Chapter 6

Thanks to everyone who’s been reading this and taking the time out to review it.

“And the big sharptooth came and he chased after Littlefoot and Cera.

Then there was a big earthshake and the sharptooth fell down over the

cliff but Littlefoot’s mummy saved Littlefoot and Cera. And then there

was another big earthshake.” Shawn said.

“Wow. You’ll have to let me watch this later.” Ruby replied.

“Okay. Them dinosaurs is cool.”

“So other than dinosaurs what else do you like?” she asked.

“Um, Ice Age.” Shawn said.

“Doesn’t the third part have dinosaurs in?” Casey asked.

“Yeah but it still funny.”

“Shawn, I thought I told you to eat your breakfast, not give a

commentary on every dinosaur movie you can think of.” Charlie said.

“But Rubes and Casey want to know.” Shawn replied.

“I’m pretty sure you can tell them all about it later.”

“I got a better idea. We watch Ice Age 3 later cause its funny. I like

Buck. He’s very funny. He called this dinosaur Rudy and it keeps trying

to kill him. And the Possums were like did you die? And Buck said sadly

yes, but I lived.”

“Shawn.” Charlie shouted.

“Alright mummy. I gotta get dressed now.” He said unhappy.

In the car

“Are we there yet?” Shawn asked bored.

“No.” Brax replied.

“Are we there yet?” Shawn asked again.

“How if you count to one thousand and by the time your finished we’ll be

there.”

“But daddy I can only count to one hundred.”

“Fine. Count to one hundred ten times.”

“One, two, ninety-nine, one thousand.” Shawn laughed.” Are we here

now?”

“Why is he being annoying?” Brax asked.

“Because he wants us to turn around the car and go home.” Shawn

replied.

Later

“Could that have been any more boring?” Shawn asked as they finally

walked back out of the building.

“I know I can’t believe we have to come back here tomorrow.” George

said.

“It wouldn’t have been so boring if you two had been paying attention.”

Nicole replied trying to look stern.

“But we were.” The two boys said in union.

“Nursery and reception are combined.”

“Our teachers name is Mrs Peterson.”

“And she was having a really bad hair day. Half the class was falling

asleep as she read that story.”

“As of tomorrow there’s a total of fourteen children in our class. We go

to school from 8-12.”

“In the morning we have reading and then a counting game. Then a

snack and we play outside for a little while.”

“Next its group activities and then we finally get to go home.” They said

alternatively.

“They were paying more attention than I was.” Brax laughed.

Liam and Bianca’s house

“So this is Shawn.” Bianca said smiling at the small boy.

“Shawn, this is mummy’s friend Bianca.” Charlie said.

“Oh so your Bianca. Mummy tell me all about you. She say you really pretty and you funny and you really suck at lying.” Shawn said.

“Excuse me Charlie?” Bianca asked looking up at her friend.

“You don’t have to repeat everything I tell you Shawn.”

“Sorry mummy.” Shawn giggled.

“Whys it so noisy out here?” Isobel asked, yawning as she walked into the kitchen.

“You feeling better now sweetie?” Bianca asked.

“Yeah. Who’s they?”

“Isobel this is Shawn and Shawn this is Isobel.”

“Hello. Your really pretty. I did not just say that out loud did I?” Shawn said going red.

“Mummy he’s funny.” Isobel laughed.

“Hi I’m home.” Liam said walking through the door. “Good lord, I swear its like seeing a ghost.” He said looking at Charlie.

“Did you hear Liam, your daughters feeling better.” Bianca said.

“My little princess is all better.” Liam said picking Isobel up.

“No I not daddy.” She said pretending to sound ill.

“Don’t worry daddy brought home some chocolate for my beautiful little girl and It will make you feel all better.”

“Liam Murphy, you better not be sneaking any more caramel chocolate to our daughter.” Bianca said.

“I wasn’t. And its not caramel its toffee.”

Diner next morning

“I still can’t believe this is little George.” Colleen said. “They grow up so fast don’t they. I remember with my Lance. One day he was a little boy and the next he was gone.”

“Do you mind if we order now Colleen?” Angelo asked.

“What do you want then?”

“2 coffees and toast for the boys. That alright?”

“Yes dad.” George said.

“Yes uncle Angelo.” Shawn said.

“Does that mean I get to call your dad uncle?” George asked.

“Now wait a minute.” Angelo said.

“Oh come on Angelo, we’re practically family anyway.” Brax said.

“You wish.” Angelo said under his breath.

“I know what I used to do was really wrong and I never should have started it. But I’m finished with that part of my life. I’ve changed.”

“What about Jake?”

“Jake’s in prison. But I swear if he ever comes near my family ever again I’ll kill him. As long as I live he’s never gonna hurt this family ever again.”

