Episode 45

The next morning, Carina and Kat are at Civic High School to meet with Mr Armstrong about enrolling Carina in Year 10.
*Mr Armstrong puts his head outside the door*
Mr Armstrong: Carina Howard?
Carina: Yes?
Mr Armstrong: Come inside.
*Carina and Kat go inside*
A few minutes later, Kat is talking to Mr Armstrong about Carinas past life
Kat: Carina has been homeless since she was born. Shes been living with me for a few weeks.
Mr Armstrong: I see.
Kat: Shes been home schooled at the shelter. But I want her to be at this school so she has friends her own age.
Mr Armstrong: Then its all set. You start tomorrow Miss Howard.
Carina: Thank you so much. *smiles*
Mr Armstrong: Ill have your timetable prepared as well.
Carina: Thanks.

On the other side of town, Alex gets off the bus and starts to walk through Macquarie University.
Alex: This place is bigger than school.
*A student (Lauren Watson) at the uni approaches Alex*
Lauren: What are you doing here?
Alex: UmmIm a new student!
Lauren: Are you? *looks at Alex suspiciously*
Alex: Uhyes.
Lauren: I know youre in high school. Because my stepsister Coral goes there.
Alex: Coral Thompson?
Lauren: Yes.
Alex: Oh. Ill just leave. *starts to head out the door*
Lauren: Wait! Why dont I introduce you to some of my friends.
Alex: I would like that.
*Lauren and Alex walk over to the university quad where Lauren introduces Alex to her friends Charlotte Hawkins, Patrick Chaka and Gary Farmer*
Lauren: Guys. This is Alex.
Charlotte: Hello.
Patrick: Sup.
Gary: Hey.
Charlotte: So, are you new?
Alex: Well
Lauren: Yes he is.
Alex: Yes I am. Im a fresher!
Patrick: What are you studying bro?
Alex: I got a rugby scholarship.
Patrick: Mad!
Gary: Which team do you want to play for?
Alex: West Tigers.
Patrick: My favourite team!
Alex: Theres so many people here.
Lauren: I know right. Its much bigger than high school. Want to help us study?
Alex: Sure.
*Alex sits with the group as they begin to study*
At lunchtime, Jessica is eating lasagne in the canteen when Alexis and Sumara approach her.
Sumara: Hey Jess. Wheres Alex?
Alexis: He didnt sit for the Maths exam.
Jessica: WHAT?!? He told me he was going to sit for that exam.
Alexis: Well, he didnt sit for it.
Jessica: Ill ask the boys.
Sumara: No good. They havent seen him either
Jessica: Dont worry. I WILL find out what hes been doing!! *walks off*
Alexis: Never seen her so angry.
Sumara: Can you blame her after whats been happening?
Alexis: No, I dont.

That afternoon, Alison arrives home from TAFE to find Jenny in the kitchen.
Alison: Jen? What are you doing here? Didnt the doctor tell you to rest.
Jenny: I have a proposition for you dear cousin. Take a seat.
*Alison sits at the kitchen table*
Jenny: Youve lived here for three months and how would you like me to give you this house.
*Alison looks stunned*
Alison: Jenny! You really want to give up this house? I mean, youve lived here since you were two.
Jenny: Im going to be living with Brock permanently so I thought I would give the house to you. All you need to do is sign the deed.
Alison: Wouldnt you have to sell it first?
Jenny: I already did.
Alison: You dont mean
Jenny: Thats right. You now own this house.
Alison: Where do I sign?
*Jenny gives Alison the deed. Alison signs it before handing it over to Jenny*
Jenny: Take care of it dear cousin.
Alison: I will. *hugs Jenny*
Meanwhile, Alex arrives home to find Jessica standing in the living room.
Alex: Hey Jess.
Jessica: Where were you during the Maths exam?!?
Alex: In the hall doing it of course.
Jessica: LIAR!!! *slaps Alex* Because Alexis and Sumara told me that you werent in the hall!
Alex: Theyre lying!
Jessica: I dont think so!
Alex: WHY DO YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHERE I AM EVERY SINGLE MINUTE!!! YOURE JUST LIKE A MINI VERSION OF MUM!!!
Jessica: Either you tell me where you went or Ill tell Mum!!
Alex: JUST TRY IT!!!

The next day (Wednesday), Alison and her friends are in class waiting for Lolly to arrive.

Alison: Guess what girls?

Melissa: What?

Alison: Since Jenny has moved in with Brock, she sold the house to me.

Sylvia: That’s wonderful news!

Alison: I was wondering if any of you girls would like to live with me?

Rachael: I’d like too, but I would rather stay living in my father’s house.

Sylvia: I can’t leave Mum behind. She needs me.

Amy: What about Nina?

Melissa: She moving back in with us next week.

Amy: I’ll live with you Ali.

Alison: You will?

Amy: I hate living in my flat. There’s a lot of trouble in that particular building.

Alison: When can you move in?

Amy: Friday sound good?

