1990 Episode Discussion

I'm begining to wonder about Adam, especially as he's around for just short of another 900 episodes. When you realise that Adam leaves the same time that Jack arrives and they start building the mid-90's gang, you realise that's quite a period of time.

I kind of joke about it in the 1989 Year Summary regarding Matt who managed to be around all year, yet did nothing of any note and I wonder whether Adam is going to be like that.

I've heard people call him a 'classic' character before by the time he leaves, but I haven't seen any of the episodes from the following couple of seasons so I don't know. I wouldn't say he's one of the best characters but equally, his relationship with Matt and Marilyn is lovely to watch. It will be strange when they both leave and he's stillm there for another two years.

I can't wait to see the Pippa switch, was it a shock the second time round?

No, not really because I knew it was coming...I just didn't know when exactly.

Even though you knew it was going to happen, was it strange to see an 'imposter' suddenly playing Pippa? Alexx says she was just chopping vegetables in the kitchen, I can't wait to see it.

Was she facing away from the camera then suddenly 'hello FakePippa!'

Haven't watched the whole episode yet Edward, I just skimmed through it but I think she's facing the camera from memory - it doesn't seem to be a dramatic entrance (such as a new Doctor Who or James Bond).

There's a scene with her & Steven talking that just looks plain odd - he carries on not knowing any different but we are fully aware that there's an 'imposter' at work - it will take some time to adjust to Debra....

Most people on the Forum here seem to like Debra better than Vanessa - they're certainly entitled to their opinion but for me it feels like the end of what I'd call the 'golden era' of H&A....from this point on there'll be dramatic character shifts, original cast departures and so forth....

Must get back to work :(

I think having seen the entirety of VD's stint, something that I think some of us thought we'd never say and a sizable part of DL's, although spread out, I think VD's portrayal seems the more interesting of the two characters and I think I prefer her as an actor as well.

I was just watching 585 on Youtube. VD's final line was "I must go."

I agree with you and I must acknowledge that they are both great actors. Many people on the Forum here had never seen Vanessa Downing's portrayal of Pippa before 7Two started screening TEY. They naturally gravitate toward DL, which is fair enough. I am the opposite, I saw more of Vanessa as Pip than I ever did Debra.

Being an 'Early Early Years' fan who originally watched it daily from 1988-1991 (before tuning in and out intermittently thereafter) I always considered Vanessa the real Pippa and this bias of mine has carried forward to this day.

The relatively rapid transition from Pippa 1 & Tom to Pippa 2 & Michael was a source of annoyance that still irritates me to this day about the show. I should get over it but it did tarnish my love of the show somewhat....from that point onwards, I watched it irregularly and I probably missed out on a lot of good stuff - whether or not I discontinue to watch TEY if 7Two proceeds into 1991/1992 remains to be seen but I'm more accepting of the situation now than I was in 1991....

I remember being annoyed at the time too about how quickly the show changed from Pippa and Tom to Pippa and Michael.I was a kid at the time and I loved the show back then so I got over it and continued to watch the show regularly for another 10 years.

Well, as we both agree that the transition was too quick and annoying, I'll try to follow your example by being more open-minded about episodes from 1991 onward :)

I never took to Michael much though, maybe I compared him too much with Tom. Just never liked that character very much, which partially dampened my enthusiasm for the show :(
