Took you long enough Zetti ... we're always meant to comment on each other's chapters ...

Easy to forget seeing as we read them beforehand though.

Thanks for the comment though, of course.

And yes, everyone, it's Zetti's turn ...

Chapter Eight

‘Whoever created paperwork needs to be hung’ Miles muttered under his breath as he filed his paperwork into his duffel bag.

He shoved it near the door so he would remember it when he left the next morning for school, or at least he hoped he would remember. He spent so much time in the morning wrangling the household that he rarely got the chance to get ready as much as he would like to in the morning.

He checked that all the doors was locked and that the house was secure, these days he thought to himself, you never know who could be lurking around.

He walked up the stairs, intensely grateful that it was nearly the end of the week and that he didn’t have to survive much longer till the school holiday.

He was in need of a break and a long vacation would definitely be on the cards, maybe he could go and visit Sally or go back to Thailand. Hell he could even go to England or America, see some sights before returning to his dreary life.

He dragged himself under the covers and threw his shoe at the light switch and for once hit the light, which plunged the room into darkness, not that Miles had noticed that it was eerily dark because snores emanated from the bed.

‘Urgh’ he sleepily murmured as the sun came bouncing through the window. He looked at his alarm clock and groaned, he had no time to try and wake up properly, and he had to get up right now otherwise the household would fall into disarray.

‘Miles!’ Marilyn called out piercing Miles' concentration as he focused on making his way down the stairs without falling over like he did in the mornings.

Miles grimaced as walked into the kitchen.

‘What?’

‘Someone got out of the wrong side of bed this morning’ Elijah noted as he accepted a cup of coffee from Marilyn.

‘I cant talk till I have had my coffee’ Miles responded and took the cup from Elijah before he had the chance to sip it and walked back up the stairs, he was too tired to ponder what he needed to before he went to work, he just needed to wake up.

He was too tired to ponder what he needed to before he went to work, he just needed to wake up.

‘Miles!’ Marilyn shrieked as he jumped and the coffee sloshed all over him. He cursed inwardly as Marilyn walked in. ‘Phone call’

‘Did you have to shout?’ he replied irritably as he handed the cup to Marilyn and took the phone.

‘Sorry’ she said but she didn’t look sorry which just annoyed Miles that little bit more.

‘Thanks’ he said but his tone of voice made Marilyn jump.

‘No need to be so tetchy Miles’ she huffed as she turned on her heels and walked away from him.

‘Hello?’

‘Hello?’ he repeated when he didn’t receive a reply. ‘Hello? If you don’t say anything, then I will just hang up…’ he faltered off hoping that they would say something.

He was not really in the mood to have a conversation with whoever was on the end of the phone line; he couldn’t be bothered to even get ready to deal with a bunch of students.

His bed suddenly looked so inviting but he breathed in and sighed.

‘Time to get on with things’

He got himself washed and dressed in record time. Normally he would spend a while sorting his hair out and getting himself ready but he had no time due to the stupid phone call.

‘I do wonder who it was’ he said to himself as he put his shoes on and made his way down the stairs to the kitchen.

‘Miles’ Gina called ‘What are you doing?’

‘My job’ he said ‘unless you’re going to sack me?’

‘Funny’ she said but her face showed no sign of humour ‘Staff meeting remember?’

‘Oh yes, be right there’

‘We have a new member of staff…’

‘Got it, best behaviour’

Miles made his way to the staffroom and then realised that he still looked like he had just got out of bed so he made his way quickly to the staff toilets which was situated in a corridor just off the side of the staffroom. He got out the gel from his bag and looked at it. He unscrewed the lid and was humming away to himself, which consequently meant that he had not seen the liquid bubble slightly as the cold air hit the surface of the gel. He slowly put some gel on his hands and rubbed it into his hair, as his hair was already slightly greasy, it counteracted the bubbles of the gel.

As a result, it meant that he didn’t notice the effects of the gel as he surveyed himself in the mirror and once he was satisfied with how he looked, he put the gel back in his bag & made his way towards the staffroom.

‘Glad you could join us’ Gina commented as Miles sat down.

‘Glad to be here’ Miles said sarcastically earning a glare from Gina and a few sniggers from the staff which subsided as soon as Gina cleared her throat.

‘Right lets get on with the meeting, can’t keep the students waiting much longer’

Miles found the meeting very mundane but he didn’t say anything as his hair was beginning to feel quite itchy and rough.

He put his hand on his hair and realised that he was attracting attention but at this point, the meeting had ended.

‘Miles.’

‘Gina’

‘See me in my office after school’ Miles nodded as she left the staffroom, he had year 11’s first lesson but he needed to deal with his hair first so he quickly made a detour to the bathroom and saw that his hair looked okay but just felt odd.

It makes no sense, why would it feel odd but look okay?

Miles picked up the gel and looked at it, upon close inspection, he saw the colours of the gel mutating and it was turning white instead of its usual blue colour.

He had no time to mull it over but decided he needed to ask someone what it meant. He washed the gel off and finger combed his hair as best as he could.

