Chapter 25 - Love

It was now morning, and Angelo stretched in the chair as he began to wake up. As he opened his eyes, and took in the sight of his baby boy lying in the cot next to him, it all came flooding back. Angelo jumped up from his chair and leant over the cot and smiled at his son.

"Hey buddy, you look better today. All those nasty wires have gone!" Angelo cooed over Joseph, and felt relieved that it seemed his precious baby was recovering. It had been a long night. Angelo had finally managed to convince Charlie to go home for the night at around midnight. She hadn't been keen, but eventually even stubborn Charlie had to admit that she felt terrible herself, and would be no good for Joseph in that state. Angelo was just about to ring home and find out how Charlie was, when she rushed into the room.

"How is he Angelo? Is he ok?" Charlie asked in a panic.

"Take a look for yourself" Angelo pointed to the cot. Charlie ran over to where Joseph lay gurgling to himself. She reached in and picked him up, ans sat down on a chair cuddling him.

"Oh, it's so good to see you my little Jo Jo. Mummy has missed you so much and has been so worried about you" Charlie spoke softly to her baby, and planted gentle kisses on his head.

"How are you feeling this morning?" Angelo asked, a little concerned that Charlie still looked a bit pale.

"Not too bad. I haven't been sick since last night, but then I haven't eaten anything yet. I hardly slept at all last night, I should have stayed here"

"Charlie, you needed to go home. Even if you didn't sleep, just the rest would have done you good. You have to stop feeling so guilty, you would do anything for your family, everybody knows that" Angelo pulled Charlie into a hug, and smiled at his son, who looked up at him with big blue eyes.

"I know. Thank-you for staying with him. Jo Jo is a very lucky boy to have a daddy like you"

"And I'll make sure he knows it!" Angelo replied laughing.

"Don't get too big headed or I'll take the compliment back" Charlie warned her husband, before laughing herself.

Soon after Charlie's arrival. Rachel came to see Joseph. She was happy with the progress he was making and Joseph was moved out of HDU onto a ward. Over the next two days, Joseph made a full recovery, and to Charlie's relief, he was discharged after three nights in hospital.

Life slowly returned to normal in the Rosetta household, and Charlie soon found herself at the end of her six month maternity leave. Charlie loved her career, and was looking forward to getting back to work, but the thought of leaving her son behind filled her with dread. For the most part, Charlie and Angelo would be able to do different shifts which would mean that there would always be someone there to look after Joseph, but on the odd occasion, Charlie needed to find a babysitter.

"I hate the thought of leaving him with a stranger" Charlie said to Angelo as they sat in bed one night.

"I know you do baby, but it's only going to be for a few occasions when we are rostered on together. Perhaps Irene or Leah could have him, or even Ruby"

"Maybe, can you talk to them tomorrow? I can't believe it's my first day back tomorrow. I have to admit, I'm pretty nervous" Charlie replied.

"Don't worry, you will be fine. You are the best Sargeant Summer Bay has ever had" Angelo said, trying to calm his wife.

"It will be nice to go back to grown up company. I love Jo Jo to bits, but it's hard talking to a baby all day"

"You have me to talk to!" Angelo replied.

"No comment!" Charlie laughed to herself. Angelo realised she was laughing at him, and started to tickle her.

"STOP IT!! Angelo please! I need a coffee, please go and do something useful!" Charlie continued to laugh as she watched her husband leave the room. It wasn't long before Ruby came bounding in.

"Hey Rubes, I haven't seen you for ages, what have you been up to?" Charlie said. Although her relationship with Ruby was practically back to normal. she couldn't help but feel guilty sometimes about the amount of time she spent with Joseph.

"I've been at Xavier's house. I just wanted to wish you luck for tomorrow and give you this" Ruby handed over a card. Charlie opened it and started to read.

Dear Mum, I hope your first day back at work goes well for you. You have been so brave over the last few months, and I am proud to be your daughter. I am so happy that you and Angelo are together, and I love my little brother so much. I love you mum, Love Ruby.

Charlie finished reading and had tears in her eyes.

"Thank-you so much Rubes, that means so much to me. I know it can't be easy for you, having to share me with Angelo and Jo Jo. But remember , you were my first child, my precious little girl. I love you"

"Love you too mum"

Angelo entered the room and found Charlie and Ruby hugging. He smiled to himself as he sat on the bed. Before he knew it, Ruby had dragged him into the hug as well. Charlie felt so lucky to have her family around her. As she settled down to sleep later that night, with Angelo's arm wrapped around her, she couldn't help smiling.
