Sorry about the wait...to make up for it - a shed load of fluff :D:D

“Alright darl?”

Irene sat down onto the sand next to Aden and placed a hand onto his shoulder.

“Huh?” Aden asked coming to from the trance like state he had slipped into.

“I asked if you were alright.” Irene repeated.

“I……yeah….yeah I’m fine Irene, thanks.”

Irene let out a small sigh as she followed Aden’s gaze to the gathering a few metres along the beach.

“Nice try mister. I know today must be hard for you Aden and……” Irene lifted up a hand when Aden tried to interrupt. “…just let me say this…I know today must be hard for you because it’s killin me let me tell ya. I just wanted to say that I…I couldn’t be prouder of you….”

“Irene…”

“What did I say about interruptions?” Irene scolded before he could get any further. “I look at that gorgeous little girl of your and I know…I know with all my heart Aden that Belle…she’d be proud of you too.”

“That’s all I want Irene.” Aden whispered pain evident in his tone.

Irene sighed again and placed her hand once more onto his shoulder. “Luvvie, you couldn’t do any better for Lola, any fool with half a brain can see that just looking at her.” She pointed briefly to where Lola was playing happily on the sand in the middle of the birthday gathering. “She’s so bright and smart and happy and loved…that’s all Belle would have wanted for her.”

“I’m trying so hard.” Aden replied. “That’s all I want for her too….for her to be happy….and I think she is but….”

“No buts!” Irene insisted.

“Hey, hear me out.” Aden replied “I do know she’s happy and I know that I give her everything I can to make that happen I just worry that she’s missing out you know?”

“Missin out? I’m not following?”

“I…She has you and Nic and Amanda and heaps of other people but….she doesn’t have a mommy Irene.”

“Oh love.”

“I know.” Aden sighed. “It kills me every day that I can’t give her the one thing that I think she needs the most.”

“There’s not much I can say here Aden. It is a crying shame that that beautiful little girl has to grow up without a mommy; it breaks my heart every day. What I do know though is that she has a daddy who loves her and will do anything for her. Today isn’t the day to be talking about this I know but one day you will find someone who…”

“Irene…”

“Alright, like I said today’s not the day but me are you are gonna have this chat boyo ok?”

Aden nodded his head in reply as his gaze drifted back over to the party.

“Let’s get back eh…” Irene encouraged “…I reckon it must be nearly time for cake.”

********

As he walked back towards the party after his talk with Irene Aden couldn’t keep the grin from his face. Nicole had gone to so much effort and it made his heart swell to see his baby girl at the centre of it all, happiness etched into her tiny features.

A large white gazebo had been erected on the beach, the underneath of which had been strewn with pink Balloons and streamers. A number of pink covered tables had been filled with food, courtesy of Roman, a huge pink teddy bear cake taking pride of place in the centre. Most of the people that Aden considered friends were milling about underneath and around the structure, and to his relief they all appeared to be having a nice time.

“Hey there angel.” He murmured as he dropped down onto the sand next to his daughter. “Are you having a good time baby?”

“She’s having a great time aren’t you?” Nicole replied for the little girl.

“Thanks for this Nic.” Aden looked up, a huge smile gracing his face. “It’s…it’s all really great.”

“Anything for my little princess here.” Nicole dropped a kiss onto Lola’s head.

“Yeah, well we really appreciate it don’t we bub?” Aden lifted Lola onto his lap as he spoke, brushing sand from her chubby legs. “Look at you mucky girl, good job we went with these shorts eh!”

Nicole rolled her eyes at his statement. She had tried her hardest to dress Lola in the pretty pink sundress she had bought but Aden was insistent that the little girl needed something practical and comfortable to play in resulting in her current outfit of a pair of soft denim shorts teamed with a pink t-shirt emblazoned with a large number one that was decorated with colourful butterflies and flowers.

Lying next to them on the sand was the birthday present that Geoff had sent. Aden had removed the pink converse baseball boots as soon as they had got the beach so Lola could play. Just looking at them brought a lump to Aden’s throat, so fierce was the reminder of Belle.

Noticing where Aden’s glance had landed and the sorrowful look on his face Nicole quickly brought him back to the present.

