Thank you everyone for the reviews. And here is the much awaited eleventh chapter.. drum roll please Chapter Eleven: Solving the Amnesia Belle sat on the couch, sobs already racking her whole body. Everything had come back to her: weddings, babies, death, divorce, another wedding... everything except for the one memory that would solve it all. Geoff wrapped his arms around her and began talking “You remember almost everything”, he whispered, tears already welling up in his eyes “I don’t understand,” she sobbed, all the memories taking their toll on her. “I saw Aden a few days ago and we kissed. I told him I loved him. How can you and I be married?” “Belle, that was 2011”, Geoff told her, “we were friends at the time, and I told you that you had to let Aden know how you felt, that you still loved him because life is too short to live a lie” “But I remember talking to him about my memory loss”, Belle insisted, but Geoff slowly shook his head “That’s your brain playing tricks on you. What you said to Aden was that you wanted to forget everything that happened. Your amnesia was telling you what your subconscious longed to hear” “It was just another memory”, she sobbed, the realization finally hitting her “You and Aden got married in 2009, and had a baby, but she died, and you and Aden couldn’t cope. You and Aden got divorced, but still loved each other. Everyone knew that you two would get back together, and when we became friends, I convinced you to talk to Aden” “That was 2011”, Belle remembered, to which Geoff nodded his head. “Aden died the next day”, he whispered, watching as the pain hit her all over again. “And we got married and adopted our own baby”, Belle shared with him. “And when I woke up in the hospital...” she trailed off, leaving Geoff to fill in the blanks “You were living in 2009 and you’d forgotten everything. You forgot having your daughter, losing her and divorcing Aden. You forgot reuniting with Aden, and then having him die. You forgot marrying me and adopting Luke”, Geoff told her, filling in the details of the last six years “The number plate?” Belle asked, unsure why it was still on the car “You love that car almost as much as you love Aden. It felt wrong to take it away” “That’s why I’m Mrs. Jeffries, instead of Mrs. Campbell”, Belle stated, not needing an answer. She just knew. “We don’t love each other”, she whispered “I love you but you only love me like a brother. You needed someone to tie you down to the earth and that was me”, Geoff told her, tears now flowing freely down his cheeks “How did he die?” she choked out, not wanting to know but needing to at the same time “It was a car accident Belle, quick and painless. He died happy because he knew you still loved him” When Belle’s sobs had quietened down, Geoff left her to come to terms with everything. I’ve lost the only man I’ve ever loved, she thought to herself. Why couldn’t I have stayed living in the past? 2015 was terrifying and she didn’t know how to cope. A summary of the last six years flashed through her head. 2009: I married the love of my life 2010: Had a beautiful baby daughter, who died in a hurricane 2011: Divorced Aden, became best friends with Geoff, told Aden that I loved him, started afresh, then lost Aden in a car accident 2012: Dated Geoff as a stand-in, for the man that I loved more than anything else 2013: Married Geoff, even though I didn’t love him the same way as he loved me 2014: Adopted a baby boy 2015: Forgot everything, only to remember all the pain “You are the best thing that ever happened to me,” Aden’s voice repeated over and over in her head. How had she gone from that, to someone who settles with someone she doesn’t truly love? And then it all became clear. Aden was the key to love, to life, and without him, nothing else mattered Six years of Belle’s life had disappeared because of an accident, and forgetting them may have been the most important thing she had ever done. It had made her remember everything. So Belle tucked away the memories of her one true love, and trudged up the stairs to be a good wife to a man she didn’t love, and the doting mother to a child who would always come second in her heart. One good thing that came out of Belle Jeffries having amnesia was that she realised that she was incredibly lucky. Most people never met their soul mate, and although she didn’t get long with him, she was still thankful. And that was worth the pain that she felt for settling for second best, and losing her heart to the man that haunted her from beyond the grave. And that is the end of Amnesia.