Alison: Yes.

*Vicki enters the room*

Alison: Hey Vic! Just in time!

Vicki: Did I miss out on something?

Alison: Jenny sold our house. And guess who bought it?

Vicki: You?

*Alison nods her head*

Vicki: That’s excellent.

Sylvia: We have to study hard for our half-yearly exams.

Rachael: True.

*Lolly enters the room*

Lolly: Good morning class. Today, we are going to go to the science lab and doing an experiment on a cow’s heart.

Class: YUCK!!!!!

At Civic High School, Catherine and the rest of Year 8 are waiting outside the hall to sit for their Science exam.

Todd: Hey Catherine! You must be feeling SO guilty now aye!

Catherine: Shut up Todd!

Todd: Ooh!! I like to make people cry!!!

*Coral Thompson glares at Todd*

Coral: She told you to SHUT UP!!!!!

Todd: Close your mouth Coral!!!

Catherine: A***hole!

Todd: I know you are!!!

*Sumara grabs Todd’s shirt and pins him to a wall*

Sumara: Now listen here dog breath. Leave Catherine and Coral alone or I will take matters into my own hands!

Todd: What are you going to do bitch?

Sumara: THIS!!!! *slaps Todd across the face*

*Todd walks away*

Riggot: I hope Alex comes today.

Leon: Me too.

Meanwhile, Carina’s first day at Civic High gets off to a bad start when Natalie Evans starts trouble for her.

Natalie: Hey new kid! I bet you can’t do fractions because you have no education! *laughs*

Mareta: Leave her alone!

Natalie: Or what Cookie Monster???

*Suddenly, Kiara Tangye stands up from her seat and grabs Natalie’s shirt*

Kiara: What did you call Mareta you racist cow???

Natalie: Cookie Monster

Kiara: Oh really? *slaps Natalie across the face* Next time you pick on her or the new kid, you’re DEAD!!!

Natalie: S-sure.

Kiara: Good! *walks over to Carina and Mareta* Are you girls okay?

Carina: Yes.

Kiara: The name’s Kiara. What’s yours?

Carina: Carina.

*Kiara shakes Carina’s hand*

Kiara: Nice to meet you.

*Their Maths teacher Miss Saenz walks inside the classroom*

Miss Saenz: Good morning class. Today, we are going to do a fractions quiz. So lets get our pens out and start doing our work. *smiles*

At Macquarie University, Alex with Lauren and Charlotte listening to one of Professor April Hutchins’ weekly lectures.

Prof. April: As most of you are already aware, the SRC has organised a barbecue for Friday. Students and their family and friends are welcome to attend. We’ll also be holding a cake stall and a trivia competition.

Charlotte: Phooey!

Prof. April: I heard that Charlotte!

*Charlotte smiles at Prof. April*

Alex *whispers*: I’m not going to it.

Lauren: You don’t have to if you don’t want to.

Alex: Thanks.

*When the lecture is over, Alex says goodbye to Lauren and Charlotte before catching the bus back to Civic. He gets off at the school only to find Julianna and Jessica waiting for him.*

Julianna: I am SO disappointed in you Alex. You skipped two exams!!!!

*Alex looks at her blankly*

Jessica: Sumara told us that you weren’t in the hall again!

Alex: So what???

Julianna: Don’t you care about your education?

Alex: WHAT THE HELL DO YOU WANT FROM ME???

Jessica: We want you to get some help!!! It was an accident!!!

Alex: F**K THIS!!!! *storms off*

*Julianna sits down and cries while Jessica hugs her*

At her house, Alison is studying with Vicki when they hear a loud knock on the front door.

Vicki: What on earth’s that?

Alison: The front door. *walks over to the front door* I’m coming! I’m coming! *opens the door to find Christine standing there*

Christine: I need to talk to you. *starts to cry*

Alison: Come on. Come inside and we can talk. *takes Christine’s arms before walking her inside*

After Vicki leaves, Alison sits down to talk to Christine, Julianna and Jessica.
Alison: Whats going on?
Christine: Alex hasnt done two exams!!! Hes been going somewhere else instead!!!
Alison: Where do you think hes been?
Jessica: Im not too sure. But we will get to the bottom of it.
Julianna: I blame Catherine for this.
Alison: Why is that Anna?
Julianna: Well, if she didnt say he couldnt do anything right and call him an idiot none of this wouldve happened!
Alison: So youre saying that Catherine damaged Alexs self-esteem?
Julianna: Thats right!
Alison: Should I talk to him?
Christine: He just shuts everybody out now. The only person he talks to is Carina.
Alison: Then Ill talk to her.
So that evening, Alison goes over to Kats house where Carina has been living to talk to her about Alex.
*Alison knocks on the door*
Carina *from inside*: Coming! *opens the door* May I help you?
Alison: Uh, yes. Im looking for Carina Howard.
Carina: Thats me. Are you Alison?
Alison: Yes. Im Kats friend from TAFE.
Carina: I know who you are. What do you want?
Alison: I want to talk about my friend Alex. Why does he only speak to you?
Carina: Im sorry. I really dont know what youre talking about *tries to close the door but Alison throws it open*
Alison: Now look here Miss. I dont want any trouble from you. I just want you to tell me why Alex only talks to you and why he missed two of his half-yearly exams.
Carina: How do I know that I can trust you?
Alison: Im a very trustworthy person. *enters the house*
*Carina sits down on a rocking chair while Alison just stands there*
Carina: You know how me and Alex met at the homeless shelter right?
*Alison nods her head*
Carina: Well, he told me all about how Catherine turned his friends against him and calling him names. He just had enough of it. The reason he skipped two exams is that he was over at Macquarie University trying to meet some new people that would be his friend. Is that so bad?? *starts to cry*
*Alison hugs Carina*
Alison: If only his family wouldve known. I understand why you are covering for him. I really do.
*Carina wipes away her tears and smiles*
Carina: I hope he returns for the HSIE exam tomorrow.
Alison: So do I.

