With apologies for the long hiatus. We are now back to normal. Maybe. Well anyway, here's an update. There are 9 more chapters to come. Enjoy.

Chapter Fifteen:

“Tell me again why you’ve sent Xavier off to see this Miranda person?” April asked, her snooty tone matching her folded arms and the glare on her face as she looked over at him.

Dex sighed like for the millionth time and look back at April. April. April. In his mind her name echoed like some soppy voiceover man was saying it. He glanced at her, his pale features suffusing with colour as he felt a wave of love going through him. She was so totally perfect. The way her hair curled just slightly, her sparkling eyes, and of course her amazing mental prowess. She was his perfect girlfriend with only one small problem. April was going out with Xavier, his best friend.

“Miranda has access to the library at the university. I need Xavier to look up certain things for me.”

“So you’ve sent my boyfriend off with another woman?” April shrieked.

Once again Dex frowned and calculated the formula between a woman being upset and the register of their voices when they spoke. He’d worked it out long ago from hearing his parents arguing and knew with assuredly that with the pitch level that April had just displayed that she was severely upset.

“April, we needed the information,” he said logically. “Ergo, Xavier is seeking said knowledge,” he added a minuscule wrinkle appearing at the top of his nose as his attention resumed on the laptop in front of him and he frowned at the screen.

“Will you pay attention to me?” April shrieked once more stamping her foot.

Dex spun around on his chair forgetting that he was seated at the table in the kitchen and not at his desk in the bedroom. The difference you ask, Dex thought, is that with being seated at the kitchen table you are using a chair that doesn’t swivel, turn, rotate or other adjectives that describe the circular motion of office style seating and was why he slipped off the other side and landed on his backside next to his chair.

“What..er…what…” Dex muttered lifting a hand to his face and pushing his hair back from his eyes. Time for a haircut, he thought with a frown before recognising the sharp pain that came from landing on his coccyx.

“Get up you fool!” April muttered.

Dex gave her a narrow eyed look. For a perfect princess who had stolen his heart with just a look from her velvet brown eyes she had a temper on her, and she hadn’t even asked him if he were alright. Easing slowly to his feet he stood straight in front of her only slightly wincing as he stretched out the muscles in his lower back that had been jarred by the impact.

“Xavier is fully aware of what he is doing April, and I must say he was quite right to leave you out of the loop. Look at the overreaction you are presenting me with now. We needed the access to the University library and since not one of us actually is a university student we had to access it somehow,” he pointed out using all the logic he could muster.

Part of him wanted to sit back down and continue his research. Part of him wanted to go and lay down until his back stop hurting and the remaining third of him wanted April to look at him with the kind of look she gave her boyfriend and tell him that she loved him instead.

Coming back from his momentary daydream he looked over at April and tried to work out if she’d said something whilst he’d been dreaming. The look she gave him indicated not and he breathed a slow sigh of relief.

“I’m sorry, he’s doing a good thing, I guess,” April said eventually.

“He is, and you know of course that he is only doing it for you don’t you?”

Dex eased over to the fridge and took out the orange juice although he knew that it was a move towards potential disaster. Taking a drink whilst April was in the room could lead to total chaos. For one, he could find something funny that no one else did, he was often quite capable of that, and end up snorting it or more embarrassing spitting it out and two, spilling it in his lap.

“Yeah I get that, but how romantic does it actually sound when I say my boyfriend is off flirting with another woman for me?”

Dexter Walkers immediate thoughts made it impossible for him to pour the juice into two glasses and severely compromised his entire thought process with the images it was putting inside his cerebral cortex. Xavier interviewing women on April’s behalf, like his beautiful Princess was suddenly a … he refused to finish the sentence and focused instead on pouring out the juice.

“Here,” he murmured handing over the glass to her. He, of course, noticed their fingers touching and tried not to interpret that as a sign.

“Thank you,” April said politely.

Dex nodded once and pointed to the sofa the other side of the room and he followed her over to it sitting next to her. Close enough to smell the floral perfume but not too close. He noticed they each took a drink of the juice before placing the glass on the low table in front of them at the same time. He could have put it down to co-incidence but they also sighed at the same time and turned and looked at each other. Whatever rational thought was inside his head at that moment seemed to leak out of his ears as he leaned closer to her just as she leaned into him. Their lips hovered within millimetres of each other just as the front door crashed open to admit Indi and Romeo.

