Chris is a macho character, kind of why I like him and I never expected him to be gay so when he came out, was a massive shock to me  but yes Miranda as I said as well, I think personally Casey is gay. Dex is quirky and different (in a good way) & I love the character but just because he is different doesnt mean he is gay if that makes sense to anyone.

That's what I thought about Chris. I wish I'd watched Neighbours now if they are handling 'modern' storylines like people being gay so well.

Yes about the other bit too. I think Dex seems to be gay BUT as you say just because he's different doesn't mean he's gay. Good Point :D

Re: Casey, I haven't a clue about him, he's hard to work out. I've rather lost interest in him cos he's just turned into 'Ruby's boyfriend' now, he doesn't have anything else happening. Anyway, I suppose I should write about him on his own thread!

Also the quirkiness with Dex always seems to be about him trying to be normal maybe that is a hint that he isnt straight.. but I personally dont want Dex to be gay but as I said before I think the show is pushing Dex on that path.

Like I said, I've been opposed to the idea of Dexter being gay before for the very reasons Zetti said, that it suggests that anyone who turns out to be gay has to have been a bit of an oddball anyway. But if it comes down to a choice between Dexter being with April and Dexter being gay, I'd rather gay.I'd rather he was single or with a different girl but that doesn't look like an option.I get more of a gay vibe from Casey as well, especially since it now seems he hadn't had anything to do with girls before Ruby came along...

Regarding Chris on Neighbours, despite him being good at sports and a typical soap opera teen physically, I wouldn't describe him as macho by any stretch of the imagination. When he first appeared as a background character he was a pretty two-dimensional geek who had bad hair and wore glasses, then when he became more central they gave him a makeover but still had him very much as the sensitive one.In fact I actually posted some comments on a Neighbours forum about how it was a shame they'd had him turn out to be gay rather than one of the more typical teens. But fair play to them for at least being that brave, especially since they apparently are going to have him in a relationship rather than just being the token gay who never dates anyone.

(In fact...sudden deja vu.Chris hooked up with Summer 5 minutes after she broke up with Harry, his supposed friend, a relationship I was in favour of, leaving me resenting Chris until he came out. Could someone on the HA writing staff have been taking notes..?)

Maybe it is just me then, but I think he is the macho type but then obviously since you are male, you probably have a better idea than me about it  but I do think that he has a macho side to him as well as sensitivity.

Ah good point about Casey, Sherlock Ranger. Heath and Brax seemed very surprised/ relieved/ proud when he hooked up with Ruby, didn't they? Hm...

I suppose Chris surely must be more macho than Dex though, he isn't macho at all (in a good way). When Chris's BF/ Bob Morley turns up, I wonder what sort of character he will be on the macho continuum? How many threads can I get Bob Morley into?

Boyfriend LOL! Haha Jen, you read between the lines of the subtext the writers put in

So, Perry, who DO you think is gay in HAA at the moment, or who in your opinion would be the best one to be a convincing gay character? :)

Heath

absolulutely not!

Dexter is, hands down! What is wrong with having a so called stereotyped character?? As the matter of fact to have a macho gay character is probably making the problem even worse... Because is it wrong to be different?? H&A always gives the impression of that, only the model looking girls/boys are doing it well... All the boys with a terrible background is always going to "hell" (never going to change...). And the last gay/lesbian storyline on the show went terribly wrong! It actually was excused by a rape-storyline, Charlie was confused of her sexuality because of her being raped years ago - that was absoulutely an insult to every lesbian/gay around the world!! It was just a pr. stunt - having to good looking girls, and especially charlie who are a very speculative character (because the writers do take too much advantage of Esthers good looks..)- To have a typical macho character like this Heath would be excactly the same. It would only attract people because of the sensation of having to good looking people of same sex making out... Just like a lot of the fanfictions on this site. It will not be about accepting people for who they are!

To use Dexter in a gay storyline would have been great if it had been done right. A lot of young people around the world are struggling with their sexuality! And as I said being different is not wrong! The characters of H&A are far too stereotyped these days, characters like Annie, Jai, Melody are not the writers first priority. Why is it wrong to have characters being like real people on the show. And don't come with that excuse that it is only a soap!! Eastenders for instance is only a soap too, and they are doing all kind of characters more believable. It makes the show feels like it is about people and people can relate to it!! H&A has become a trash soap just like the american Sunset Beach was... Unfortunately.

Making Dexter gay, would have open for a lot of different storylines... His father for instance - how would he have reacted? didn't he freak out when Dex tried Marilyns clothes?? And Colleen?? Or the other characters, Casey for instance?? I can imagine that a type like him, would freak out, especially with his upbringing - the lack of input and normal discussions on different issues. And then we have the characters who absoulutely would have supported him, like Roo, Irene, Leah, Ruby etc... it would actually have been a great ground for a lot of different storylines coming out of this. We are all people, and we are all precious no matter who we are, no matter what kind of colour or sexuality we have.

But then again, I have don't think H&A would have done it right. I have no faith in that.

I think people are pushing for a Macho gay character because they want to break the sterotype and show that the people who are gay are "normal" and like everyone else but my reason for not wanting Dexter to be gay has nothing to do with him being stereotypically abnormal. I just like him and April. But I agree giving dex 'the gay' might actually take away what makes Dex such an amazing character that he doesn't have a reason to be him - he just is.

I don't think that is the real reason! Most of you want a model-like gay character, because you would like two good looking people making out! Just look back at the fan fics and fantasies about Geoff and Aden. There were no reason to think they were gay... They did not struggle with their sexuallity or did not hint liking the same sex. It was just about imagination of two very good looking boys making out!! And Dexter, isn't he normal?? From what I have seen of him, he really is... as the matter of fact the most normal male teen for a very long time!! He is just not a model, he is normal looking, and he has a personality! To say that you don't want Dex to be gay because you don't want a stereotype being gay is actually against yourself.

If they had done the lesbian storyline with other than Esther/Charlie, a more believable character I don't think it would have create that much critisism and noise. Because if it had been done differently, that the storyline would have been about being different and accepting who you are, the critics in Australia would have had more difficulties with arguing about the subject... Because then it would have been more about critisize a certain group of people, and the show could have argued that the critics are going to make the world worse for those kids who are struggling with their sexuality and identity. But when it was done like it was done, the show couldn't excactly say it was just about being different... It was very unbelieavable that Charlie was suddenly bifil, or lesbian... she hadn't been unsecure before. And remember how they ended the storyline... It would have been the same with Heath or one of the other Braxtons.... It must be done with a belieavable character, not with some hunk like Heath who have had a lot of same sex storylines before, but someone who has messed around a bit without finding himself/herself the right one. And I would like it to be a young character... Not a character over 20, because they would normally have found themselves.

Well yeah im gay so I'd rather the two boys to be good looking but to I find Charles very attractive even more so then Lincoln lewis yet I was one of the more vocal Gaden fans but I'm not going to lie I do want good looking guys kissing. What's wrong with that? But as a gay person and a soap fan I would really like a positive role model for gay teens who are continually being pressured into staying in the closet because our society and government won't accept homosexuality. I don't care if you accuse me of being shallow when I say I'd prefer two young gay guys kissing then Keith and John Palmer making out because I will and it's not just because they are two 'old'guy's. Remember the outcry when Amanda was kissing Graham? The whole show is full of gorgeous people, Dexter included and I don't want the homosexual character to be in any way beneath the other character, looks included.