The next day (Thursday), Alex sits his HSIE exam in the hall. When the exams are over, its lunchtime.
Leon: How did you do girl?
Hayley: Not bad baby boy. Yourself?
Leon: I think I did okay.
Hayley: Listen. *holds both of Leons hands* I was wondering if we could take this relationship to the next level?
Leon: So soon? Hayley, weve only been dating for three weeks.
Hayley: And?
Leon: Its just too soon for me. If we were dating for six months, then maybe I would think it over.
Hayley: In other words, you dont love me.
Leon: No! Thats not true. I think you are the most attractive girl Ive seen in ages. I just dont want to have sex right now.
Hayley: Youre right. Its too soon.
*They kiss*
Meanwhile, Alex is eating his lunch when Catherine approaches him.
Catherine: Alex
Alex: Buzz off.
Catherine: I just want to talk.
Alex: Fine.
Catherine: Im really sorry for all of this. I should never have called you an idiot and that you couldnt do anything right. I never turned the boys against you. So what do you say? Friends?
Alex: Go to hell!
*Catherine gasps*
Catherine: I understand. I just hope that we can be friends someday.
Alex: Are you hard of hearing? I DONT WANT TO BE FRIENDS WITH YOU EVER!!!! YOU ARE NOTHING BUT A TWO-FACED BITCH!!!!
*Catherine looks shocked and upset*
Catherine: Alex, I didnt mean
Alex: DIDNT MEAN WHAT???? DIDNT MEAN WHAT????
Catherine: I.
Alex: SAVE IT CATHERINE!!!!! I DONT WANT TO HEAR IT!!!!
Catherine: The boys miss you!!!! They want you to talk to them!!!!
Alex: WHY??? SO THEY CAN EAR BASH ME AS WELL???
Catherine: Alex
Alex: YOU KNOW WHAT??? DONT EVER TALK TO ME! DONT EVER CALL ME! AND DONT EVER ASK ME OUT ON SOCIAL OUTINGS AGAIN!!! BECAUSE AS FAR AS IM CONCERNED, YOU NO LONGER EXIST!!!! *storms off followed by Jessica who has witnessed the whole thing*
*Catherine starts crying hysterically*
Natalie: What an attention-seeker!
Alexis: Shut up Evans!!! *walks over to Catherine and hugs her*
Catherine: He hates me!
Alexis: Shu****s okay sis.
*Catherine continues to cry*

After school, Catherine is walking around the shopping centre when Natalie approaches her.
Natalie: If it isnt the little attention-seeker?
Catherine: Im not in the mood to listen to any crap, you hear me Natalie?
Natalie: I dont think so. Why dont you cry to Seru?
*Kiara manages to hear this and pushes Natalie over*
Kiara: YOU WANT TO SAY THAT AGAIN NATALIE EVANS???
*Natalie gets back on her feet*
Natalie: Ill show you!!! *goes to hit Kiara. However, Kiara blocks it*
Kiara: Not a wise move bitch! On your way woman!
*Natalie storms off*
Kiara: Are you okay?
Catherine: Not really.
Kiara: Come here sis. *goes over to Catherine and hugs her*
At her house, Vicki is talking to Dina and Nina when the phone rings.
Vicki: Hello? Hi Karen. How are you? Im good. Whats the matter? Oh no. When do you want me to come over? Tomorrow? Ill be there. Stay strong Karen. Love you. Bye *hangs up the phone*
Nina: Is something wrong Vic?
Vicki: That was my sister Karen. She just called to say that Mum is in hospital.
Dina: What happened girl?
Vicki: She had a heart attack.
Dina: Oh, Vicki. Im so sorry.
Nina: How bad is it?
Vicki: Well, shes in theatre now. So, I have to drive all the way to Dubbo tomorrow and visit her.
Dina: You want us to come with you?
Vicki: No. Ill be all right.
Nina: We are here if you need us.
Vicki: I know. Thanks for that.
*The girls group hug*