“So are we gonna go do the cake?”

“Yeah.” Aden grinned as his attention turned back to his daughter who was leaning from his lap to grab handfuls of sand which she was then dropping onto his legs. “I think Missy here needs cleaning up first though.” He lifted Lola and turned her so she was standing on his legs, the handful of sand she had was this time directed at his chest. “Hey you monkey! What you doin to daddy?”

Lola giggled along with him as he used one hand to steady her and the other to brush the sand from the both of them.

“Come on cheeky! Nic can you go do the candle whilst I clean up madam?”

“I certainly can.” Nicole replied standing up.

“And don’t forget the camera yeah…and the video…maybe Romeo can do that…will you ask him? But tell him to zoom in on Lola not me yeah, ‘cause…”

“Aden, chill out, I’m on it.” Nicole laughed as she wandered over to the table calling to Romeo as she went.

“Chill out! Your auntie Nic is almost as cheeky as you bub. Do you think so huh?” As he chatted to Lola Aden stood up and carried her over to where he had stored her bag, pulling out a packet of wipes and quickly using a couple to clean her up as best as he could. “That’s better. Let’s have a look at you.” He cleared a space on the table in front of them and lowered Lola onto it taking her hands into his and holding them out to her sides as she chuckled. “Lookin good baby!” He couldn’t resist leaning forward to press kisses into her chubby cheek causing her laughter to increase and for her to squirm to try and get out of his grasp. “Monkey! Come on; let’s go see your cake.”

As he lifted Lola back into his arms Aden noticed that Nicole had gathered all of the guests around the table containing the cake. He carried her over and made his way through the small crowd coming to stand in the centre as Nicole began a loud rendition of happy birthday which everybody else soon joined in with. Out of the corner of his eye he caught Nicole snapping away with the camera but most of his attention was focused on Lola and trying not to give into the tears that were threatening. He helped her to blow out the candle and despite knowing that at only one she wouldn’t understand, he whispered to her to make a wish.

*******

After the cake was dished out the guests dispersed once again. Aden and Nicole took Lola down to the waters edge where Tony was paddling with two year old Harry.

“Lola, baby, you aren’t as big as Harry, you can’t rush off!” Aden warned as the little girl attempted to rush away from him. Scooping her into his arms he kissed her on her head before placing her down in front of him, keeping hold of her hands to prevent her going too far.

“Someone’s getting a bit ahead of themselves eh?” Tony laughed with a nod at Lola.

“Oh yeah.” Aden agreed. “She has no fear!”

“Kinda like her mom.” Tony smiled kindly.

“Yeah.” Aden grinned. “Yeah…she’s just like Belle.”

“Lucky for her!” Nicole exclaimed. “Look at the alternative!”

“Hey!” Aden laughed kicking his foot in Nicole’s direction, spraying her with water.

“Hey!” Nicole squealed, splashing back.

“Hey the both of you!” Tony laughed as he caught the brunt if the splash Nicole had meant for Aden. “You might wanna watch the little one too!”

Aden and Nicole both looked down to Lola to find her grinning up at them as water dripped from her hair.

“Awww, sorry sweetie!” Nicole lifted Lola into her arms and used her hand to wipe the drips of water from the little girls face.”

“She doesn’t mind do ya baby?” Aden replied kicking up another splash of water towards the two girls causing Nicole to squeal again and Lola to giggle.

“I think we’ll leave you guys to it.” Tony took Harry by the hand and led him away from the boisterous trio laughing as Nicole aimed a perfect splash in Aden’s direction.

“You….you’ll pay for that Franklin!” Aden exclaimed as he bent down in order to scoop the water in his hands.

“No! Aden no! I have Lola, you can’t!” Nicole squealed and laughed as she held Lola up in front of her.

“Nu uh!” Aden laughed. “You aren’t using my baby as a shield! Come to daddy Lola.” He held his hands out for the little girl but Nicole began to back away.

“I don’t think so!” she giggled.

“Fine, I’ll just call Charlie; tell her you’re kidnapping my bub.”

“Ha! You wouldn’t dare! Who would you get to babysit if I get locked up?”

“That is true.” Aden nodded. “Truce yeah?” He held his hand out towards Nicole.

