Opening Credits / Opening Theme Discussion

I agree its better to have what we currently have than silly poor attempts of the last few years, but I certainly hope they rethink and bring back a proper theme full time (not just Mondays - what would be the point - again it would be half hearted).

I dont think the show desperately needs a 60 second opening sequence every day. A 50/60 second version once per week (as suggested every Monday to kick start the week) and then a shorter bumper the rest of the week I'd settle for and it is surely a fair compromise?

I totally agree! Thinking about the thing of having a full title sequence once a week, you make a good point - I was looking at it the way someone said of having it on Monday but then non through the week but they could do a full one on Monday then a shorter one (rather than none) through the week as you say. I just think it sad that they seem to not want to give the show any real brand identity anymore.

The only problem IO could see wuth having two lots of credits like that is the temptation to end up like we did back in the days of the dreaded picture frames with some random episodes having a theme then others having none. Theyd start off with good intentions but we know what theyre like lol

Anyway...

i really like the revamp of the presentation this year, new title cards before the recap and preview and the closing credits are the best in years i think.

it's funny that for so long they pumped so much money into very effects-heavy credits which the majority of people disliked, and they spend a small amount on a very tasteful, simple set of closing credits that they never planned to ever show in their home market and people [me] love them  .

They certainly are :) Much more what the show IS rather than all the gimmicks its had foisted on it over the last few years (I dont know where the obsession with boxes and picture frames came from or why they persisted so long with it lol). You're right it is bizarre that in Australia they dont even see the lovley closing credits they created for international broadcast - I think australian viewers would love them as much as us :D

i've been watching some old episodes of Neighbours on Youtube, and it looks as though up until the end of the 2002 season they ended every episode with a freeze-frame as well. perhaps the Beeb didn't include it for UK broadcast though as i have no recollection of it being that way over here.

but anyway, as i continue to watch the early years of Home and Away, i still think the freeze-frame ending is really effective. i wish they would bring it back.

you're correct, the BBC episodes were slightly edited to remove the Australian ad breaks (which also featured freeze frames and the neighbours logo) and the edited international/BBC credits. Since it moved to Five we get pretty much the australian version (minus the australian ad break boards) and only one ad break. We also dont get teh extended version of the closing theme used on Fridays in Australia (is it still like this? I know it was before).

*It appears we now do get the extended Friday credits on Neighbours, commencing Royal Wedding Friday! This may be a one off or a new development*

I also always liked the freeze frame effect on H&A, i always felt it added a dramatic touch to much the same effect as the EastEnders Drum beats do, giving a few seconds to take the ending in!

I think the Freeze-Frame looks a bit tacky now. The 2000-2003 approach worked the best, with the cliffhanger music continuing under the credits.

I would rather have 30 seconds every day, as we had from 2004-2006. The show just hasn't been right since the barn explosion of 2006, and the credits issue is a major reason for that.

i've noticed that the unique bumper before the recap with 'Home and Away' floating in the bay has been abandoned and replaced with the bumper from before the end of episode preview.

can anyone think of a reason why they have done this other than laziness?!

apologies for being picky and filling up the thread with massive pictures.

What does everyone think of the new recap music ?

Personally I think it's great and I'm glad that awful previously on Home and Away is gone:)

Could this be a hint that new credits are on the way?

I think the new recap music is awful! It sounds so stupid and childish but I am glad the previously on Home and Away is gone too! If they are planning on having new opening credits I hope they don't use this new music.

I'm not exactly sure why they've changed the recap music now, and I wouldn't say it was any improvement as the 2011 version was fine.

I think it's strange that they've chosen to abandon the classic theme tune underscore for it - which has been in place as recap music since 2000 - as it is the final link to the iconic opening song. Without the classic underscore the new recap tune is quite dull IMO, with a simplistic melody, cluttered with several other instruments. The transitions between the different versions are also ill-defined. To me, scrapping the original underscore is a sign that opening credits definitely aren't returning any time soon. With a new producer on board it's possible, but I think Network 7 plays a big part in why there are no credits.

I think they

with a clearly defined but subtle use of the theme tune underscore, and nice use of strings. In my opinion this is the best, highest quality version they ever produced and it's a shame they only used it for one year.

I think with the exception of the 'strings' version mentioned above, the bars of the theme song have never worked effectively as a recap tune imo. It's neither dramatic, sad or 'funny', so it fails to compliment anything that is shown.

They should just use an underscore that suits whatever is going on, the idea of even having daily recap music just seems like such a dated thing.

The new one reminds me of the Neighbours recap tune from the early 00's (minus the sax). Again, it doesn't work. Great for when they recap of a fun filled turn of events, but yeah, that's not going to happen. That said, I do prefer the little introduction over the logo, to what they had before.

As for credits? Looooong gone.
