1988 Episode Discussion

I'm enjoying these early episodes, though I do have to admit, that as the episodes go on, Tom and Pippa do seem to be annoying me more and more. I think it was a really good thing for the show when Pippa was recast to Debra Lawrence, as she'smuch more convincing in the portrayal of Pippa. Even though they're both annoying me, I do think that Pippa's the weak link in the couple; it just seems like she talks to Tom as if he's a child and it seems so formal all the time, and they don't have any chemistry with each other.

I suppose you have to bear in mind that the show's only just started but I'm shocked by how much of an improvement Michael and Pippa are over Tom and OriginalPippa.

However, I'm loving all of the other characters at the moment, particularly Martin. I think he's a great quirky character and really brings his character to life. To me he's probably the most convincing actor of the bunch of them, but I do really love Frank and Bobby. Lyn seems to have vanished into thin air but the interaction between Bobby, Carly, Frank, Alf, Ailsa, Roo and Fisher is great.

I do think Roo cracked on to Frank rather early. Bloomin' 'eck did that girl seem desperate!!!

I've heard somewhere, I think it was actually a Baycast last year, that Bevan said the show nearly axed after 4 or 5 weeks and they knew why - they had been playing it far too safe, trying to avoid the melodrama of Sons and Daughters and I think it is noticable here, there is occasionally a lack of, one doesn't want to say action becaue that springs to mind car chases and such like. This episode just seemed to roll along all episode, it all seems to be nothing-ness between the two cliffhangers - basically the car crash. The rest is basically almost like watching people on Big Brother making small talk or something.

I've also noticed a distinct lack of music, I know the diner isnt around yet for them to drag a song over a scene, but there isnt a lot of underscore either, which can slow the pace of things down too. I'm glad they avoided the melodrama of Sons and Daughters because I think that show could be way OTT it just got confusing for the casual viewer.

At the moment things are still feeling very fresh and we're still learning about character traits and back story. I really like the feeling Floss and Nev give out, them living a quite sea side life in a gypsy cart surrounded by bushland. Out of all the Fletcher kids we've seen and heard the least of Lyn. I don't have much of a memory about anything Lyn does in the show, even after seeing the reruns last time; I'm looking forward to seeing how the character panned out.

Oh yeah, yesterdays cliffhanger when Bobby says to Carly 'And I feel pretty damn guilty about it too!' - this has been dubbed somehow, I'm just wondering what she really says...maybe its 'I feel pretty bloody guilty about it too' - but that wouldn't makes sense as they say bloody all the time during the Early Years. I just had another look and she may have said 'I feel pretty ***** (oh the word has been blocked out...female dog) guilty'?! Anyone else have any idea?

Speaking of the cliffhangers, I really don't like how the show continues after the end credits because the cliffhanger comes to a sort of resolve within that last few seconds, I don't see the point in it.

Don't know if Red Ranger's doing this, but Alf episode count is 4.

Fisher and Carly have 5, Pippa, Ailsa and Bobby have 4. Of the credited characters, Lynn brings up the rear with 2.

There's what turns out to be a continuity error in Episode 7 and I'mnot talking about things that we know now they didn't know, I'm talking about things we'd know they'd know.

Episode 5 was just as enjoyable as the rest of the first week. I'm really glad that Carly owned up to letting the hand-brake go, I wish we had more Martin scenes though cos he's hilarious and hot too ;)

I can't say I'm finding this story with Alf and Ailsa all that flash. It's hard to believe, because they were such a brilliant couple in the last few years they were on-screen together, but I don't think that they have that much chemistry here at the moment. It's amazing to see how much it builds up over time and I can't wait to see it.

Roo is a right little scheming minx, you can see why Martha's turned out the way she has! Is anyone else finding it strange that Floss just seems to be roaming around the Fletcher house, I don't really understand what her and Neville were doing there today?! Although I was pleased to see them, because they are really entertaining characters. I think it's a shame Floss is giving up her tarot reading, I hope she doesn't completely!

I was actually relieved to have a break from Tom and Pippa tonight, they've been doing my head in.

My favourite scene of Episode 5 has to go to the Carly Confession scene. I thought the interaction and drama between her and Donald was very well-acted, particularly on Donald's part, I really thought it was a great scene. I look forward to Episode 6 now! :)