“For the last time, Ruby means nothing to me, nothing!”

“Then you shouldn’t have kissed her or slept with her…” Indi said scathingly as she stalked into the lounge.

“Do you think if I had feelings for her then maybe, just maybe, I wouldn’t have married you?” Romeo shouted back.

“Hello, people in the room…” Dex muttered feeling put out that his perfect moment with April had come and then just as easily gone. Would he ever get a chance like that again?

“Er actually, I’m just going to go.. “ April said standing up hurriedly and smoothing down her skirt and before Dex could say anything she’d walked out of the house and was gone.

He stood up and glared at the still arguing couple.

“Right that’s it!” he cried out.

“What?” Indi shouted at him barely taking her furious glance off Romeo.

“Out, the pair of you. Go on get,” Dex said moving over to the them and with a strength he rarely displayed he seized hold of both of their arms and yanked on them. Indi cried out and Romeo looked at him with a sneer on his face, not moving at all. “Take this argument and your musclebound hulk of a husband and go elsewhere! The rest of us do not need to put up with you two arguing all the time!” Dex shouted.

Perhaps it was the earnest look on his face or the way he’d raised his voice but the two people in front of him began to move away and out of the door. He followed them at a slower pace. “And don’t come back until you’ve sorted things out!” He added and slammed the door on them.

Satisfied he was alone he leaned against the closed door and sighed before banging his head softly against it. Why wasn’t his life simpler, he wondered and groaned aloud.

Oh, why does every fic that starts off with Xavier/April seem to end up turning into Dexter/April?Sorry, shipping rant over. Some interesting character dynamics and some funny bits with Dex, looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Chapter Sixteen

The bus stank of stale urine and cheap alcohol but that was nothing new for Roman. Prison had made him so used to it that it physically did not bother him, he could spend hours on the bus and it would feel like the place he'd just been rescued from. He had to carry on running, it was no sort of life but it was better than being stuck inside. Prison was not a place where he wanted to be. It was a hellhole and he was not going to go back, he was going to fight to stay out. He had to fight. He got off the bus and looked around, his hoodie disguised him and he looked a lot older than he had been when he first went into prison but still he had to be cautious. He spotted the beach, the sun had not risen yet, he knew it was a risk but he had to go there for a look before he dealt with the upcoming crisis. There was nothing like the feel of the sand below his feet, the dawn had barely started. Roman was stood on the beach watching the sunrise and feeling a tinge of sadness. He had missed out on so much from feeling the guilt of his former actions but now he was out and he had a task to do. That was why Aden and Nic had risked everything to bring him back.

Focus Roman! He berated himself as his internal musings dragged his attention away from the task he was there for.

You have a job to do he muttered to himself as he turned away from the foaming sea and walked up from the beach to the stretch of road at the top.

After all he was destined to go back on the run but first he had to sort out the issues within the bay. Nicole was relying on him. She was a parent now and he knew that she needed peace of mind so she could look after his grandson. He needed to figure what was going on but first he wanted two things he never got inside sleep and good food. He made his way along the road heading in the general direction of the Surf Club and looked around; the Bay was a sight for sore eyes but enough reminiscing. It was time to focus. He had a future to forge but right now he was going to focus on sorting out the chaos that had enveloped the Bay.

Something told Roman to survey his surroundings and he spotted a man who seemed to be covered in tattoos looking shifty. He knew that look; he had sported that look on a lot of occasions, especially inside. As soon as he started making his way towards the tattooed man, he also spotted Charlie in her police uniform and a weird uneasy feeling fell upon him. He sighed; his sleep and food would have to wait, it seemed he had to get started straightaway.

He set off in pursuit of Charlie who was on her own and walking towards what seemed to be a derelict warehouse, which just screamed out trouble. He saw Charlie look around and then shake her head. He glanced over at the car and saw the tattooed man walk away from it. He automatically knew something was wrong, he could feel it in his bones. He sprinted towards the car. The man was out of sight but Charlie was alert and saw him running towards her. She blinked in disbelief as in she didnt actually believe that he was actually there, she knew he was out but never thought that he would come back to the Bay.

She reached for her gun but she realised that he was running for her car.

"Get down!" he hissed, as she looked him dead in the eye.

