TWENTY-NINE

PAUL & HEATH’S STORY

Paul opened his eyes to find himself in a strange darkened living room. He could hear the sound of running water, the sound of a man snoring, and he could faintly hear the sound of the beach. He began to sit up on the lounge he was laying down on but it hurt him to do so, actually it hurt quite a bit. He sat up and looked towards the kitchen and saw Casey, rinsing out a glass, standing there shirtless and beautiful, the sunrise illuminating from the window behind him making him halfway towards a silhouette. But the visual didn’t stay beautiful; it began to turn blurry and the room spun around Paul superfast.

“What’s going on? What am I doing here?” Paul asked Casey.

Casey looked at Paul and shrugged.

Paul stood up and stepped towards Casey but then felt light headed and collapsed onto the other lounge- onto a body.

“Oi! Beat It!”

Paul felt a kick from beneath him and before he knew it he was on the floor. He looked up on the lounge to see Heath Braxton turning away from him and falling back asleep.

“You ok?” Casey asked stepping towards him.

“Just fine!” Paul responded as the two Casey’s stepped above him and they both offered out their hands to help him up.

“Did you have a bit to drink last night?” Casey asked as he helped to stand the hunky teen up.

“Uhh…” Paul tried to think. “…I can’t remember last night.”

“What? At all?”

Paul shook his head.

“Is that because of the bump on your head?”

Paul shrugged, Casey took his arm and dragged him into the bathroom where Paul looked at himselves in the mirror.

“What the…?” Paul stammered before inspecting his faces.

“Someone used you as a punching bag!” Casey commented.

“You’re not wrong.” Paul said as he gently rubbed the purple hill surrounding his eye and cheek.

“So you really can’t remember last night?”

Paul shook his head but then again felt light headed, not wanting to lose his footing he gripped on to the bathroom counter only collapsing his head into the sink as he vomited.

Casey, disgusted, turned away from him. “Not use to drinking?”

“Not use to carbs at all.” Paul quipped before turning the tap on to wash the chunks down the sink.

Casey laughed before giving Paul a soft pat on the back.

As Paul scrubbed down the sink he noticed his knuckles on both hands were bruised much more then he was use to seeing them. Then a flash went through his mind, a memory from the night before, a man in his mid twenties standing in front of him, both fists clenched and then Paul’s fists connecting with his face. THUD! THUD! Paul turned to look at Casey.

“What’s up?”

“I got court tomorrow.” Paul showed Casey his fists. “I can’t go like this.”

Paul then had another flashback from the night before, he was standing in a ring, not a boxing ring, he was in the middle of a ring of men, shouting, yelling at him, stubbies in one hand, and rolls of cash in the other. They were betting on him or against him.

“Your hands are the size of a foot.” Casey laughed at the teen.

“You’re not helping.”

Casey stormed out of the bathroom and back into the living room. Paul followed. Casey ripped the blanket off of Heath and pushed into him. Heath jumped off of the lounge quickly and arced up.

“What?”

“Look at Paul!”

“Who?”

Casey pointed at the battered and bruised teen, Heath looked at Paul and laughed.

“I didn’t do that!”

“What the **** happened last night?” Casey stood up to his older brother.

“Relax…” Heath smiled. “…He’ll tell you, we just had a lot of fun.”

Another flash went through Paul’s mind this time he remembered sitting on the back of Heath’s ute with Heath and a couple of the River Boy’s, laughing, joking and drinking beer. He even remembered seeing his bruised knuckles, this was obviously some time after the fight or was that fights?

“He’s got to go to court tomorrow.” Casey confessed to Heath.

“Tomorrow?” Heath’s smile quickly faded. “Dude? Why didn’t you tell me?”

Paul shrugged.

“Oi…” Heath looked to Casey. “…**** off back to bed.”

Casey looked at Heath and then back at Paul who shrugged, he then disappeared into his bedroom.

“Dude…” Heath walked up to Paul and rubbed his shoulder. “…I’m really sorry.”

“I can’t exactly remember what happened last night.”