As soon as he did, he was curious and so he tentatively reopened the gel and saw to his amazement that it had begun to bubble viciously, he had not idea what he was supposed to do.

Think Miles, think! Right, lets just do the lesson and then I can go and see some science magician and figure it out.

However throughout his lesson, his eyes kept getting drawn towards his bag and he couldn’t help but be concerned that he was harbouring a secret that could not just affect the people he cared about.

It couldn’t be a coincidence that something had happened to him at the same while Roo had died due to ‘suspicious’ circumstances.

‘Sir?’

‘Sorry? What?’

‘The bell went about 10 minutes ago. I just came to get my folder’ he said as he tapped it and Miles nodded.

‘Okay thankyou’ he said as he dismissed him and made his way out of the classroom as he grabbed his things, he needed to find out exactly what was going on otherwise he was going to go mad.

‘Mr. Small’ Miles called as he walked into the science lab.

‘Mr. Copeland’

‘This might sound bizarre’ Miles started, as he looked at Mr. Small ‘I have a strange feeling that my gel is harbouring some chemical reaction?’

‘Chemical reaction? What?’

‘Let me show you’ Miles suggested and made his way to the workbench once he had nodded his assent.

He got a tile from the edge and poured the gel onto it. It instantly corroded the tile and they both jumped away in shock. Mr Small grabbed the gel and placed it in the protective chamber on the other side of the classroom.

‘What the hell?’ Miles said in hushed tones.

‘That was a chemical bomb’

Miles’s eyes widened and he grasped onto the end of the table in shock. ‘What?’

‘Yes and it looks like it is in the early stages of the combustion process.’

‘Combustion? What?’

‘Oh okay, doesn’t matter’ Mr Small replied clearly realising that that Miles wouldn’t get a word that he was saying, he wasn’t a science teacher which is probably why he was targeted. An English teacher would never be able to understand the chemical reaction and how it was very acidic.

‘So what do we do?’

‘We?’ Mr. Small raised his eyebrows ‘What makes you think I am getting involved?’

‘Cos its in your classroom’ Miles put in crossing his arms across his chest and staring him down.

‘Mr Small’

‘Cut the formalities, Its Sean’

‘Sean, I need your help, I need it, not just for me but the school, and we cannot just leave a chemical bomb there ready to erupt’

‘Explode’

‘Fine explode’ he replied exasperated, he wasn’t bothered about the formal words, he just needed to get this into Sean’s’ head, he needed help.

‘I don’t feel comfortable doing this’

‘We have to’ he repeated

‘Okay’

Miles sighed a breath of relief. ‘So what is the first step?’

‘Evacuate the school’

‘Er why? Its only a small jar, it cant cause that much damage can…’ he faded off as he saw Seans’ expression

‘Seriously?’

‘It is a chemical bomb, you don’t need the same amount as a normal bomb to make such a big impact’

‘Wow’ Miles said suddenly realizing that if he hadn’t had told Sean, then the destruction of the school and the lost lives that were bound to follow, would have been his fault, he wasn’t sure he could deal with that on his conscience.

‘Okay I will get that sorted, can you do deactivate the bomb alone?’

‘No, I need Dexter Walker’

‘Okay, then I will get him’

**

‘The acidic nature of the bomb is very high so I need help to adminster the alkaline’

Dex frowned; he couldn’t believe that he was actually helping to neutralize a bomb, a bomb, in Summer Bay, this small coastal town. He was actually defusing it, what a story to tell his grandkids.

‘Dex?’

‘Sorry, got it. So now?’

‘No in 13 years time’ he replied sarcastically

‘Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit’ he answered as he lowered the alkaline slowly into the acidic gel which made no instant effect but Dex wasn’t worried, he had known it would happen, he just added more and really wanted to hit Miles who was pacing around behind him. If anything put him off, then all three of them would never see light of day and he quite fancied growing old with his sarcasm and his blog.

‘Just get on with it’ Miles gritted.

‘Perfection takes time.’

‘We don’t have time’

‘Well then lets just let it explode’ Sean replied’

‘Shut up!’ Dex said ‘Seriously I thought I was supposed to be the kid’

‘You are’

‘Just let me get on with it’

Miles nodded and walked away far enough so he could still see what Dex was doing but close enough to still annoy Dex but he put that to the back of his mind and concentrated.

‘That’s it’ he announced a few moments later as the gel stopped bubbling.

‘What?’

‘Yep'

Dex was determined to prove it so he grabbed Miles’s and smeared a small portion of the gel onto it’

‘See?’

Miles nodded and then rubbed the gel off, he didn’t want to leave it on his hands any longer than necessary.

‘Wow. So its defused’

‘Yep, now I am going to go and join the rest of my fellow students and enjoy the next few hours of no lessons…’

Miles sighed, ‘Thank God its over’

‘Its not’ Sean pointed out.

‘No?’

‘No’ he confirmed. ‘You still need to find out why you got the bomb and who targeted you’

‘The police then’

‘Yep’

‘Have fun’ Sean said as he packed his bag ‘I for one, intend to catch up on my sleep’

Miles groaned, the ordeal hadnt ended, it was just beginning.

The beginning of the end?
