(I have to be honest.... I employed a ghost writer for this chapter. Credit goes to <cough> them if you like it.. if you hate it I'm going to have to have them punished....)

Chapter Nine

‘So you have no idea where the gel was contaminated with the bomb’ Charlie pressed Miles for an answer and what must have been the tenth time in that hour alone.

‘No, as I have said for the past three hours,’ signaling his annoyance to Charlie again who had finally realised that Miles had no idea where the gel had ended up being contaminated and becoming a chemical bomb. ‘I had no idea, none. Nothing at all. Nada. Is that understood?’

‘You must understand where I am coming from, you were the one to use the gel, you were the only one who opened the jar weren’t you? Does that not make any logical sense to you Miles?’ she asked

‘I am not a mind reader, who knows, someone else could have opened the jar and then re sealed it.’ Miles added as his patience began to wane, he was surprised that he had lasted the past few hours of intense questioning, he never in his wildest dreams imagined that he would be a suspect in the investigation.

Miles had never put a foot wrong since he stepped into Summer Bay, he did his job, loved his family so why was he being treated like a lowlife criminal? He was so incensed at the continued interrogation; he had better things to do, like catch up on sleep.

I am not a criminal. I am a teacher, an English teacher; I know nothing about science and chemicals, so how the hell did I compose a bomb? Why would I compose a bomb? And not only do that but Use the bloody thing on myself? AND not only that but then defuse it…or well, get someone else to defuse it? Surely then, if I made it, I would know how to defuse it? Does that make any logical sense? Does it?

He thought miserably to himself. He tightened his hands into a fist and then flexed them; he was beginning to lose feelings in his hands.

‘You do realise how ridiculous that sounds’ Charlie said as Watson rejoined the interview’

‘Does it? I did not set that bomb? Why would I make a bomb and use it on myself?’

Charlie and Watson exchanged an unreadable glance between them and turned back to Miles who then carried on. ‘I know I can be dense at times, that is just me, I don’t deny it but why would I use a bomb on myself? Huh? Why?!’

‘Furthermore, and yes I am using a technical english word because my brain is fried, would I defuse a bomb that apparently’ and he made air quotes around the word a apparently ‘I composed?’

‘Can you answer those questions?’ he added in frustration before either Charlie or Watson got a chance to ask him a question’

‘Calm down Mr. Copeland’

‘No, I will not. None of this was down to me. I did not make that bomb. Capisce?’

‘Calm down, we have to do this by the book, it was a bomb’

‘Yes, it doesn’t take Einstein to work that out’ Miles retorted, rapidly losing his patience.

‘Look that is enough questioning for now’ Watson put in.

Miles didn’t even smile, he was too annoyed and tired to make a sarcastic or witty reply to them both.

Charlie relented. ‘Fine, we can carry this on at a later stage’

‘Can. I. Go.’

‘Yes, but less of the attitude’ Watson said and fixed him a stern glare.

‘Understood’ he said and for good measure added in a salute as he left the interview room and walked out of the police station.

Back in the interview room…

‘So have we traced the compounds of the chemical bomb?’

‘Yes, we have.’

‘To?’ Charlie asked

‘A warehouse in Reefton Lakes’

‘A name?’

‘It is registered to a business which was based in Melbourne but relocated to New South Wales about 6 months ago’

‘6 months ago, and who owns the business?’

‘Dead end, there is no primary business owner’

Charlie frowned, she thought to herself, how is that possible, it doesn’t make any sense at all.

‘Okay, who uses the warehouse, there has to be a paper trail’ Charlie said a few moments later’

‘You wont believe whom’ Watson said as she stood up.

Charlie looked at her and waited for her response ‘Who?’

‘Mr. Darryl Braxton’

*

‘Sorry Sergeant, are you implying that I am somehow involved in the failed bomb attack?’ Brax asked

‘Answer the question, do you or do you not use the warehouse in Reefton Lake?’

‘Yes, as I am sure you are aware, I store my furniture in there when I relocated to Summer Bay, there are many rooms in that warehouse, I rent two of them.’

‘Yes, true’ Charlie conceded as Brax’s eyes bore into her, she couldn’t get rid of the image of Brax on the beach, glistening with water as he shook the excess off and then toweled himself down after a morning swim.

‘So there is no need for anymore questions’

‘Not so fast’ Charlie said once she had regained her composure, the chemicals have been traced to a specific room and that room is rented by you, only you and your brothers have a key’

‘Copies of keys can be made’ Brax dismissed.

‘Again, true but it is no coincidence that the attacks started with your arrival in the Bay’

Brax was beginning to get annoyed at this point, she had no clear evidence, it was purely circumstantial, and he had better things to do.