Heath dug into his pocket and pulled out his wallet, with a smile on his face he opened it and showed Paul what looked like thousands of dollars inside of it. “You ****ing won me a lot of ****ing cash.”

“I don’t feel like I ****ing won.”

Heath took out about a quarter of the fifty-dollar notes he had in his wallet and handed it to Paul. Paul hesitated taking it. “You ****ing earned it Junior.”

“Why do I look like this if I have won?” Paul pointed out his face to the sexy River Boy.

Heath shrugged. “You couldn’t have blocked every punch thrown at you now could you?”

“What am I going to do about tomorrow?” Paul put the money in his pocket and collapsed onto the lounge. “Can’t exactly bribe my way out of Juvie.”

IRENE, BIANCA & APRIL’S STORY

Bianca opened the back door of the Beach house, still dressed in yesterday’s clothes. She shut the door behind her.

“Paul?” Irene popped her head up from the lounge looking terribly out of sorts.

“Just me Irene.” Bianca whispered unable to hide her smile.

Irene, also still dressed in yesterday’s clothing stood up. “I take it things went well with Liam?”

“Oh Irene…” Bianca spoke unaware that she was dancing merrily like a school girl. “...Last night- all we did was hold each other and talk all night but it was oh so nice.”

Irene forced a smile for her.

“What’s going on here?” Bianca asked concerned.

“Paul didn’t come home last night.”

“Are you serious?” Bianca’s smile faded. “Have you tried calling him?”

“I would have love but he doesn’t have a phone.”

“So you stayed out here all night?”

“Well I went for a drive, looked around for a bit.”

Bianca walked towards April’s bedroom door. “Did you ask April?”

“She didn’t come in until late last night but the last time she saw him he was at the Surf Club talking to Heath Braxton.”

“Heath Braxton?” Bianca needed clarification.

Irene shrugged. “Went by the Braxton’s house at about midnight, Mrs. Braxton wasn’t exactly thrilled that I had woken her up. Told me that if Paul was with Heath that he would be safe and then slammed the door in my face. Somehow though she didn’t exactly ease my worry.”

“Um…” Bianca went to say something but then hesitated.

“What is it love?”

“I’m not sure if I should say something but I had a talk with Paul yesterday, he’s not doing real well at all…”

Irene sighed. “I know, Gina said something about a fight with Dexter?”

“It’s not just that…” Bianca slowed down her speech thinking about the words she chose to use very carefully. “…He um told me about what happened to him when he was little. All these things that are going on with him right now Irene, he needs help. Real help.”

“Right now I’m more worried about keeping him from being locked up. The solicitor told me any sob story or anything messed up that’s going on right now, would just look like reasons for assaulting his stepfather, I refuse to go down that path. He didn’t do it.”

“That’s just it Irene, He is so messed up right now. What if he did?” Bianca could see Irene’s nostrils flaring and decided to explain her feelings more tactfully. “I’ve seen it for myself Irene, one second he’s smiling the next he has a fist in a wall or a table or Dexter Walker’s face.” Maybe it wasn’t so tactful, Irene turned away from her. “I sympathise with him Irene, I actually like the kid, but he scares me.”

Irene still faced away from Bianca wipes a tear from her eye. “He scares me as well love.”

Bianca rubbed Irene’s shoulder. “I’ll wake April up, see if she knows anything else.”

Bianca walked back over to April’s bedroom door and opened it, looking shocked at what she could see inside it, she walked back into the lounge room. “Irene, I’ve just found Paul.”

Irene and Bianca walked over to the entrance of April’s room where they could see April laying down on her single bed although the sheet was covering her it was pretty obvious to both Irene and Bianca that she was naked. They saw the boy’s arm around her but his head was covered up.

Bianca knocked to get their attention, April moved around not waking up but the boy removed the blanket from his face and looked up at Bianca and Irene.

Xavier, who was extremely embarrassed, smiled at Irene and Bianca. “Hi?”

April then awoke, she looked up at Irene and Bianca and then turned to see Xavier, and she then buried her head into her pillow.
