Looks like Father Newton is using religion as an excuse to abuse his daughters. That is so very wrong. But why didn't Viv fight against him? She seems strong enough.

Father Newton is a man of the cloth so he thinks that hiding behind his religion and using this "power" will fool those in the community. Unless people have proof of what he has done then he can charm those who don't really know him. He's a Jekyll and Hyde character - at home he can be pure evil towards his daughters and to the outside world the charm oozes out of him. People assume that since he is a clergyman that he is holy, untouchable to some degree and that he can get away with that sort of behaviour towards his own daughters even though it is totally wrong and Viv knows this and Steven has the notion of this too.

Initially Viv did fight against him with the truth about being locked up in the cupboard under the stairs but not many people believed her word against her father's. To top it all off, Reverend Newton used his trump card Viv's sister Tammy to lure her back home. Tammy is Viv's Achilles' Heel and Viv would do anything to protect her sister as we've seen when she took the blame for dropping the milk jug. If you mean fighting back physically then maybe she could have if she had the strength to do so but remember that she was deprived of food by her father and therefore might not have felt strong enough. She does have enough courage to physically fight back though.

This is why religion is an evil poison. People are sucked in by its "good", innocent-looking mask when the truth is it's a giant scam and used as cover for all kinds of abuse.

So, um, not a fan of religion then?Because speaking as someone who goes to church, has a reverend as an uncle and another one as the grandfather of my nephew, I think I can safely say that Reverend Newton is very much the exception rather than the rule.Even on television.

Haha well said. Old H&A Fan is a total joke, don't listen to anything he says.

Gee thanks GameTime. Nice to have someone on here who pays me compliments like that.

Anyway, let's get back to the topic at hand, shall we? The episodes in the 1989 season.

Notice how "Pippa" is blaming Dodge for everything that is going wrong in the Fletcher household. Not only does she blame him for Steven getting into trouble and taking the rap for Dodge's car theft/joyriding and getting a criminal record out of it, she also blames Dodge for the way little sally has been carrying on lately. Further, she even blames Dodge for Carly's absenteeism.

See how irrational this is getting?

Furthermore, Alsa continues to support "Pippa" for her blame-Dodge stance. She understands why the little one is so ungrateful to Dodge. Doesn't matter if he saved her life, the main thing is, poor little sally doesn't like Dodge so it's Dodge that has got to go!

Viv's father doesn't represent the majority of Christians, please don't be ignorant enough to think that. He is just abusing his power, and not following the true Christian faith.

I remember watching that storyline when I was a kid.I always thought Reverend Newton was creepy.I loved when Bobby locked him in the cupboard helping Viv and Tammy to escape. :)

I wish you would go.

And Viv, such beautiful eyes.

I wish you would go.
Wish who would go? Me?

Anyway, enough of the stealthy insults, now back on the topic at hand:

Episode 363

The dummy duo and their girlfriend Marilyn are practicing for their "band" but Stacey isn't impressed. That music spells doom for Dodge who by the way is making an honest living with Steven to pay off his fine. There is no follow-up for Viv/Tammy in this episode. Tammy has gone out of sight and out of mind

(for the time being).

However I think an important scene which nobody has mentioned is when Newton was praying (alone) to God for the demon to be removed from Viv's soul. This is important because it shows that in his own very twisted way he believes what he is doing is what God wants. In other words, he is not being deliberately evil and just hiding behind religion as an excuse to abuse his kids. He's just gone a little mad. IIRC Casey Mitchell's mother was exactly the same and then Melody Jones' mother went that way as well (though that was more interesting because we actually saw her descent into madness happen onscreen).

Sally falling into the sea is the most hilarious scene ever!!!

I can't believe they let Kate do it, it looked quite dangerous. Perhaps she wasn't meant to fall so hard...?