She looked at him suspiciously for a few moments before rearranging her hold on Lola so she could lift her free hand to shake his. “tru….Aden!!”

With a laugh Aden used his hold on Nicole’s hand to pull her towards him. “Chill out! Give us a hug!”

Smiling and being careful not to squash the small girl nestled between them Nicole wrapped her free arm around Aden’s shoulders.

“Your daddy is a big softy Lola.” She murmured.

They remained in the embrace for a few moments until the silence was interrupted by a shout.

“Don’t mind me.”

“Liam! Hey, what….what are you doing here?” Nicole extracted herself from Aden’s hold, pushing Lola into his arms as she went.

“Am I interrupting something?” Liam asked his tone frosty.

“Nope, we were just mucking around with Lola right Aden?”

“Yep, just mucking around.” Aden answered his tone matching Liam’s

“Well I came to see if you were gonna come with me to that party tonight?” Liam asked stepping right up to Nicole and snaking his arms around her waist. “I’ll make it worth your while.” He lowered his head and began trailing his lips along her neck.

Aden looked away feeling somewhat awkward and distracted himself by brushing sand from Lola’s hands which she was waving in front of his face.

“Liam!” Nicole squirmed in his embrace and pulled herself away from his lips. “I…its Lola’s party, I can’t leave yet.”

“Oh come on, you’ve been here hours.” Liam complained.

“Nic, Liam’s right.” Aden spoke up after pulling Lola’s hand from where she had placed it over his mouth. “You should get off; things here are pretty much done anyway.”

“Yeah but there’s all the tidying up and….” Nicole tried to argue but Aden interrupted her.

“Hey, you’ve done enough today. There’re plenty of us here to tidy up. You go and have fun yeah.”

“Are you sure?”

“Positive.” Aden insisted. “Lola, say bye-bye to auntie Nic. And thank you. Can you say thank you baby?”

Pulling herself completely from Liam Nicole stepped over and took Lola from Aden and held her close to her chest.

“You are more than welcome beautiful girl. I love you very much. Kiss?”

The little girl obliged, pressing her small pouty lips against Nicole’s.

“Good girl missy.” Aden smiled proudly. “Come here.”

As he lifted her from Nicole Lola began to babble a string of good-byes.

“ba ba ba ba”

“Clever girl.” Nicole’s grin was as proud as Aden’s “You’ve nearly got it haven’t you?”

“Well not really” Liam murmured “That was more baba…baby you know…..or not.” He added when he saw the look of anger flash across both Aden and Nicole’s faces.

“Let’s just…let’s go!” Nicole flashed Aden quick smile and winked at him before turning to Liam and pulling him away.

Aden stared after them until Lola reclaimed his attention by grabbing his face.

“Alright baby, I get it. I’m all yours angel.”

*******

By the time the party had finished and been cleared away it was close to six pm and after Aden had tidied away at home and bathed Lola it was later than her usual bed time.

“Right then bub, bottle and bed I think.” He told Lola as he helped her to stand up on the couch after dressing her in a pair of pyjamas. “You ready for bed huh?”

The little girl replied by holding her arms out towards him.

“You are such a good girl, daddy is so proud of you. Come on.” Aden lifted her into his arms as he stood up. “Let’s go get your milk.” He carried her into the kitchen and set about preparing a bottle of milk, now skilled at doing it with just one hand. “You know baby, these bottle of milk are gonna have to stop soon, you’re getting too big aren’t you?”

Lola replied with her usual babyish sounds, her smile as wide as it always was when she was getting her father’s undivided attention.

“Yeah, you smile now but you wait till they stop! I think daddy will be in the bad books then!” He joked. “I best make the most of you now hadn’t I, whilst you still love me. Do you love daddy?”

Without even a seconds hesitation Lola nodded her head.

“How about a kiss then huh, you got a kiss for me?”

Once again the little girl responded instantly, kissing Aden who then continued to pepper her face with kisses causing giggles to burst over her tiny lips.

“Clever girl!” Aden exclaimed once again. “You amaze me you know that angel? How’d I get so lucky hey? You are the best thing I ever did sweetheart.” He placed another kiss against her forehead then moved her away from him slightly so he could spend a few moments just gazing at her. “I love you Lola Belle.”

