Sorry about the cr*pness that is this chapter, but I have had to stop and start and haven't been able to get a flow with it, I hope it doesn't suck too much!

Chapter 18

"Charlie" Liam shouted as he knocked on the door. He looked to the number on the door, checking that he had the right door and wasn't bothering some poor neighbour. Sighing with slight anger, Liam knocked on the door harder and shouted a little louder

"She's not in!" A woman bellowed from the top window of her house "She left a few hours ago with a bloke in a black car" The womans face was filled with anger "Now can you shut up because my son is trying to sleep"

"Sorry" Liam held his hand up "And thank you" Liam smiled. The woman nodded before she brought her head back into the house and closed the window.

Liam heard the window close as he took his phone out of his pocket; he highlighted Angelo's name and was about to press call, but the sight of Roo on the beach made him remember what he, Roo, Sid, Miles, Leah and Bianca had all spoken about. Closing down his phonebook, Liam placed his phone back into his pocket and ran toward where Roo was just about to set up for a relax on the beach

"Roo" Liam said breathlessly

"Oh, hey Liam" Roo smiled "What's up"

"You haven't seen Charlie have you?" Roo shook her head "Its just, Angelo has given me-" Liam took the wad of cash from his pocket and showed Roo "Nearly $1000 to make Charlie presentable for the fight tomorrow"

Roo's mouth opened with shock "To make Charlie look presentable?" She echoed "I think Angelo is the one who needs to look presentable"

"The more I look at this from Charlie's point of view, the more I just want to smack Angelo" Liam put the money back into his pocket "Charlie has stood beside him through everything; the club opening, the money scandals, the loss of the money everything. And she's treated like crap"

"I think there is a line forming. Brax at the front followed by you, Sid, Miles and everyone else in the bay" Roo smiled "But no, I haven't seen Charlie. I can give you a call if I see her though"

"Yea, that'd be great. Thanks Roo" Liam smiled as he began to walk away

"No worries"

Brax sat on the chair and watched as Charlie slept.

For the longest time, he had held Charlie in his arms; her cries becoming harder and more heartbreaking to hear. Brax himself shed a tear or two as he felt Charlie's entire body shake; he didn't want to let her go, he wanted her to be safe, to feel safe.

Brax sat back in the chair as his mind began to wander Did Angelo know that Charlie had a baby? Was Angelo the father?. Brax looked to the ground, as if he were looking for the answer to appear in the carpet below him.

Charlie began to wake as Brax was deep in thought, he never noticed her moving slightly in the bed. Charlie sat up in bed and leant against the headboard of the bed and watched as Brax continued to think. She wondered what he was thinking, was what he was thinking good or bad? did he think differently of her?

Charlie took a deep breath as she prepared herself to talk to Brax for the first time since she told him about the baby. He still didn't know the full story; Charlie couldn't contain what she had bottled up inside once she'd let herslef go. She had cried herself to sleep.

Removing the covers from herself, Charlie noticed that she was wearing one of Brax's shirts; it was long enough on her to act as a nightgown. The last thing Charlie remembered was Brax wrapping his arms around her as she stood naked in front of him.

She gazed at Brax and smiled at his gentleman gesture. "Hey" Charlie whispered as she stood infront of Brax.

Brax's head dropped as he moved his hands in shock "Hey" Brax slowly rose to his feet, meeting Charlie in the eye when he stood upright "You look a lot better than you did before" Brax put his hands in his pockets.

"There's more Brax" Charlie looked to the ground "So much more-"

"Charlie" Brax interupted. He placed his hand under Charlie's chin and gently pushed it up so her eyes were, once more, meeting his "You don't have to tell me"

Charlie shook her head "Yes I do" a lone tear rolled down Charlie's face, which Brax wiped away with his thumb, before nodding to Charlie, letting her know she could carry on talking. "I, er-" Charlie sat on the bed. Brax sat beside her "I was fourteen when I had my baby. My mum had only died the year before and I knew that having a baby in the house was the last thing we could cope with. But I wanted to be its mum, I wanted to hold the baby close to my chest and never let go" Charlie mimicked holding a baby close to her chest, Brax's heart broke at the sight of this; even after thirteen years the torture of giving the baby up was still prevelent "I hated that day when they took the baby away from me. I remember collapsing to the floor, watching as the couple placed my baby in the back of their car. My dad was behind me, crying -but not as hard as I was. He wrapped his arms around me and tried to assure me everything was going to be okay. He was wrong; he died six months later and I was all alone" Charlie spoke in monotoneously, she sat as numb as she was the day her baby was adopted "Everyday I thought about my baby; what they looked like, how they smiled, what thier favourite colour was" Charlie spoke with a more happy voice; the way a mother would when they talked about their son or daughter

"What did you have?" Brax asked "A son or a daughter?"

