I discovered the Pokemon anime in 1999, and got Pokemon Gold for my Gameboy for Christmas 2000. I haven't seen any episode made after I've basically grown out of it, or as much as I ever will, but I've been rewatching it on youtube from the start recently, and it's not bad. I'd thought about buying a cheap DVD of the first series, but it only had the dub, instead of the Japanese original.

This is a really good website devoted to comparing Pokemon in the original Japanese and the Americanised dub. The page for the episode Primeape goes Bananas links to an amusing video of the characters going overboard trying to convince us they're eating donuts rather than onigiri (rice balls). Actually, it wasn't that unconvincing, if you've never seen onigiri before, but it does raise the question of why the dubbers can't call it what it is.

There's also a couple of amusing edits where they've erased Japnese writing but ignored the other 99% of the Japanese culture in the shot.

Thanks to this website, I'm now getting into the habit of thinking of the characters by their Japanese names - Satoshi, Kasumi, Takeshi, Musashi, Kojiro and Nyasu.

WHAT?! Maddie died? Oh my god... I'm almost speechless. I chatted to her on a few occasions and she was such a great person and so dedicated to playing Meowth. Such a tragic loss :(

I can't believe I didn't know that. Thanks for telling me.

On a lighter note, here's one of my fave Team Rocket moments: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGIfx7x-Ttk