Perth

“Just remember they’ve got to think I died whilst they were transporting me okay. No one can know I escaped.” Jake said untying the ropes.

“I’ll never hear from you again right?” The guard asked him.

“As long as you do what your told I’ll disappear.”

“Okay then. Good luck with whatever’s so important.” He said driving off.

Jake smiled as he thought about everything that had just happened. He was free. Free to do what he wanted. He grabbed out his mobile and dialled a number.

“Hello.” The voice said.

“Hey mate.”

“Pirovic?”

“The one and only.”

“Its been too long mate.”

“Yeah I know. Look I need your help with something.”

“Anything mate…”

LOOOOOOOVED that, especially …..

 “I’m going to the library.”

“Why?”

“Figure out more about phobias.” He said walking out the door.

 I looked at the water. All the other people swimming in it. I couldn’t help being scared. I remembered that night when I’d been in the bath. The truth was I didn’t always hate water. In fact I’d loved water. But I didn’t want daddy to know because it was silly. I shouldn’t have been scared…but I couldn’t help it, I was. I continued to stare at the water as he looked at me trying to work out why.

“How about if I gave you something you really want in return for going into the water?” Brax asked.

Bribery. I guess maybe I could do it if I knew I’d get something I wanted in the end.

“Five more DVD’s.” I said knowing if he really was going to give me anything I wanted I should probably make the most of it.

“Alright, done.” He replied.

Now it was my turn to do the hard bit and face my fears. I pulled off my top and walked towards the edge of the pool. My heart was thrumming against my ribcage, hard and fast. I think I was trembling and I felt sick with fear. But I could do this. I looked up at daddy and his presence reassured me. I looked back down at the water and suddenly it didn’t scare me. I jumped into the water and I didn’t feel the least bit scared anymore. I looked back up at daddy. He smiled at me, proud written all over his face.

“I did it daddy.” I said too happy for words to describe.

“Yes you did Shawn.” He replied.

True to his word, we went shopping after and I ecstatically picked up the next five parts to my one DVD at home.

 “When Shawn was about two and a half I left him with a babysitter for the night. It was the first time I ever left Shawn with anyone. When she was giving him a bath that night she got distracted and he slipped and hit his head. It knocked him out and he started to drown. Ever since he’s always been edgy around water. He never went in the swimming pool again and he wouldn’t even go in the ocean.”

“No wonder he was scared.”

 “Come on lets go, lets go and run around and around. it’s a beautiful feeling we’ve finally find our peaceful valley and everybody’s having a goodtime now.”

“Well that was an interesting first 10 minutes. How long till its finished?” Brax asked bored.

“Brax this is nearly 2 hours. And you do remember you bought another four of these.” Charlie replied.

 “Shawn, I thought I told you to eat your breakfast, not give a

Chapter 7

“Chocolate cake mummy.” Shawn said pointing at the kitchen.

They were all in the diner having breakfast.

“Its too early Shawn. You’ll be bouncing off the walls all day.” Charlie said.

“Please mummy. I promise I won’t.” Shawn carried on begging.

“I have had an idea Shawn.” Brax said.

“What daddy what?”

Brax whispered something to him quickly.

“Ok daddy.”

“Uh, whats going on?” Charlie asked.

“We gonna play at the beach.” Shawn said happily.

“Really?” Charlie asked finishing her coffee.

“Yes.” Brax replied.

“Well before you do just take him back to the house and get his swimming clothes and don’t forget to put some sunscreen on him.”

“Right on it.” Brax said as the two of them left.

“Well, I think I’m going for a surf now. You coming Rubes?” Casey asked.

“You know I think I might pass on this one.” Ruby replied kissing him.

“Suit yourself.” He said leaving.

“Oh Charlie, I thought I might find you here.” Georgie said walking over to them.

“What’s up?” She asked.

“Well actually its about Jake.”

“What’s happened? He hasn’t escaped?” Ruby asked.

“No nothing like that. They were transporting him to back jail after his court hearing and there was an accident. He was killed on impact.”

“He’s dead?” Charlie said.

“Yeah. You don’t have to worry about him anymore.”

“Well thanks for telling us.” Ruby said.

“Better get going then, see you round. Oh and by the way Ruby, it is rather rude to check out someone’s private emails. Don’t do it again.” She said walking off.

“I won’t.” Ruby said. “I can’t believe it.”

“Neither can I but she’s right. We don’t have to worry about him anymore now and we can focus on being a family.”

“So what are you doing tomorrow night?” Ruby asked.

“Nothing yet. Why?”

“Oh nothing.”

“What are you up to?”

“Well I might have just planned a hens night.”

“You did what?”

“Oh come on it’ll be good. You know catch up with everyone. Have some fun.”

“So who’s looking after Shawn?”