Holding her close to his body once again Aden picked up her bottle and keeping up a constant flow of chatter with Lola carried her up the stairs and into her room. Once they were over the threshold he lowered her to the floor and watched as she toddled over to the small sofa and attempted to climb up onto it.

“Not quite big enough for that yet bub.” He laughed as he approached and gave her a gentle nudge to help her up. She climbed to her feet and remained upright resting against the sofa back until Aden sat down. “Come on then” he encouraged and instantly the little girl plonked herself down onto his lap as he chuckled.

After making sure the both of them were comfortable Aden handed Lola her bottle which she took off him and began to drink straight away. Once he had a free hand he reached to the arm of the sofa and picked up the white photograph album which had been balancing there.

“Shall we look at your book? See who we can find?”

Lola let go of her bottle with one hand and used it to pull at the book, encouraging Aden to move it closer to her. As he usually did he opened the book to a random page, smiling to himself when he opened it fully to reveal a selection of wedding pictures, one of Belle on her own taking pride of place in the centre.

“Look here baby, who’s this?” He asked, his finger pointing to the picture. Lola took the bottle from her mouth and moved it down so she could get a better view of the book. “This is mommy isn’t it, see how beautiful she is. Can you say mommy?”

“Ma ma ma” Lola replied

“That’s it.” Aden murmured as tears began to pool in his eyes. “Mama.” He whispered as he pressed kisses into Lola’s hair. “She loved you so much and she’d be so proud of you Lola. She’s out there watching over you baby girl, keeping you safe.”

“Ma ma” she repeated as a tear dripped from Aden’s cheek and landed with a tiny splash on the picture of Belle.

“I’m not sure about this.” Aden complained as he carried Lola into the main house at the caravan park.

“Aden, come on, we’ve been over this.” Nicole replied as she followed him in. “Lola spends like half her time here anyway. I don’t know what your problem is.” She added as she dropped the bags she was carrying onto the table.

“Marilyn is here then, and it’s never late. I never miss bedtime! I mean it Nic, she’s had like….three hundred and seventy something bedtimes and I’ve been there for every one. She’s never ha….”

“That’s my point!” Nicole exclaimed cutting him off. “You haven’t been out for over a year! That’s…it can’t be healthy!”

“I’ve been out Nicole.” Aden tried to defend himself.

“Kids club doesn’t count as out Aden. You are coming with us tonight end of!”

“But…..”

“No buts!”

“But…just hear me out Nic.” Aden added when Nicole tried to interrupt him again. “I just don’t wanna feel like some third wheel or something with you and Liam and….”

“Hey, don’t be silly!” Nicole grabbed onto his free hand. “You will never be….I…Liam will be playing all night. He’s only picking me…us… up so we can get into the club. It’ll just be the two….we’ll be….”

“Who’ll be what?” Miles came bounding into the house from the door in the kitchen, interrupting Nicole.

“Nic was just talking me into going out.” Aden replied.

“What! Why’d you need talking into it? Mate you need to get out, have a beer or two, leave the nappies and dollies behind for a night. This little missy will be fine with me and her granddad won’t you chicken?” He lifted Lola from Aden’s arms.

“I dunno Miles. I mean I know she loves you and Roman and I know you are both great with her but…”

“Worried about bedtime?” Miles guessed.

“Yeah.” Aden sighed holding his hands out for Lola who raised her arms towards him. “Come here baby, come to daddy.” He held her against his chest and pressed kisses into her hair.

“Well look….Cinderella here isn’t ready for the ball yet…” Miles nodded at Nicole. “And prince char….nah, so doesn’t fit….Liam…isn’t due to pick you guys up for a bit. Why don’t you get her ready and put her down yourself, she won’t even know you’re gone that way.”

“I guess.” Aden agreed. “Shall daddy get you in your PJ’s Bub?”

“Well whilst you do that I’m gonna go see if I can find my fairy godmother or a pair of hair straighteners at least!” Nicole quipped. “I’ll race you Lola.” She added with a grin as she dropped a kiss onto the baby girl’s cheek as she passed.

