defying_gravity Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 Wow...I'm heaps disappointed...I was positive that Lisa Gormely would have gotten a nom for most popular new talent. And I thought Esther would have been in with a shot for silver. But there are so many randoms nominated...like Chrissy Swan??? I guess I'll be hoping that Jessica Marais wins gold and silver then!
b2sb09 Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 Wow, compared to the number of nominations Home and Away had last year, that's a pretty dismal performance. Maybe that's a reflection on how bad last years storylines actually were. Not even Home and Aways regularly nominated cast members got a look in. Am I the only person on the planet who doesn't understand why Packed to the Rafters is so great. I've many a time, mostly out of curiosity and have found nothing fantastic about it. Yet it seems to go down a stormer in Oz. I liked the first season, but half way through the second I gave up because the characters just really started to annoy me. No one in my family watches it any more. I think this is the first year in a long time where some of the more talented actors actually got nominated in the popular categories ahead of the usual soapie ones. But I have a serious vendetta against award shows such as this that allow the public to pick the nominees, because it does turn into a popularity contest rather than a show that hands out awards to deserving people for either fantastic acting, or creating a well crafted show. I think they should be done like the Oscars, where a society of people who know what they're talking about or know what to look for, nominate the people and shows rather than putting it in the hands of people who may only vote because they think somebody is really good looking or something shallow like that. I don't mean to take away from the nominees I'm just saying I don't reeally trust award shows like this to pick the right people or shows. I hate any show which allows the public to pick, because it seems to become more about popularity and not talent. The best singers don't always win XFactor or Idol. The Logies are nothing more than a popularity contest which is why the word popular is in each category. The only awards that really mean anything for acting, are the outstanding awards because they're not voted for by the public but by their peers I don't know why h&a has so little this year but I'm really happy that Dex has one! I really wanted Lisa Gormley up there too. Am confused as to why Chrissy Swan is voted for Gold Logie? also that karl shouldn't be nominated for gold either. But I am happy for the Offspring cast! The Gold is for Most Popular Personality so I can understand Chrissie being nominated as she's larger than life and I quite like her; she's not afraid to say what she thinks and she's got this fun, bubbly, easy-going manner, but Karl Snoozanovic is so boring he almost makes me crawl back into bed. He actually makes me prefer Kochie in the morning which makes me dislike Karl even more. I think it will go to Rebecca or Jessica anyway.

I'm a little bit surprised that H&A didn't get more nominations, particularly in the New Male/Female categories. But I guess it kind of shows how people are more interested (maybe) in watching hour-long dramas as opposed to half-an-hour every night. That, and in the past year I don't think many stand-out characters have started on H&A to warrant a nomination. Next year, you can probably expect the River Boys to get nominated for something, just because of the hype that was surrounding their entrance.

But I think the actual winner is picked by industry insiders or something? Just to clarify - the "most popular" awards are voted by the public and the "outstanding" awards are voted by the industry. Other than the Gold logie the winners have been decided. The nominees are the top vote getters with the winner announced on the night.

While I understand entirely where you're coming from and, to an extent, agree with you, the Logies are essentially just that - a popularity contest. "Most popular actor" and "Most popular actress" suggests so. For the majority of the public, popularity for them is derived from how good-looking you are and not necessarily how well you act. If Logies nominations were to be decided based on actual talent, then Lisa Gormley would have been nominated.
Zetti Posted April 5, 2011 Report Posted April 5, 2011 Personally I don't think it matters about the Logies because as long as the fans carry on watching and supporting H&A, thats all that really counts, not like Nathan said, a popularity contest.
