I know the Pippa debate gets trotted out regularly but Vanessa will always be Pippa to me....I've watched the show since '88 and it's only natural for me to think of her as the real Pippa.... Debra Lawrence = good - Vanessa Downing = best I agree Dibble even though i've not been watching since the 80s (i'm only 19 ) Well you have good taste my friend Can't wait till Real Pippa arrives!! Yay!! "Vanessa Downing" is simply not Pippa!! Never liked Michael much neither.... Debra Lawrence did make a great Pippa but Vanessa was the benchmark....
Bobby Forever Missed Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 you know its funny I was only a 7 year old tot when the last re run started in '99 but its amazing that I remember things from '89-'90 like Bobby's parentage and Tom's death i love being an early '90s birth!

I always saw her as Pippa but watching the Early Years I see VD as Pippa now, will my opinion have changed when DL debuts, will I get used to her over time or will I hate her? Questions!

alexx Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 I don't think she wears the dungarees, but she does continue to wear the same or very similar clothes for a while as far as I remember. I don't feel like its a VD v DL thing because I genuinely like them both - they both brought different qualities to the role. I like how Vanessa Downing played her as quite laid back and could be funny/silly at times, just as I like how Debra made the character much more mumsy and less like an aunt, which is how I see Vanessa's Pippa. I can't remember if anyone says anything about her new hair colour. I think its been great how the writers gave VD Pippa quite a lot of screen time building up to the change, rather than shifting her off screen.

I watched H&A from the start in '88, so Vanessa has always been Pippa to me. Debra, at first, I felt wasn't Pippa, just an imposter but over the years I grew to like her as Pippa too. As was pointed out, they both bring differing perspectives to the role, just as actors have done likewise with James Bond, Doctor Who etc. Having seen TEY over the last two years tho has reinforced my belief that Vanessa is Pippa....

Debra's Pippa eventually gets her own unique wardrobe (those terrible floral print dresses got a bit of a cult following in the 90s!) but originally they dress her similarly to Vanessa's Pippa.
