Episode 32 - Manipulation

On Friday morning, Alison is getting ready to go to TAFE when the phone rings. It is Rachael.

Alison: Hello? Oh, hi Rachael! How’s Samoa? You’re what? That’s great! I can’t wait to tell the girls. I was just on my way there now. We look forward to seeing you. Bye. *hangs up the phone*

At TAFE, Alison talks to her friends about her conversation with Rachael on the phone.

Alison: She’s coming back next week!

Sylvia: Really?

Alison: Yes.

Melissa: This is so exciting! We have to plan a party for her return!

Amy: Why don’t we make it a surprise party?

Alison: That’s a good idea Amy!

Erin: Who’s living in her house at the moment?

Sylvia: One of her aunties. She’s moved in permanently.

*Melissa suddenly lets out a sigh*

Alison: What’s wrong Mel?

Melissa: I had an argument with Dina last night. My mother is apparently giving them a hard time.

Erin: Why?

Melissa: I don’t know. I gave them an ultimatum; they treat my mother right or they get kicked out.

Amy: That’s a bit harsh isn’t it?

Melissa: Maybe. But it’s their only choice.

Alison: Sad.

*The girls start to write their work*

That afternoon, Alexis’ class has Maths and she walks in the classroom drunk. The class and her teacher don’t know that she is drunk.

Alexis: Hellooooo!!!

*Some classmates go ‘hey’ or ‘hello’ as Alexis sits in the back row with Catherine*

Alexis: Catherine my sweetie! How’s it going?

Catherine: *quite puzzled* Good.

Alexis: Well! Let’s see what the ole books have got for us today!!!

*From the back row, Riggot turns around and sees Alexis*

Riggot: Are you drunk?

Alexis: N-no. What gave you that idea?

Catherine: You are!

Alexis: No I’m not. *gets out a bottle of wine and drinks it*

*The maths teacher, Mr Ta turns around and sees Alexis drinking the wine*

Mr Ta: Alexis!!!! What are you doing drinking alcohol?

Alexis: Ah, **** off you bloody idiot!

Mr Ta: My god. You’re drunk. Catherine take her to the office please.

Catherine: Come on Alexis. *helps a drunken Alexis out of the classroom*

Alexis: All off these bloody idiots today!!! They think they’re better than everyone else! *from outside the classroom* BUT THEY AREN’T ARE THEY?!?

*The whole class remain silent for a few minutes before they burst out laughing*

When Melissa gets home from TAFE, she sees her mother in tears.

Melissa: What’s wrong Mum?

Mrs Powell: Nina slapped me across the face.

Melissa: SHE WHAT?!? WHERE IS SHE?!?

Mrs Powell: I don’t know.

*A few hours later, Nina and Dina arrive home from grocery shopping*

Melissa: I want a word with you Nina Caliente.

Nina: Sure.

Melissa: Why don’t you go upstairs Mum?

Mrs Powell: Sure dear. *goes upstairs*

*Melissa, Nina and Dina go into the living room and sit down on separate couches*

Nina: What seems to be the problem?

Melissa: I want to know why you slapped my mother in the face!

Nina: I didn’t!

Dina: Nina?

Melissa: She says that you slapped her while I was at TAFE.

Nina: I never slapped your mother in the face.

Melissa: THEN WHY THE HELL IS SHE CRYING HER EYES OUT?!?

Dina: Melissa, calm down.

Melissa: SORRY DINA. I CAN’T!

Nina: I never hit her Melissa. She is lying.

Melissa: SO, NOW YOU’RE CALLING MY MOTHER A LIAR?!? IS THAT RIGHT?!?

Nina: Why don’t you believe me?

Melissa: Because I know you’re lying to me.

Nina: *starts to tear up* Dina?

Dina: I’m sorry Nina. Not this time.

Melissa: I phoned Alison. You can live her.

Nina: Why?

Melissa: Because I don’t want you in this house anymore. You’re no longer welcome here.

Nina: But I didn’t do it!

Dina: Stop lying Nina! As far as I’m concerned, you’re not my sister. *shoves Nina out of the door*

*Nina stands outside the door sobbing while Mrs Powell looks on with a smirk on her face*

That night, Nina is in the living room with Alison sobbing.

Nina: I’m telling you Alison I didn’t do it. I would never hit an old lady like Essie.

Alison: I know honey.