*******

“Where is he?” Nicole looked at her phone for the third time in as many minutes.

“How late is he again?” Miles asked as Roman and Aden both chuckled at his nerve.

“He should have been here at 8.30.” Nicole snapped angrily, glancing at her phone again.

“And it’s after 9.30 now so…wow…over an hour late! That’s gotta be a record!”

“Miles!” Roman warned. “Honey, why don’t you call him?” He suggested to Nicole.

“You think I haven’t tried! I….that’s it! No more…I’m done!”

“Alright Nic.” Aden stood up and tentatively slipped an arm around her shoulder. “So what are we doing? Shall I take Lola…?”

“Leave Lola where she is.” Roman interrupted. “You are both ready to go out so go out!”

“We won’t get into the club without Liam and I’m really not in the mood anyway.” Nicole answered him.

“You don’t need to go clubbing, just go to Angelo’s or something.”

“I dunno…?” Aden replied this time looking to Nicole.

“We could I guess.” She returned Aden’s gaze. “Just for a couple of drinks.”

“Go on Aden.” Miles joined in encouraging “No point being all dressed up with nowhere to go.”

“And you’ll be ok with Lo….”

“Lola will be fine!” Roman interrupted him. “She’d have been fine if you’d have gone to the club and she’ll be fine if you go to Angelo’s. Now go!” He stood up from his seat and placed a hand on both Aden and Nicole’s shoulders and gently pushed them towards the door.

“Ok, ok! We’re going!” Nicole giggled.

“We won’t be too late.” Ade called over his shoulder. “I have my phone…she shouldn’t wake up but if she does just…..”

“Yeah, we know…” Miles replied “…We’ll just turn down the volume on the baby monitor and up on the TV!”

*******

Aden eyed his phone which was placed in the centre of the table. Nicole had gone to the bathroom a few minutes earlier and it was taking all of his willpower not to call Roman to check on his baby girl. He tentatively reached out his hands. Just as he made contact with the phone a voice bellowed across the room.

“Don’t even think about it!”

Nicole strode over and unceremoniously dropped a bottle of beer onto the table in front of him.

“I just wanna….”

“Aden, Lola’s fine! Dad would call otherwise.” She reassured him as she slid into the seat opposite him, sipping from a glass of wine.

“Ok! I’m being kinda neurotic aren’t I? Sorry!” He picked up the bottle and took a long swig from it. “Cheers by the way.” He said tipping the bottle towards her as he lowered it to the table.

“Cheers.” Nicole returned the gesture. “So this is actually really nice. Why have we never done this before?”

The drinks that Nicole had brought back with her were their third and they had spent the whole time chatting, comfortable in each others presence.

“I dunno…” Aden shrugged “…but you’re right, it is nice. I’m gonna miss you Nic.”

“I…..I haven’t…I might not…..”

“Nic, how often do chances like this come along?”

The two of them had spent the past hour discussing the job offer that Nicole had received the previous week. It was with a large fashion house in the city but she had kept the news to her self due to her reluctance to make the move from the bay to the city.

“You’d be crazy not to take it.” Aden added as she shrugged.

“I don’t know Aden...leaving you guys behind….”

“Hardly princess! The city is like forty minutes away as you’d know seeing as how you are there most days for uni.”

“Yeah but moving there would be different.” She pouted slightly at his teasing.

“Can’t you just commute like you do now?”

“Not really, the hours will be a bit more intense than they are now and I don’t fancy working late and then having to drive all that way home and….I don’t know Aden.”

“You know what I think. We’ll miss you heaps but you can come back home for weekends and holidays and stuff. You can’t miss this opportunity Nic, you are far too talented. Don’t let that go to waste!”

“I suppose you are right.” She conceded with a sigh. “It’s not like I have that much keeping me here.”

“Thanks very much!” Aden exclaimed with mock offence.

“You know what I mean!” Nicole replied with a grin that soon slipped as she continued. “It’s not like the love of my life is here is it.”

“So Liam isn’t…?

“What do you think?”

“I think we need more drinks.” Aden answered avoiding the subject as he quickly stood and headed for the bar.

*******

“Nic…Shhh!” Aden cried as Nicole slammed the door open and then tripped over one of the chairs arranged around the table.

