror again, the feminist woman in her realising how true that statement was, even if intended as a joke.

"Seriously, Belle, he's gonna be in awe," Mattie said, staring up at her best friend in wonder.

"Yeah, you look amazing!" Cassie grinned.

"Thanks," Belle said and took a deep breath, "I can't believe I'm getting married today." She looked at her three friends as they started to become four, then five, then six. She pinched the bridge of her nose and shook her head to try and get her vision back in focus as her surroundings began to spin.

"Belle," Mattie said worriedly, "Are you alright?"

"Yeah," Belle lied, "Can you get me a glass of water?"

"Sure," Mattie left the room to do as Belle asked.

"Are you okay Belle?" Nicole asked with genuine concern.

Belle smiled, feeling a bit better, "Just a bit of a headache, just the stress of the wedding and I'm probably dehydrated."

Nicole nodded and gave her an understanding smile, "A hangover from last night, huh?"

"Very funny," Belle said, putting her hands on her hips. "I did not get drunk last night."

"Yeah, surprisingly, considering the amount you drank," Cassie laughed.

Belle shrugged awkwardly, "So I can handle my drink, sue me?" she lied, having not actually drunk any alcohol the previous night, but had done her very best to hide it.

"Here you go," Mattie came back in to the room and handed the bride to be, a glass of water.

"It's time to go, girlie," Irene looked in on the girls, smilingly. "Let me take a picture first though."

"Irene," Belle whined.

"You have to let me do this," Irene said determinedly.

"…and me," someone else chimed in.

"Mum!" Belle rolled her eyes and put her hands on her hips in frustration.

"You can't do that in our photos Belle," Amanda said. "Get together properly."

Belle shook her head but did as her mother asked as she got together with her three friends.

"Are you ready for this mate? It's not too late to back out?" Roman asked jokingly.

Aden sighed worriedly and stopped doing up his tie, "You know what, I don't think I am ready for this," he looked at Roman whose jaw dropped.

"Aden…" he said but then looked at him with evil eyes as Aden had a grin plastered on his face and was shaking his head.

"As if I would have second thoughts," he said, going back to doing up his tie and looking in the mirror. "I'm marrying the woman of my dreams, what could be better?" although he spoke confidently, he seemed to be having trouble doing up his tie.

Roman saw his hands shaking, "Want a hand there, mate?"

"No," Aden answered defiantly but realised he was never going to get it. "Fine," he turned to face Roman who undid what Aden had already done in order to start again.

"I'm really proud of you, Aden," Roman told him.

"Oh please, don't go all soppy, I've already had Morag crying all over me this morning," Aden laughed.

"Well, no matter how much she seems hardcore, she's still a woman," Roman answered him.

"Hardcore?" Aden raised his eyebrow.

"I couldn't think of another word," Roman shrugged, "…but you know what I mean," he added; laughing at the word as he finished tying Aden's tie. "Anyway, I believe I was telling you how proud I was of you, and how proud I am to be your best man. I was a little surprised you didn't ask Nicole."

"I did," Aden told him. "She said that she wasn't not wearing a dress and she would look stupid stood next to me if she was in a dress."

"What?" Roman looked at him; utterly perplexed.

"I didn't understand it either," Aden told him.

"So wait, I was your second choice?"

"No," Aden swallowed nervously, "What I mean, is, well I was going to ask both of you, cos you've been so great to me, you're my family…"

Roman laughed, "Don't worry about it, Aden, I understand. We are your family."

Aden smiled at his last comment and breathed a sigh of relief, "Okay, thanks."

"So you ready to go?" Roman asked him.

"Yeah," Aden answered him confidently. "I've been ready a long time."

Aden waited impatiently on the beach, where they had made a make shift aisle and archway where he was going to be marrying the woman of his dreams. Belle had wanted to get married in a church, and for some reason unbeknownst to him, so did he, but they had both felt it wouldn't have been appropriate considering everything.

He saw the car pull up and out step, Cassie, Mattie and Nicole in gorgeous aqua marine dresses. He felt his heart beat faster in anticipation and the smile that spread across his face could be seen by all the guests, surprising considering it was dusk and the sun was setting. The wedding was relatively small but they had tried to invite everyone who played a major part in their lives, which was pretty much everyone in the bay.

The next second and a gorgeous woman stepped out of the car, looking down to carefully hold her dress up so as not to step on it. She was wearing a thin strapped white dress, which clung to her upper body and flowed, only slightly, from her waist. It was patterned slightly and showed a respectable amount of cleavage for a wedding day yet showed off just how amazing her body was. Her hair was down, as she knew this was how Aden liked it, having grown it to just below shoulder length over the last few years. It came down in loose waves, framing her facial features where she wore a little make up, aqua marine eye shadow to go with the colour of the bridesmaid's dresses but other than that, the usual make up she would wear with a little extra eye-liner and mascara. Her shoes were silver but simple criss-crossing straps across the top of her feet. She looked up to take Irene's arm who she had asked to give her away and caught sight of Aden's smile causing a huge smile to appear on her face too, as she tightened her clutch on the bouquet.

She heard the song begin to play as she began the walk down the aisle, the song that nearly almost mad her cry because it was so true to what she and Aden felt for each other.

Love song (Copyright 1999 Nanum Music, BMI Written by Rogeniv "Raw J" Mamauag and Ken Parmalee.