"What?"

"Just do it." He hissed yet again as he pulled her to one side, pushing her out of range as far as he could before he peered through the driver's side window and into the car. He saw a box peeking out just under the passenger seat that to the normal civilian eye was perfectly innocent but he knew better. His SAS training kicked in and he checked around the door to make sure it wasn't wired. Opening the handle slowly he waited a heartbeat listening for anything that would indicate he was wrong in his thinking. Breathing out slowly he felt relief go through him as he got the door open. Moving across to the passenger seat he checked to make sure the box was able to be moved so he could look at it better. Again, his training meant that he was able to focus his full attention to the task at hand and after more careful checks he was able to raist the lid on the box. It looked innoculous at first, like two bottles of fizzy pop with handful of wires on top before he located the timer. It told him he had less than three minutes to disarm the bomb.

Charlie was standing next to him now and he shot her a look knowing what she was thinking, warring between her desire to take him in and the desire to know what he was doing. Her desire to arrest him won.

"I have to take you in."

"Not yet."

"Now Roman."

"The bomb needs to be disarmed first."

"Bomb?" she asked genuinely confused.

"Just get away from the car and let me think, just let me think."

"I need to radio it in."

"Wont help."

"Why not?

"There's two minutes before it goes off, now move away from the damn car."

Roman didnt wait to see whether or not she listened, he just looked around the car and tried to see if there was a trigger, something that could be used to disarm the bomb. He looked closely at the wires; there were several different colours, blue, green, yellow and red. He traced the yellow wire back to the car seat where it then disappeared into the seat. Following that he traced the red wire which fed into the timer but his gut instinct was telling him that the red wire was the wrong one to cut but maybe that was just a ruse and he needed to cut that one. He needed to think clearly, which wire was he going to cut? The blue one overlapped the red wire and went into the box just under the timer. He came to the conclusion that the blue one was the most likely wire but he had a time constraint so he had to focus and get on with disarming the bomb. He could see a blue liquid inside but from the smell and box, he realised it was kerosene. It was most likely mixed with liquid nitrogen which made this a dangerous bomb that would have killed Charlie on impact if she had been in the car.

He slowly leant forward and opened the glove box. He saw some scissors, which he grasped, it was not a wire cutter but there was nothing else he could utilise. He pressed himself up against the car seat and breathed. He went forward and placed the scissors against the blue wire, he had to be careful, and he didnt want to risk the bomb going off early. He closed his eyes and used the adrenaline coursing through his body, as soon as he felt the wire snap, he waited for the beep to signal the disarming of the bomb but it never happened. He sighed and then moved his attention to the time, which was at 56 seconds, he suddenly pressed the scissors against the red and prayed for a miracle but it never came, the timer carried on ticking down.

Roman stood up and yanked back away from the car, pulling Charlie away with him from the car as it blew up. Twisted metal flew in all directions with some catching Charlies leg in the explosion but with Roman covering her he took the full brunt of the thermal wave that knocked them to the hard ground.

"Thanks." Charlie responded once she had got her breath back.

"I have to go." Roman said as soon as he got his breath back. "I know you have to report that you saw me but give me a chance. I did save your life."

Charlie couldnt speak after that so she merely nodded, her eyes on the twisted wreckage of her squadcar.

**

"Are you sure?" Ruby asked Charlie yet again when she visited Charlie in hospital later on that day.

"I am fine, apart from the superficial cut on my leg which will heal, I am perfectly fine." Charlie said exasperated.

Casey stood against the door and looked upon the two of them arguing. Charlie noted that Casey was stood by the door but was too busy trying to placate Ruby to notice how shifty he was acting. Ruby however knew Casey was being odd like he had been in the previous few days. She was prepared to write it off until today. Something about Caseys behaviour made alarm bells ring in her head and she didnt like the way her mind went off into suspicious mode. He had warned Brax not to go after Charlie; she was a cop and least likely to let it go. After the recent events, it was just asking for trouble to go after a cop but hey what did he know? He was just the lackey for his brothers. He stepped into the room and decided to try and get some answers; Brax would kill him if he didnt at least try.

"Do you have any ideas how it actually happened?"

"What do you mean?" Charlie asked

I dont know, its weird, the whole thing with Colleen and the collar, and the bomb that killed Leah and Elijah, it cant be a coincidence can it?" Casey asked knowing he was going down a difficult road especially drawing attention to the previous bombs that his brothers had orchestrated.