“You’re making more noise!” She fired back with a giggle as she tried to right the chair to its original position.

“No I’m not!” He grumbled as he crashed into the chair she had just re-arranged.

“What are you even doing here anyway?” Nicole asked as she slumped down onto the couch. “You don’t love here….live here…you don’t live here”

The effects of the alcohol coupled with the fresh air they got on the walk to the caravan park had made both of them more than a little tipsy.

“I know that! I’m not that drunk.” Aden replied. “I just want to see my girl and kiss her goodnight then I’ll go home. Where is she?”

“You put her to bed Aden…in my room.” Nicole answered.

“Oh yeah! Come on then.” Aden held out a hand for her when she made no attempt to move.

“What? I’m comfy here!”

“Come on, how can you resist by beautiful girl huh? You know you wanna see her. Besides, if I’m left alone in your room who knows what I might do…which one is your underwear drawer?”

“You wouldn’t dare!” Nicole hissed but allowed him to pull her up non-the-less.

They made their way, as quietly as they could, up to Nicole’s room. Aden gently pushed open the door and let out an audible sigh as his eyes landed on his daughter nestled snuggly in the travel crib.

“There she is.” He whispered. “My girl. Hey baby.” He entered the room and crouched down next to the crib running a finger softly down the baby girl’s cheek.

“Don’t wake her!” Nicole warned as she followed him in.

“It takes more than that to wake her when she’s out like this.” He replied repeating the action with his finger to prove his point. “You’re like your daddy aren’t you sweetheart? We’d both sleep through an earthquake!”

Nicole dropped down onto the edge of her bed, leaning forward to rest her arms on the edge of the crib.

“She’s just like you.” She murmured quietly.

“You think?” He asked. “She’s gorgeous Nic, look at how gorgeous she is.” He turned from Nicole and focused his gaze back on his daughter.

“Just like her daddy.” Her whispered declaration was barely louder than a breath but Aden just about heard it.

“You think I’m gorgeous?” He asked. All the sense of teasing that had been present throughout their evening together was gone. As Aden shifted his position to perch on the edge of the bed the atmosphere between them shifted and suddenly became something more….a spark of something crackling between them. “Nic?”

She didn’t know if he was pressing her for an answer or asking for her permission for what she was sure was about to happen so she just nodded.

Slowly he inched his way towards her until his lips brushed against hers.

An involuntary gasp left her as he leant back a fraction and stared into her eyes, questioning her without words.

Unable to respond with anything more Nicole nodded her head once again and before a second had passed Aden’s lips crashed against hers.

His hands found their way to tangle in her hair as the kiss intensified. Hers rested against his chest and after a few minutes she used them to gently push him away.

“Aden…that was…we shouldn’t have…..”

He stared at her silently for a few moments as he brushed wisps of hair from her face.

“It’s alright Nic.” He murmured moving his hands from her face. He kicked his shoes off and clambered properly onto her bed. “Come here.”

“I…Aden….”

“You need to sleep princess, come on.” He pulled on her hand until she was lying next to him. Reaching over her he switched off the bedside lamp that had been illuminating the room plunging them into darkness. “Sweet dreams.” He whispered as he brushed a kiss against the top of her head.

“You too.” Nicole replied as she cuddled into his warm embrace.

Well, that's a big "Awwww" from me at least. It was perfect, I loved all the banter between them. And Miles and Roman were great too, especially Miles' comment about ignoring the baby monitor.Loved Nicole's "Don't even think about it" when Aden started eyeing his phone. The kiss was sweet but I'm glad they didn't take it any further:I think they'd have regretted it if they rushed into anything and Nicole's still got a lot of unfinished business with Liam.Really looking forward to seeing what happens next.

That was such a great chapter. Wow at that last part. Kind of a shocker but Nic & Aden have been getting a lot closer.

Another great update.

& oh yes, it was madness of Friday to get the Take That tickets.

9am to 7pm on Friday. Shocking - completely terrible. But I got them in the end & it was so worth it.

Anyways, I loved Aden & his worry over Lola. So typical, protective Aden.

Great chapter & I look forward to the next one.

Love Carina xxx