Nina: Dina wasn’t even there but she just believed Melissa. And then she says that I’m not her sister.

Alison: I’m really sorry Nina. *hugs her*

Nina: At least I’m away from the drama. I feel safe being with you.

Alison: I tell you what. We’ll go to Leon’s presentation tomorrow morning and you can forget all about it.

Nina: Who else is going?

Alison: Me, Sylvia, Riggot and you of course. Not to mention Dina.

Nina: I won’t be sitting with her.

Alison: You don’t have to. Anyway, I’m heading off to bed. You might as well do the same.

Nina: I should. Good night.

*Alison and Nina go to their respective bedrooms*

The next morning, Alison and her friends are at the town hall where they are going to witness Leon be presented with his bravery medal.

Sylvia: This is so exciting! One of our friends being honoured for their bravery.

Alison: He had a lot of courage helping Dina. That’s for sure.

*Alison, Sylvia, Riggot and Nina all sit together in the back row. A few minutes later, Melissa and Dina arrive.*

Alison: Hey girls.

Melissa: Hi everyone.

Dina: May we sit here?

Nina: Find somewhere else to sit!

Dina: Come on Melissa. Let’s find somewhere else to sit! *glares at Nina before sitting two rows in front of Alison and her friends*

Nina: *muttering* Dog breath.

*A few minutes later, Civic police sergeant Paul Edwards comes onto the stage and speaks to the audience*

Sgt. Edwards: We are here this morning to honour a young boy who saved a local woman from being kidnapped two weeks ago. This boy is well-respected, polite and courageous. Please welcome Leon Longbottom.

*Leon comes up to stage where Sgt. Edwards places the medal onto his shirt before they shake hands. Leon then gives out a speech*

Leon: I’m so happy to have been awarded this medal. I really didn’t expect to be gaining so much attention. I would like to take this time to thank my family, my homie Riggot and to all of my other friends. If I didn’t save Dina, I dread to think what fate she would have suffered. So, thank you.

*The crowd give Leon a round of applause.*

Riggot: *calls out* You deserve it Leon!!!!

Alison: He sure does Riggot. He sure does.

Meanwhile, Alexis is at her house have a girl chat with Catherine, Madison and Hayley.

Madison: Leon should be at his presentation right now.

Hayley: He certainly deserves that medal.

Catherine: So, Alexis. How’s the hangover?

Alexis: Gone. About bloody time too.

Hayley: What were you doing drinking in the first place?

Alexis: Well, I…

Madison: Does drinking alcohol make you look cool?

Alexis: I think I should explain. But you must NOT spread it to anybody.

Catherine: Okay. We promise.

Alexis: I’m an alcoholic.

*Madison and Hayley gasp*

Hayley: No!

Catherine: You’re nearly 14 Alexis. How long have you been drinking for?

Alexis: Since I turned 13.

Madison: My god Alexis! Are you a drug addict too?

Alexis: OF COURSE NOT!!!!

Madison: Good. As long as you don’t do drugs! I’m anti-drugs.

Alexis: I’ve never taken drugs in my life Madison! That’s another reason for my dislike of bloody Todd!

Hayley: He was a drug addict?

Alexis: Still is. He smokes weed.

Catherine: You’re kidding!

Alexis: The hell I’m not. But promise you won’t tell anyone else. I would like to tell them myself.

Hayley: Okay. We promise.

That afternoon, Amy goes over to Melissa’s house. She has a new voice recorder that she wants to show off. Instead, Mrs Powell answers the door.

Mrs Powell: Hello.

Amy: Hi. Is Melissa home?

Mrs Powell: Nah. She’s gone out. Come in.

*Amy walks inside and sit down in the living room. She instantly hits the record button.*

Mrs Powell: I’m just glad I got rid of that Nina trollop. I can’t believe that her dim-witted sister and Melissa fell for my trick.

Amy: What trick was that?

Mrs Powell: I pretended that Nina hit me so that Melissa would kick her out.

Amy: Okay.

Mrs Powell: Her sister is unwed and pregnant for starters. I think Melissa’s friends are all loopy.

Amy: Loopy?

Mrs Powell: Anti-social, noisy and disrespect the elderly if you know what I mean.

Amy: If Melissa comes home, tell her that I dropped by.

Mrs Powell: I will dahling! Bye-bye. *leads Amy out of the door before closing it*

*Amy stops the voice recorder*

Amy: I’ve got you now old woman.