"Its not a coincidence, that much I can tell you. There is something odd about this one."

"Odd?" Casey was genuinely perplexed.

"Think about it, the other bombs have been to cause specific damage in a public area with the exception of Leah and Elijah but that could have been in a much more public area. So why plant a bomb in my car and set the timer so it goes off in the middle of nowhere?"

Ruby piped in. "They might have just been targeting you."

Casey frowned in a bid to throw them both off the scent. "That is weird and really doesnt make sense."

"Probably were but they made a big mistake." Charlie declared.

Casey couldnt resist asking "What do you mean?"

"Well it was not just innocent victims of Summer Bay these lowlifes have targeted and killed, they were also my friends and neighbours, so I want justice, and I am going to do all I can to get it."

Casey nodded and placed his hands in his jeans in order to divert suspicion from his shaking hands. He had control; he just could not afford to lose it now. He walked out of the room as his phone rang, Ruby looked and then turned to Charlie.

"It is weird though." Ruby started to say.

"Weird how?" Charlie asked.

Well, it did start when the River Boys turned up, it might just be a coincidence

"I dont know, maybe."

Casey walked back in and Charlie smiled.

"Right, you two better go, I am going to get discharged then I have things to do."

"Take it easy." Ruby insisted as Casey pushed her out of the room.

"I will." She said insincerely but aiming to placate Ruby.

"I will check!"

Charlie chuckled as Casey closed the door.

**

Roman watched the sunset and spotted the man from earlier. He looked straight at him but didnt move. He didnt have to; he knew the mans curiosity was going to lead him straight to him.

"Who are you?" Brax demanded.

"Whos asking?"

"You do not need to know that."

"Is that right Darryl?

Roman studied his face waiting for a reaction but he didnt get one.

"Well done, so you know my name, anyone can find that out, it is not a secret."

"Clearly." Roman said unperturbed.

"Who are you?"

"Does it matter?

"Maybe it doesnt, but I am curious."

"Curiosity killed the cat."

Oh is that what happened to the cat? Will have to let my mother know.

Roman stared at him impassively waiting for him to get to the point. It was getting a bit boring now and he wanted to be able to carry on investigating this bomb. He had to protect his family especially Nicole & George.

"Is there a point to this?"

"How do you know Charlie?

"Charlie?"

"The cop."

"She put me in prison, you know how it goes."

"Nope. Never been dumb enough to get caught."

Roman chuckled and Brax looked confused. Roman felt the urge to punch Brax, he didnt know why though. He and Charlie were a thing of the past but if Brax was going to stick around, he had to ensure that no further damage could be inflicted.

"Stay away from Charlie."

"You gonna to make me?"

"If I have to."

I look forward to it." Roman said before he walked away from Brax knowing he was in for a fight but looking forward to it.

Still confused by the way Casey seemed to have been interrogating her mother Ruby knew she needed to talk to someone about it. With Nic being so busy with the baby and with Angelo, she could only think of one person she coulld talk to who would help her make sense of things. Besides he was a guy and if anyone could explain what guys were thinking it was always another guy. She found herself sitting on Xavier's couch drinking orange juice and looking over at him.

"What happened?

She explained quickly about the bomb in Charlie's car. and I was at the hospital visiting Charlie and well Casey was asking so many questions.

"What exactly?"

"Stuff like did she think that the bomb was intended for her and he tried to look concerned but his eyes just kept off letting off fear and I dont know, I feel like hes involved somehow."

Xavier nodded. Hes a River boy, it kind of fits.

"What do I do?"

"Let me tell the rest to come over and fill them in on what happened with your mother and well, we have a few theories that I think you need to hear."

"Fine, you do that. Can I use your bathroom?"

Xavier nodded and started texting Nicole, April and Dex to make their way over. He watched the messages coming back and decided that he should probably get some snacks out. Nic was first to arrive, having the shortest distance to travel before April and finally Dex. Xavier updated them all on what happened and then on Rubys suspicions and they in turn told Ruby what they had found out about the bomb attacks.

"The timing fits. Xavier added. "The River Boys turning up in the Bay and then the attacks starting."

You should spy on him. Nicole put in.

"What?"

