Rev Newton - a man with an overly strict punishment code.

The problem I have with this villain is that his story hasn't been properly resolved. Sure, Viv got away from him, but what about her sister? And, the reverend also deserves to get his comeuppance.

Yes, I did find the end of Reverend Newton's storyline very disappointing.I thought, when Don kind of tricked him into revealing his true colours when they were alone, that it was heading towards him being exposed but instead it just fizzled out, we got a couple of scenes of characters going "We can't help Tammy so let's just forget about it" and then it was dropped completely.

I'm finding the way Morag's been written recently very odd. There was a period, round about the time this storyline started when she was trying to take Sally away from Tom and Pippa, when she seemed to have regressed to the character she was when she first came in as if they were making her an out-and-out villain again, whereas prior to that she seemed to basically get along with everyone apart from Bobby. But now she's a bit sympathetic again, if still typically acerbic. And I'm sorry to say but Danny does seem a bit of a cartoon villain so far, wandering around doing random nasty things to Morag.I don't think the 1993 Morag was really any more evil than her 1988/early 1989 character, selfish and manipulative but still with a bit of humanity in there. In fact I seem to remember there were a couple of times when I actually quite liked her, certainly as much as I did in some of her early 2000s stints when she was still a fairly unsympathetic character, it wasn't really until about 2004 that I started to find her truly likeable.

I find it hard to pick between 88 and 88 - both splendid seasons, after which it was never the same again, and each with individual standouts. 88 has Lynn, and Floss & Nev. But 89 has Morag and Dodge.

Just to be contrary, I ADORE the Image story. It is utterly ludicrous but that's why I love it! Whoevere thought it was a good move to get rid of Lance & Martin (presumably the same clown who thought it was a good idea to get rid of Tom and Celia too) should have been sacked on the spot!

Do you really think those characters were axed, Ian? I'm fairly shocked if they were. To me, Celia is the best character of '88 and '89, she was the heart of the show really. A truly wonderful character.

I think the Image story could have been ok, but I find Lance to be a fairly unlikeable character a lot of the time. I know he's meant to be extremely stupid, but it really annoyed me how he went out of his way to ruin the band and let it be known that they were manufactured when it clearly was going to hurt Martin and Marilyn.

One thing I have noticed about 1989 is that they seem to be trying to make Lance and Martin separate characters rather than just a double act. The writers have invested in scenes where they appear with other characters, and I think that helps in a way. Out of the Image story, I think I loved the character of Nina the most. Her interview on the Saturday morning show was brilliant.

1988 is without doubt a superior season IMO. Although yes, the introduction of Morag and Marilyn as permanent characters does give the season an edge. Also, the Narelle/Philip/Stacey/Bobby/Frank friendship was lost, and I thought that sharehouse at the back of the shop was a truly inspired idea.

I think first seasons of many TV series usually benefit (unless they are dire to begin with and are rescued (Neighbours)) from the fact they are the first series and that when they set out character outlines and stuff it's all very contained. From then onwards everything is always in the middle of something, something before, something after.

They're also usually telling a story. Though there were many different strands, the whole family moving to Summer Bay was obviously something that they wanted telling. Viv, perhaps not, but they needed a way to get the young blood into the series.

Going back a decade, I always though the first two and slightly through 3 and 4 of Dawson's Creek, there was some sort of story, but that come 5&6, it was just because people watched it.

Is that all?

I know Tom was axed, Edward (that's why Vanessa quit as well). I don't know about Celia, Lance & Martin, but I assume so. There seems to have been a determined effort to 'sex' up the show with more young characters from a certain point in 1990 and, along with less interesting stories, is what led me to eventually lose interest when it ceased to remain the show I'd started out with.

Dead on about DC, Ryan. 5 and 6 were mostly a complete waste of time (though there were a few good ones toward the end of the last season). Though that's a bit off-topic. ;)

By the fact they all start at the same time and finish at the same time, it looks like either turning or not getting offered new contracts after that time.

BTW I just want to say it's great to be watching the Early Years with you lot, I really anjoy chatting and reading the discussion in here. :)

I can see where you're coming from regarding pilot seasons, Ryan. I still think that 1989 suffered with the loss of Bevan Lee. I only wish that he'd had more involvement in Home and Away over the years, because every time he is involved, the show is flawless. His writing is brilliant, he knows the characters inside ou, and I believed in almost everything that happened in the episodes that happened during his time on the show.

When Dave Worthington took over, I noticed some characters behaving slightly different to how they would have normally, and it became more plot driven and stories came less from the characters. For example I haven't ever bought the way that Pippa has started to get a bit flighty and self-righteous and overreact to Tom being at work etc since 1989. She was always a calm and collected character AFAIK. How can anyone forget the wonderful background to Celia's character in '88 and the pain she went through on Anzac Day and when her ring was stolen by Gary Samuels. Her monologue scenes talking about the past are some of the most touching scenes I've seen in any soap to date.

Was it reported at the time that Tom Fletcher was axed, Ian? Or do you know someone In The Know ;)

Bobby continues to be the star of the show for me, whether in 1988 or '89, I can imagine why people wondered whether Home and Away could go on

when she was killed off in 1993. Yes, I can't beliee I put this in spoiler tags

I agree about Pippa. She's been really out of character and dislikeable this year. I didn't think she was written properly through a lot of the Dodge storyline.

I also read that Tom was axed as they wanted Pippa to be a single mum. (You can see where they are coming from to be honest. Since Tom started working in the Macklin office he hasn't really been around in the Fletcher house anyway).