The next day (Sunday), Melissa and Dina are at Amy’s house having a conversation.

Amy: I bought this really cool voice recorder today. Do you want to hear it?

Dina: Sure.

*Amy presses the play button on her voice recorder to hear the conversation between her and Mrs Powell the day before*

Mrs Powell: I’m just glad I got rid of that Nina trollop. I can’t believe that her dim-witted sister and Melissa fell for my trick.

Amy: What trick was that?

Mrs Powell: I pretended that Nina hit me so that Melissa would kick her out.

Amy: Okay.

Mrs Powell: Her sister is unwed and pregnant for starters. I think Melissa’s friends are all loopy.

Mrs Powell: Anti-social, noisy and disrespect the elderly if you know what I mean.

*Amy stops the voice recorder*

Melissa: That conniving little witch!

Dina: Is this true Amy?

Amy: Yes. I knew something wasn’t right so I had to get some evidence.

Melissa: May I borrow that voice recorder?

Amy: Of course.

Melissa: I really appreciate your help Amy. We owe Nina an apology.

Dina: Yes, we do. But will she forgive us?

Meanwhile, Alison is going through the classifieds looking for some part-time work.

Alison: Where do you think I should work Kat?

Kat: It’s your choice Ali.

Alison: None of these jobs are good. They need someone with experience.

Kat: How about if I help you find a job? My Nan owns this cake shop at Darling Harbour and she’s hiring staff at the moment.

Alison: Tell her to give me a call some time this week.

Kat: I’ll do that. By the way, we have to study for our exams in two weeks AND help out with the disadvantaged students. How can we do it all in one week?

Alison: I’m sure Mrs Maddigan will give us a break.

Kat: I hope so too.

When Melissa and Dina arrive home, they immediately confront Mrs Powell.

Melissa: How could you do this to us?

Mrs Powell: She was in the bloody way all the time!

Dina: MY sister wasn’t in the way! You were annoying her with your snobby behaviour!

Melissa: And to think that I felt sorry for you? You have never liked any of my friends and you wonder why they never wanted to come to my house. I always had to go to theirs!

Mrs Powell: Stop your bloody whinging Melissa! You’re just like your father!

Melissa: What did you say?!?

Mrs Powell: You heard me!!

Melissa: OH, THAT IS IT!!!! YOU ARE A CONNIVING B**** AND NOT TO MENTION MANIPULATIVE!!! AND RIGHT NOW, YOU CAN GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!!!!!

Mrs Powell: That’s right! Throw your mother out!

Dina: YOU GOT WHAT YOU DESERVED YOU OLD CROW!!!

Melissa: Get your things and leave. I don’t want nothing to do with you anymore. YOU CAN LIVE ON THE STREETS FOR ALL I CARE!!!!

*Mrs Powell storms upstairs*

After Mrs Powell has left, Melissa and Dina immediately go over to Alison’s house to speak to Nina.

*Nina opens the front door to see Dina and Melissa standing there*

Nina: Oh, no!

Dina: Nina we have to talk.

Nina: Leave me alone!

Melissa: Please hear us out.

Nina: I heard what you have to say.

Melissa: You don’t understand. We know that you didn’t hit my mother.

Dina: We can’t tell you how we found out but we did and I’m really, really sorry for ever doubting you.

Melissa: That goes double for me.

*Nina just shakes her head in disbelief*

Nina: I really cannot believe you two. I begged and begged you to believe me and you wouldn’t. And now you come over here and say everything’s okay because you found out. YOU FOUND OUT!!! Well, that’s just too bad! *to Dina* Do you remember what you said to me before you found out?

Dina: Nina please…

Nina: DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT YOU SAID?!? DO YOU?!?

Melissa: She was upset sweetheart. It was the heat of the moment. Can’t you put it behind you?

Nina: *ignoring Melissa* You said ‘I have no sister’. Well, guess what? It works both ways because as far as I’m concerned MY SISTER IS DEAD!

*Nina storms off while Dina and Melissa remain standing in Alison’s living room with hurt and sadness*

Later that evening, Brock and Jenny get ready for bed.

Brock: I really appreciate you being here for me.

Jenny: You’re welcome. I think this is going to be the best two weeks of our lives. *kisses him*

*Brock takes off his shirt and returns to kissing Jenny who now takes off her blouse.*

Jenny: I love you.