"Spy on Casey that is the only way to get some actual answers."

"Really?"

"Yes."

"I am not sure I can do that , he's my boyfriend, it would be odd."

"Come on Ruby!" April insisted. "You are our best hope. Just please do it."

Dex looked at her. "Look we need the answers; we havent started this only to give up now. You can be the next step in the process to get some answers to the questions that we all have. We wouldnt ask if there was another way."

Ruby looked at them all and felt herself getting persuaded but she kept on thinking what if Casey finds out? Were his brothers involved? There was too many variables but she was slowly coming around to the idea that there was something sinister going on.

Too many things but she nodded and they all sighed in relief.

"I will do it. I dont like it but I will do it."

"Thank you." Dex said sincerely and Xavier nodded with relief.

So here is the my chapter of this story

Hope you enjoy it. :)

Chapter 17

The beach was Romeo Smith’s favourite place. The lapping swish of the waves over the golden sand gave him a kind of peace and tranquillity that he needed in his life. The beach was his escape, his place to surf for pleasure or to push him body to the limit. Sometimes when he needed to start training hard for the next competition that he felt he had a chance of winning. Romeo would have said that he loved everything that this glorious beach had to offer. However today he was experiencing something about the beach that he wasn’t overly keen on, and that was the taste of its golden sand as it was kicked violently back into his face, as his outraged girlfriend Indi Walker stomped ahead of him.

Given that Indi’s mood had grown more and more bitter and unpleasant to the point of nearing total meltdown. Since she and her great plank of a boyfriend had been so bluntly ordered out of the house by a rather stressed out looking Dexter, who seemed to have been having a intense moment with April. Romeo still hadn’t learnt to ease back on his pleas for Indi’s forgiveness over his night of passion with Ruby. This resulted in him getting several

mouthfuls of the golden sand. Romeo spat the contents of sand out of his mouth.

“Indi stop look Ruby means nothing to me I swear.”

“Words Romeo just words” Indi replied irritated dropping him a glance over her shoulder before swishing her hair and walking away once again.

“No Indi please just stop.”

“Why should I?” Indi said making sure Romeo would see her giving her long blonde hair a swish through the slightly breezy air. Romeo was then instantly caught up in her beauty, Indi spun round fixing Romeo’s dumbfounded face with an icy glare.

“Well I have stopped so what is it you want to say?”

“Well first off thank you.”

“Thank you for what?”

“I’m not too sure how much more sand I could of stomached, I’m sure I swallowed some you know.”

Indi found herself smiling at this as she glanced at him with his puppy dog eyes. Well that’s what she thought he was doing but Indi couldn’t of been sure. Either Romeo was finding it hard to move his facial muscles or it was the blazing sun shining in her eyes. Indi decided it was the sun and went over to drag Romeo calmly over to sit near the water.

“Am I forgiven?” he asked.

“Not yet Romeo but we are going to try and talk through our issues calmly.”

“Good so we won’t end up murdering each other then?” Romeo asked smiling as he took up Indi’s hand.

“That depends on how many times Ruby’s name comes up while I sit here and demand answers from you.”

Romeo sighed.

“Well I guess I better get started explaining to you about Ruby and me.”

“Yes you better” Indi said while gripping tightly onto her nervous looking boyfriend’s hand.

The blurry vision of the world began to take its focus as the fluttering eyelashes of Charlie Buckton opened. Through her line of sight Charlie could just about make out the rather tasty build of someone dressed in a blue and white checked shirt and a pair of green trousers.

“Well, well look at you sleeping on the job eh. Don’t you know there are some dangerous criminals out there to catch?”

Charlie watched as Brax came round the side of her hospital bed and sat down.

“Yes I was very much aware of that fact thanks, considering someone tried to kill me.”

Charlie wasn’t too sure but she thought she had seen Brax wince slightly at her last statement, but given the fact he had a very nasty looking black eye he might have been suffering from some pain.

“What happened to you? You look like you may have just bumped into some of these so called dangerous criminals.

“Nah just Heath you know its brother stuff nothing to worry about. What’s a few head butts amongst brothers eh?”

“Oh what did you fight about?” Charlie asked looking concerned.

“Oh just stuff you know we just had words.”

Brax jumped to his feet and headed to the door.

“You are going now?” Charlie asked somewhat surprised at Brax’s quick exit.

