1990 Episode Discussion

Not sure what to make of the "Martin's dying" plot.It almost came across as a comedy plot that didn't know it was a comedy plot at times, with the characters taking the idea seriously.Although the moment where Carly says "What's Martin always wanted that's been out of his reach?" and slowly everyone looks at her was laugh out loud funny. And it's nice that he finally got a kiss off her after two years of hoping.

What I liked about the Martin's Dying plot is that he got to go out with Carly, and it was a lovely piece of continuity linking back to the pilot episode. I have to agree about Carly, I think Ben, Tom and Pippa all seemed quite selfish and it was the first time that I disliked Ben. I wasn' very keen on both of them being stubborn, refusing to say they love each other. Ben just came out of it looking quite childish.

Episode 507 is certainly a turning point foe the show with Martin gone and Celia announcing her departure. :( I do feel like a little bit of my heart is going with them to be honest. There have been times when I haven't full appreciated Lance and Martin as characters, so it's strange to suddenly be so emotional that they're going but I do think their friendship has been extremely touching at times. I can see why people regard 1990 as the end of the show's first golden era.

Haha, Sally and Mullet brought a warm smile to my face a number of times.

I do think Pippa and Tom are written as slightly immature some times. They are easy to throw a strop at times which comes across as a bit childish but I understand why they are upset about the wedding.

I've made a few adjustments to my TV and was able to record H&A off the TV today without a bad reception (Friday) so I'm catching up via Youtube and hopefully I can start recording regularly. If so, I may be able to upload but is there much point if it might be irregular uploads? Let me know if you'd be interested.

I'm glad Sophie's getting the help she needs and I liked the moment between Pippa and Adam. Does Sophie have a little crush on Adam? Not that I blame her really.

Carly is living in dream world. How can she afford a big house with one wage since Ben has barely started his job and who says he'll keep it? She needs to be more realistic!

If you can upload eps before AusTvClassics I would be interested, even if it was irregularly :)

I enjoyed the last week's worth of episodes. It was hard watching Sophie struggling to read to Steven, really felt for her at that moment. People who cannot read or write face such stigma and embarrassment which is so unfair because there is nothing wrong with their intelligence, they simply haven't had the chance that most people have to learn properly.

Martin's exit was really touching, glad it was strongly focussed on his friendship with Lance. The show will never have another male/male friendship like it. Even though they were mainly comedy characters, their friendship was true and believable. Liked the moment on the sofa when they were talking about Martin coming back for a visit and the two of them going out on the rage like old times, but neither of them really believing it deep down.

Celia's scenes with Alf and Ailsa as she told them why she wanted to go to Africa and Alf finally accepting it and telling her how much he will miss her, were really well written and once again we hear what I suppose is Celia's music.

See, Carly has a lot of growing up to do, this is one of the reasons why she is not yet ready to marry someone, this "relationship" with Ben was hideously rushed, and Ben should know better also. And how dare they bring kids into it!!!!

I'm glad there's someone else who shares my option about Carly. At least Bobby is more practical and has her head screwed on right. :)

Carly needs to realise when you first get married you have to settle of something in a low price range and she shouldnt just assume because Ben is italian he will want a big family. Carly has always been selfish from when the show started

Seen up to 510.I must admit I felt a very strong pang at the end of 506 and I realised this was going to be pretty much the last time we saw Lance and Martin together.(Well, for about ten years anyway.)His last episode was a bit of an anti-climax, he was basically only in it for a couple of farewell scenes sandwiched in the middle of the episode and the choice of farewellees seemed a bit eccentric:Ben says goodbye to him but not Adam, Matt, Carly, Bobby or Steven?

The illiteracy storyline's been handled pretty well, although as is often the case a character who's hid it successfully for years suddenly has everyone asking her to read things.(As someone pointed out at the time, Sophie did seem to read a menu when she started work at the Diner, although it's just about possible it was a lucky guess.)I actually think Sophie's got a bit of a crush on Matt, she seemed to be flirting with him back when they first met and again at the surf club before the accident. Then again, she's probably at the age when she's crushing on everyone.

So I was successful in recording Friday and Monday without any major problems - there are a couple of minor drop outs (just a frame skip here and there so it isn't that distracting really) but it seems that is just what happens with 7TWO with it being a lower band broadcast/channel. PM me guys - large files.

Lance final episode and the one leading up to are classic and I cant fault them at all really other than the fact that Lance was axed (presumably?). I'm so going to miss him, he was always a favourite of mine along with Martin but these early years really cemented that for me, great characters.

Also brill writing of the Sally/Lance friendship over the years, its been really consistent and realistic. You could think on paper that having a child and someone in their early 20's as best friends would be odd and bizarre, but no way. I'll miss their scenes together.

Overall a sombre and poignant exit for Lance, well written.

I think their first few months were kind of terrible but that they really grew on screen over time and became the heart of the show, along with Celia, somewhere mid-1988. I do feel like we've been on a journey with them. They had some great highs (Leanne, any interaction with Celia, Lance and Sally's friendship) but some lows (Image, yuk). I'm surprised that I've actually found Marilyn to be quite annoying and a bit of a spare part during Lance and Martin's finale few weeks. Havin never seen these episodes before, I was quite surprised to feel that way about the character.

I will definitely miss Lance and Sally's friendship, they're great together.