Brock: I love you too. *kisses Jenny again*

*A few hours later, Jenny and Brock are in bed cuddling*

Brock: Wow! That was very nice!

Jenny: I know. *gives Brock a passionate kiss*

Brock: Listen. I have to tell you something.

Jenny: What?

Brock: I really want us to have a baby.

Jenny: I can’t.

Brock: Why not?

Jenny: Because the doctor said I can’t have children.

Sorry, I thought I'd commented on the previous chapter.Loved Amy tricking Mrs.Powell and glad she got her just desserts.I can understand why Nina wouldn't immediately forgive Melissa and Dina though.Surprised Alexis was so matter of fact about being an alcoholic, hopefully she'll be all right.

Episode 35

SIDE NOTE: It is now May 1989

At 5 o’clock the next morning, Dina and Melissa are in their living room drinking chocolate milk when the front door knocks.

Dina: I wonder who that could be so early in the morning? *opens the door to find Sylvia standing there*

Sylvia: Hey. Sorry to come visit so late but I just wanted to tell you something.

Dina: That’s all right Sylvia. We didn’t get much sleep ourselves.

Sylvia: I just heard from Amy that you have finally decided to make amends with Nina. Isn’t that wonderful?

Melissa: Well, you can put your hopes on hold Sylvia because she doesn’t want to know us anymore.

Dina: I can’t say I don’t blame her. She even said that I was dead.

Sylvia: Give her time. I’m sure she’ll come around.

Melissa: I guess you’re right.

Sylvia: Do you have anymore chocolate milk?

Dina: Just help yourself.

*Sylvia gets a glass and pours the chocolate milk into it*

Sylvia: At least we have each other.

Dina: We do. But I just want Nina back. *starts to cry*

Later that morning at TAFE, Lolly is just about to start the class when Mrs Maddigan arrives with a new student.

Mrs Maddigan: I would like to welcome your newest class member. Her name is Vicki Adams.

Erin: *to Alison* I don’t believe it.

Alison: What?

Erin: That’s the woman who burnt my cat to death.

Alison: Is that her?

Erin: Bitch!

*Vicki walks over to where Erin, Alison and their friends are sitting*

Vicki: Well, well, well. If it isn’t Erin!

Erin: P*** off.

Vicki: Not very friendly. *laughs smugly*

Alison: Do you expect her to be friendly after what you did to her cat?

Vicki: Well, no. But I was just trying to be nice.

Melissa: Just get out of our faces. We don’t want you near us.

Vicki: Suit yourselves. *giggles before leaving*

Sylvia: Aren’t you meant to be at the learning disability program Ali?

Alison: No. They’ve rescheduled for this afternoon because of some meeting. But it’s back to normal on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Jenny is at the doctors having a check-up.

Jenny: This morning when I went to the loo, I noticed that my vagina was a purplish colour. And recently, I have been urinating a lot more than I should have. Is that a sign?

Doctor: How about you take a urine test?

Jenny: That’s fine.

*One hour later…*

Doctor: Well, Miss Peters. I have some very exciting news for you. You’re two months pregnant.

Jenny: What?!? Are you positive?

*The doctor nods his head*

Jenny: I always thought I could never have children. This is a miracle!!!

Doctor: Come see me on Thursday for an ultrasound.

Jenny: Okay. Make that 12 o’clock.

Doctor: All right. Good luck.

*Jenny walks out of the surgery*

When Alison gets home from TAFE, she goes up to the spare room to find Nina pulling out photos from a photo album.

Alison: Hey Nina. What are you doing?

Nina: Getting rid of bad rubbish. How was TAFE?

Alison: It was good. Except we got a new student who burned Erin’s cat a few years ago.

Nina: That’s awful. It really is. Do you have any scissors?

Alison: What do you need scissors for?

Nina: To cut out Dina and Melissa’s heads from these photos.

Alison: I think its time you and I had a little talk.

Nina: About what?

Alison: Don’t you think you’re being a bit overboard with this fight?

Nina: Overboard? No. I’m just moving on with my life.

Alison: Your sister loves you Nina.

Nina: My sister is dead.

*Alison gasps in shock*

Nina: That’s right Alison. She doesn’t want to be my sister anymore, that’s fine by me. I’ll just tell people that she died in a car accident two years ago!