Charlie looked up to Brax and smiled "I had a little girl" Charlie tucked her hair behind her ear "She was perfect. Her eyes were just so big" Charlie opened her eyes wide; she was still in bewildered awe over the size of her daughter's eyes "Too big for her small face. I remember looking into them and hoping that they would remember what I looked like; I knew I wouldn't have her for long and I just hoped that everytime she closed her eyes, she would still see me stood over her, looking down on her with a smile"

"She sounds like she was gorgeous" Brax smiled "Well, she would, having a mum who looks like you"

Charlie looked to her hands which were in her lap. She felt like a load had been lifted from her shoulders: she wanted to sigh with relief, but she didn't want Brax to hear her. she felt like she had burdened him enough with her sob story "Is there anything you want to know?" Charlie asked after a moment of silence

"I did when I was watching you sleep. But I think I wont ask them" Brax replied

"Why not?" Charlie asked as she looked to Brax

"Its not my place to really know is it?"

"Brax, I wanted to tell you this, I NEEDED to tell you. Angelo could no way understand any of this, he'd use it against me like he does everything" Charlie paced the room as she spoke to Brax "I -er, I haven't told anyone the full story" Charlie confessed "Bianca knows a little detail, but not the whole thing. I never wnated to tell her the full story because I was sacred that Angelo would find out" Charlie looked to the window "Bianca gets loose lips when she's had a few drinks and she would have told Liam everything"

"I can imagine" Brax smiled before a second bout of silence fell between to two "was she Angelo's?" Brax asked

"No she wasn't" Charlie shook her head "And as crazy as this sounds, I wish she was"

"Come again?" Brax asked, shocked

"Because then at least everything that happened to me wouldn't have done. I wouldn't have been so messed up and I would have been able to keep her"

"I suppose if that's the way you mean it then, yea" Brax replied

"Compared to her father, Angelo is a saint" Charlie wiped her face from a tear that had escaped her eye "My mum got really sick and I couldn't cope with seeing her getting sicker and sicker each day. I was only twelve when she was diagnosed with cancer and every case of cancer I had heard of, everyone died. By the time I was thirteen I'd had enough; she didn't look like my mum anymore it was so heartbreaking seeing her go through all that pain" Charlie stared at the wall, once more feeling numb. Brax moved closer to her and wrapped himself around her "I don't know how she lasted as long as she did; in a sickening way I was relieved when she died: I knew she wouldn't be in anymore pain and she could be at peace. But I missed her so much, I needed her so much -I still do" Charlie choked on the last few words, tears streaming down her face as Brax's hold on her became more comforting

"You don't have to go on" Brax whispered in her ear

"Brax -"

"No Charlie, I'm serious" Brax interupted "I love how you feel that you can open up to me with all this stuff; I really really love you for that, but I'm not having you tell me all this at the expense of you" Brax tucked a strand of Charlie's hair behind her ear "I hate seeing you with tears coming down your face" Brax added as he wiped a tear form her cheek

"You love that about me?" Charlie smiled awkwardly

"I don't just love those little things about you Charlie" Brax looked deep into Charlie's eyes and took her hands in his "I love you"

Charlie's heart beated a little faster as she looked lovingly into Brax's eyes; she'd been falling for him for the longest time, and ever since she began to tell him about her baby, Charlie felt that her falling for him was finally over: she was completely in love with him too

"Say something, anything" Brax asked as he looked slightly worried at the silent Charlie

"I, I...I" Chalrie stammered as she tried to get over her shock at Brax's confession

"I should have kept my mouth shut" Brax pulled his hands away from Charlie's and placed his face in them

"No" Charlie grabbed Brax's hand and held them tight "I love you too" Charlie smiled to Brax before leaning in close to him

Liam sat in the diner, cradling his third cup of coffee. He spun the cup round as he tapped his leg under the table. Sighing with defeat, he threw his head back and looked to the ceiling.

"Sounds like you've had enough darl" Irene perked up as she walked over to Liam and sat opposite him

Liam pulled his head back and looked to the woman sat opposite; the one voice of reason in the bay who would help with any matter "I have" LIam said with a small laugh "This town is so small, and yet the one person I'm looking for is nowhere to be found"

"Who is it you're looking for darl" Irene asked

"Charlie. Angelo has given me some money and instructions to get her to look great for the fight tomorrow"

"Charlie isn't the one who's fighting" Irene pointed out, "Why does she need to look good?"

"To boost Angelo's standing as the main man" Liam mocked Angelo's words "He only has Charlie as a pawn in his domination game; he doesn't look passed her looks"

"I take it then, that you've had no luck"

"Not a nibble. I've found; Roo, Sid, Elijah, the kids from school, you, Leah, Miles and Alf" Liam listed "Not exactly who I'm looking for"

"She'll turn up" Irene placed her hand on Liam's arm, just as Charlie walked into the diner -her arm interlinked with Bianca

"Excuse me" Liam said to Irene as he rose to his feet "Where have you been?" Liam asked

"Out" Charlie repelied

"I've looked everywhere for you" Liam said as he went to kiss Bianca

"Sorry. I just went for a walk and got sidetracked" Charlie replied as she took a seat

"No, you can't sit. I've been given my marching orders" Liam grabbed Charlie befor eshe could get too comfortable "Angelo has ordered me to take you shopping"

"If its so important, why doesn't he take me" Charlie replied

"Are you high? Angelo spending quality time with you?" Liam laughed "Besides, I need to talk to you about something anyway" Liam held his hand out for charlie to take. Both Charlie and Bianca looked at Liam's gesture and were taken aback; Liam and Charlie never really did get along, and for Liam to hold his hand out AND take her shopping, it was a huge step forward for them both.
