ebrett84 Posted July 4, 2010 Report Posted July 4, 2010 I had a feeling the Argentines would get exposed once they played against an actual good team. Agree with Slade that the weaknesses in Maradona's approach were highlighted. I really didn't see the Dutch getting through to the semis. I thought they were pretty overrated before the tournament began, but I thought the same about Brazil, so I'm glad to see them gone. It looks like whoever wins out of Spain and Germany will win the whole thing. I picked Spain before the tournament started and I have $100 riding on them at 6 /1 so here's hoping. What's your problem with Germany JM? I understand that most German teams in the past have been almost Italian-like in their deathly dullness, but this team is actually good to watch.
Ryan Posted July 4, 2010 Report Posted July 4, 2010 If Spain or Germany win the World Cup, New Zealand will go down as the only team in 2010's World Cup to not lose a game. I like that idea. GO SPAIN AND GERMANY! My understanding, though I might be talking ****e, is that a penalty shoot out is officially recorded as a draw, you don't actually "lose" that match, so Holland or Uruguay could win the title and not "lose"
Miranda Posted July 4, 2010 Report Posted July 4, 2010 I am shocked to say I was rather charmed by Germany yesterday . They are mostly very young, seem less cynical and machine-like than previous German teams (e.g. Klinsmann, Matthaeus and that lot). They sang their national anthem very sweetly, all look about 12 and threw themselves into the game with enthusiasm and commitment.

I think it's visceral... no denying how well they play though. And I also had money on Argentina and/or Netherlands grand final a week ago. Fantasy... but it's much more fun rooting for the underdogs
Ryan Posted July 5, 2010 Report Posted July 5, 2010 I remember one of the memes of the early days of the forum was my complete dislike of the Germans. A lot of it was tongue in cheek, but it's been so long since I did, it might end messy if I said anything about it. I put an e/w bet on The Netherlands before the tournament, partly because I always like to support the team that knocks you out.
idris Posted July 5, 2010 Report Posted July 5, 2010 When will we be under starter's orders to pick our World Cup XI's ? After the final ?
Adia Posted July 6, 2010 Report Posted July 6, 2010 I had picked Argentina at the start of the tournament so disappointed they are gone and that they were absolutely thrashed by Germany. No hand of God to help them I guess... I'd like Spain to win from here, but the Germans will be a big gauntlet to get past. They have peaked at the right time and have shown some great resilience - especially as there wasn't very much expectation because they are such a young team. Anyone know who the psychic octopus has picked for the finals?

I just read that ironically the last time the Octopus was wrong was in 2008 when Spain played Germany...