“Yep just come to check on you.

“Oh well bye then.”

“Yeah bye.”

Brax lingered at the door to Charlie’s hospital room a while longer before he turned to face her once more. Charlie looked up into his eyes, was that the hint of fear she could see in them? Or was it just the result of the painkillers she was having for her battered leg just playing tricks with her mind? A sudden silence suddenly swept the room. The constant beeping from Charlie’s drip droned for a few seconds as Brax’s word made Charlie go tense.

“Stay away from me Charlie and stop playing cop it could get very dangerous for you if you keep it up” Brax then walks out into the hospital corridor.

Casey watched in secret as Brax walked out of the room where Charlie was. He staggered out of his secret hiding place and went straight into Ruby who was making her way carefully to her mother’s room carrying two cups of coffee.

“CASEY WATCH OUT.”

Casey could only watch as both of the coffee cups flew up into the air and showered Ruby on their way back down with lukewarm coffee, which was lucky for Ruby.

“Oh man Rubes I’m so sorry I…”

“Casey look at me, and look at all these doctors and nurses staring at me this is so not a good look for me.”

“Well I think you carry the wet look off very well I…. Hey come on lets go get you dried off.”

“Dried off I need to go and change I……”

“No way a few minutes out in the sun you will be fine.”

“Oh and what do you have in mind Casey a bit of skinny dipping on the beach?”

Casey couldn’t quite work out why but every time he found himself messed up or confused by his brothers’ actions; Ruby always had a way of making him feel better.

‘If you really want us to go skinny dipping who am I to say no?”

The wind had picked up considerably from the light breeze earlier on in the day. The sun’s golden glow had somewhat dulled itself upon the sand, turning it paler. But nevertheless if somebody happened to glance carefully the track of footprints could still just about be seen leading back up the sand. The waves of the sea had also picked up their speed. The beach had a much darker ghostly feel to it now that night drew even closer.

Ruby ran a few yards ahead of Casey turning back every so often to see if he was still following her. He was and to Ruby’s delight Casey had discarded his t-shirt upon the sand, as he ran towards her drawing her ever closer to the sea. Ruby gigged as she kicked off her trainers as Casey advanced upon her. Glancing upon his bare chest Ruby felt sudden feelings of great lust and passion for the hunk that had soaked her in coffee. She soon found herself having wrapped her arms round him and before they both knew it they were soon enough kissing each other. Ruby found it harder than he did having to stand up on her tiptoes to reach him properly. Casey slowly began to lower Ruby to the sand as the confused thoughts of why Brax had been in Charlie’s hospital room all but now washed away. While kissing her neck Casey looked down to Ruby lying beneath him. Casey smiled seeing the look of bliss on her face.

Unknown though to the blissful couple the spot where they had fell upon the sand, was already occupied by another of the bay’s couples. This was where they had both sat to iron out their issues that very afternoon, the main worrying issue that had been worrying them was in fact Ruby. They lay back buried in the sand as if they were both sunbathing when Romeo’s and Indi’s faces became visible with the help of the strong wind coming off the darkening sea.

Ruby turned her head towards her ex while in the bliss of Casey’s arms, opening her eyes for only a split second. The feel of utter terror hit her hard and it didn’t matter how good it was having Casey with her. It couldn’t stop the scream from escaping her lungs.

Casey looked up shocked.

“Rubes I’m no expert but that didn’t sound like a scream of pleasure.”

“Casey it’s……………………..”

“Rubes?”

“Romeo……….Indi…”

“Huh what?”

Ruby screamed again as Romeo’s glazed over dead stare glanced into her eyes. The sand covering Romeo and Indi’s bodies was then swept away with help from a gust of wind

“Oh holy crap” Casey said as he crawled a few paces back.

“They are dead Casey” Ruby moves at speed away from them.

“How the….” Casey then stops as he spots the pale footprints that could be seen leading away from Romeo and Indi.

“Someone must have…….” Casey stops short again.

“Murdered them” Ruby said whilst trembling.

Casey looked to Romeo and Indi lying next to each other, looking peaceful in the sand. There was no sign of a struggle, no blood and no visible clues but for the footprints of their murderer.

Casey just sat back in the sand while the wave of shock washed over him. He could faintly hear Ruby’s screams from somewhere in the distant background.