‘And? I am pretty sure, we were not the only people to arrive in the Bay on that specific day’

Charlie stopped and looked at him ‘this investigation is still ongoing, but I know you are involved somehow, so rest assured that whatever happens, I will be on your case 24/7’

‘I am sure you will’ Brax said as she walked away from him. He admired her from behind, he liked her as a woman but he didn’t like the cop side of her, she was too close for comfort.

He could only see one logical way out of it all and he decided that he had to take action; this couldn’t be allowed to carry on.

He was not going to let his plan be derailed, scratch that he thought. I will not let it be derailed no matter how smoking hot she is.

*

‘Do you really think there is something to this?’ Angelo asked Nicole after he had finished his shift in Angelo’s. Nicole was perched on a chair sipping at an orange juice. Unbeknownst to them, Charlie was listening in on their conversation.

‘I do, there are too many coincidences’ she added

‘Hmm. Have you spoken to the police?’ he asked but knowing what the answer was going to be

‘No, I sound mad telling you, they’d laugh me out of the station’

‘It does sound like too much to ignore, or to laugh off’ Angelo admitted

‘So what do I do?’

Angelo thought to himself ‘Leave it with me. I need to think about this’

‘Okay, I will do’ Nicole added as she stood up. ‘I better go and rescue Colleen from George’

He smiled ‘Do you want company?’

‘Why not’ she responded and smiled at him.

As they left the restaurant, Charlie paid her bill and walked out pondering their conversation, she was sure that there was more to it than just a bomb, it seemed like a conspiracy and she needed to make sure that she had all the information.

She walked around to the back of the diner and used the shortcut to reach her house, not long before she had just reached the alleyway, did she feel a hand around her mouth as she pushed down to the floor.

She could feel kicks and derogatory words being thrown at her but she didn’t know what they were and she scrunched her face up in a bid to quench the pain but it seemed to make the attacks worse as the pain kept on and on at her till she finally succumbed to darkness.

*

Nicole sat on the sofa in shock as Angelo explained to her exactly what had happened to Charlie late last night.

‘There was a note?’ she asked in clarification

‘In her pocket. Yes’

‘Saying that I had to stop fishing?’

Angelo breathed in ‘It didn’t actually say that but...’ he stopped talking as he didn’t want to overwhelm Nicole.

‘It insinuated that though’ she said and sobbed slightly when Angelo nodded in response, he was not going to insult her intelligence.

‘It will be okay’ he assured her

‘How?’

‘No it wont, if it was just me I could just about cope, but this is not fair on George.’

‘So what you going to do?’ he asked in exasperation, he didn’t like how irrational Nicole seemed to be acting like.

‘I don’t know maybe, the best thing to do is to leave town?’

‘Run away’ Angelo said which summed up Nicole’s thought pattern.

‘I don’t know, look I need to sleep for a while. Can you let yourself out?’

‘Sure I will do’

Later on..

Nicole had spent nearly 3 hours lying in her bed making sure George was okay and then she sighed.

I wish I knew what to do. I cant and wont let my son be hurt, no way.

A small voice in her head piped up. You are a parent, so use your own parent to help you. As she finished thinking, a plan formulated in her brain…I need to break my father out of prison, he would know exactly what to do and how to do it.

She smiled to herself as she looked at George who was sucking his thumb and she allowed herself to sleep with hope.

You know I love this chapter, but I am so worn out so I wont do the whole detailed response...as for the ghostwriter..am saying nothing :P

I do like the way the whole chapter was pretty much based on Miles and Charlie.

This bit had me in laughter..

Does it?

& this bit, I couldnt stop laughing when I first read it..

‘Furthermore, and yes I am using a technical english word because my brain is fried, would I defuse a bomb that apparently’ and he made air quotes around the word a apparently ‘I composed?’

& this bit..and this is the last bit I will quote for this chapter, I promise..

‘Calm down, we have to do this by the book, it was a bomb’

‘Yes, it doesn’t take Einstein to work that out’ Miles retorted, rapidly losing his patience.

Looking forward to reading more Carina

Well done Tele :) x

Loved Miles getting annoyed by Charlie and Watson's silly questoining about the bomb.

I wonder what Brax's plan is. Surely he wouldn't go as far as attacking Charlie or getting someone esle too? It was a shocker for her to get attacked.

WOW Nicole's planning to break Roman out of prison I'm not too sure why through. Maybe it's just me but I don't remember Nicole and Angelo being in this story. But saying that I'm looking forward to seeing the big prison breakout happening.

Well Done Tele and also well done to your ghost writer :D

Look forward to more.