You and I began as a simple melody

Through joy and pain we've grown into an endless symphony

And now the time has come for me to take you hand and say

With this ring I thee wed, with this ring I thee wed

With my heart and soul, I give you all my love and my whole life

On this special day we'll both be known as husband and as wife

And who knows what lies in store for us

But I know this much is true

This love song began when I met you

As you walked down that aisle

I reminisced through all the years

How you showered me with love, took away all my fears

And I remember when I looked in your eyes

And I knew you were the one

Now because of you, this love song has begun

Belle had been standing in front of Aden for about five minutes and had only just managed to say what she had been asked to say because she couldn't stop staring in to Aden's eyes. He was having the same problem but neither of them cared. They had chosen to write their own vows and Aden went first.

"Belle," he began, smiling at her and holding her hands in his. "When I met you, you hated me," she laughed as did the rest of their guests, "…but only because I deserved it. I started to become a better person but when you accepted me and we first became a couple, you made me complete. I know that you are what I had been missing. Although sometimes I've treated you badly in the past, you've understood and you've helped me and I know that I would never treat you badly ever again. I love you so much that marriage is the only way to show you but I don't think even that is enough. I never thought I would have this with anyone, let a lone the most perfect woman in the universe." Belle sniffled and let a tear escape her. "When I say forever to you today, I truly mean it, throughout life, after life, and after death, whatever that may be. I know we'll be happy," he sniffled, trying to hold back his own tears. "You were the first person I ever let see the 'real me' and you'll be the last," he smiled. "I love you, Belle Taylor, soon to be Jefferies," he said, speaking the words as though it were actually her name.

"Aden," she started to answer. "I've always thought that you think I mean more to you than you do to me," he bowed his head, knowing that some part of him had always felt that. "I want you to know that that would be wrong. Because I have no idea how anyone could mean more to someone than you mean to me. You are truly the person I am meant to be with. I barely believed in soul mates before we began but it didn't take long for me to see that you are mine. Once you let me in, I saw the man that you could be, and the man that you have succeeded in being today, and that is because that is the 'real ' you," she took a deep breath, "Aden…" she stopped as she started to feel dizzy again, "Aden…" she tried again, unable to look at him as she raised a hand to her temple.

"Belle, are you okay?" he asked worriedly.

"Aden…" she tried once more before falling to her knees in agony and placing a hand on her stomach, "Argh!" she cried and looked up at Aden who was only slightly taller than her now as he had knelt down to be beside her and looked terrified, "Something's wrong," she told him in a quieter voice, as he saw her water glazed eyes staring at her before collapsing in to his arms.

"Someone call an ambulance!" he yelled, holding her close to him, "You're going to be alright Belle. You're going to be alright," he told her, trying to convince himself as much as anyone.

"Aden?" Rachel said quietly, shaking him gently by the shoulder to wake him up.

He jolted awake suddenly, "Belle?"

"She's okay, Aden," Rachel said calmingly. "She's out of surgery and it went well."

Aden breathed a sigh of relief, "The baby?" he asked tentatively.

"I'm sorry Aden, but as I said before the surgery, there was no way the baby could have survived an ectopic pregnancy," she told him sadly.

"I know," he nodded. "I just needed you to tell me," he added sadly. "Can I see her?"

"Yes, but she's still sleepy from the anaesthetic," Rachel told him. "Do you want me to wake Irene and Amanda?"

"Yeah, please," he said, looking at the women asleep in the chairs next to him. "Whilst I go and see Belle?"

Rachel nodded, 'Sure."

He walked carefully in to Belle's room, and saw that she was awake, be it drowsily, "Hey," he breathed in greeting and she reached out for his hand which he gave to her in less than a second. "How are you doing?"

"I lost it, Aden. I lost our baby," she said, choking slightly on the tears she had been crying in his absence.

Aden looked shocked, "No you didn't," he told her firmly. "There was nothing anyone could have done."

"…but all I had to do was give it a home for nine months, and I couldn't even do that," Belle sniffed.

"Don't you dare blame yourself, Belle," Aden told her. "This was not your fault."

She turned away from him but squeezed his hand to let him know she didn't want him to leave, "Jamie," she said unexpectedly.

"What?"

"I was thinking we could have called it 'Jamie'," she continued, looking at him again. "It's a unisex name."

"I like that," Aden agreed. "We still could," he added in suggestion.

"What would be the point, Aden? They're gone, whoever they're were going to be," she sighed.

"…but they still have a right to a name," he pushed gently. "It might help. Remember what Martha and Roman did a few years ago?"

She nodded gently.

"So we can have a memorial when you get out of hospital, where we can say goodbye to Jamie properly," Aden confirmed.

Belle smiled at him using the name as though their baby had been alive which it had, she realised; if not for long.

There was a knock at the door, "Can I come in?" Irene asked and Belle nodded gently.

"How are you, girlie?" her surrogate mother asked.

"I'm okay," Belle told her with a weak smile.

"I'm so sorry about the baby love. I can't believe I never even knew you were pregnant."

"We didn't want to tell anyone until she was a bit further along, the doctors advised us that and we haven't known very long ourselves," Aden explained.

"I understand love," Irene said, placing a hand on his shoulder reassuringly. "I just wish you didn't have to go through this. At least you have each other."

"Yeah," Aden whispered, kissing Belle's hand as he watched a single tear roll down her cheek.

A few weeks later, Belle was out of hospital and she and Aden were changing the name of the Drop In centre. The sign above it now read:

SUMMER BAY DROP IN CENTRE

In memory of Jamie Taylor-Jefferies

*

"If Jamie had never existed," Belle stated as she and Aden lied in the hotel room bed together, "I don't think either of us would have thought we could have handled taking on Tess. I had never thought of being a mother until Jamie but when I lost that, I realised how much I wanted it. And now we have a beautiful daughter."

Aden smiled gently, "Yeah, I guess everything that's meant to happen, happens for a reason."