“All sorted. I called Morag after we got back. And she said she was going to come down and see us all. And then I asked her to look after Shawn and she was fine with it.”

“I’d forgotten how much you used to irritate me.” She smiled.

“And you love me.”

“So what’s going on with you and Casey these days?”

“Not much actually. Just trying to get through Uni.”

What’s Casey studying?”

“School teaching. He decided that after all the work the teachers had put in to getting him to pass his HSC he wanted to help other kids like him who had learning disabilities.” Ruby said.

“That’s considerate of him.”

“Yeah. He’s been wonderful these last few years. He gave me space when I needed it to grieve for you and then he was there when I needed him again.”

“So when are you thinking of going back to Uni then?”

“I don’t have a clue.”

“Daddy, daddy I drew picture for you. It’s the ocean. Its really pretty. Do you like it?” George asked as he sat down next to Angelo.

“Yeah its great mate.” Angelo said not even looking at it.

“You want to put it up?” George asked looking slightly disappointed at his dads lack of interest.

“Okay then. Just leave it on the table and I’ll put it up later.” Angelo said taking another mouthful of his beer.

George got up, disheartened, and went to his room.

“Just because your disagreeing with me does not mean you have to take it out on George.” Nicole said angrily.

“I’m not taking it out on George. But I feel really uncomfortable being back here. Like something bads gonna happen.”

“Most of the Riverboys are either in jail or back where they belong. Heaths in jail and Brax…he’s not a threat anymore.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“He’s changed. No one around here has a problem with him except you.”

“Well excuse me if you don’t remember they put me in hospital.”

“Almost four years ago Angelo. This is our home now. George loves it here. You know how much trouble he had in the city, especially making friends. And he gets on really well with Shawn.”

“Ok fine. I’ll go and apologise.” Angelo said getting up.

“No don’t. Just wait until you’re in a better mood again.”

“Arrrrrrwwwww.” Shawn screamed running round the house, jumping all over the sofa and chairs and almost colliding with the walls.

“Shawn, I’m trying to work here.” Ruby said typing furiously on her laptop.

“You look funny upside down Rubes.” Shawn giggled lying upside down on the chair.

“Not in a laughing mood right now.” She replied.

“I a dinosaur Ruby. I roar like a tyranorex. Roar, roar, roar.” He said jumping up and standing like a T-Rex.

“I’m going out for a little while. In fact call me when the dinosaurs in bed.” Ruby said packing her stuff up and grabbing her car keys.

“Uh bye.” Charlie said as Ruby almost ran out of the house. “Shawn are you okay?”

“I not Shawn. I sharp tooth and I ROAR!” He said imitating dinosaurs.

“Daryl Braxton. You didn’t give him any chocolate cake did you?”

“Of course not. I would never disobey you like that.” He said walking into the kitchen trying to look completely innocent.

“Really? Then why is our son doing a really bad imitation of an extinct reptile in there?” She asked as Shawn started growling and waving his hands wildly.

“I have no idea.” Brax replied.

“You went back to the diner afterwards didn’t you?”

“Yes we did mummy.” Shawn said from on top of the cupboard.

“What are you doing up there?” Brax asked.

“I’s a teweldactal and I can fly.” He said as he jumped off the cupboard.

Brax ran into the living room and caught him just before he hit the floor.

“Did I fly?” Shawn asked opening his eyes.

“I hate to break it to you Shawn but you can’t fly.” Brax said putting the boy back down on the floor.

“Daddy you supposed to say ‘no you fall.’ “Shawn said flapping his arms.

“Ok I confess. I gave him the cake.” Brax said.

“Brax, when I tell you not to give him cake I mean don’t give him cake!” Charlie said.

“It was just a little piece of cake.” Trying to go back to looking innocent.

Charlie glared at him.

“What I meant to say was I’m sorry and when you tell me not to give him chocolate cake I won’t give him the cake.”

Following morning

“Mummy, daddy, wake up. There someone at the door.” Shawn said jumping on his parents bed.

“Who?” Brax groaned waking up as Shawn continued to bounce up and down.

“Hello.” Morag said from in the kitchen.

“Good grief, get out of bed Brax.” Charlie said jumping out of bed.

She pushed Shawn out of their room and shut the door.

“They getting up now.” Shawn said to Morag as they went into the living room.

“So…Shawn. Whilst we wait for your parents why don’t you tell me about yourself?”

“Well…I’m 2 years and 327 days old. Its 38 more days till I be 3. I love dinosaurs.”

“Well that’s very interesting.” She replied as Charlie and Brax walked in. “Good your up. It’s nice to see you again Charlie and Shawn here is very cute.”

“So I hear your babysitting tonight.” Charlie said sitting down.

“Yes, it is very hard to say no to Ruby.”

“So I hear that we’re having a buck’s night this evening.” Brax said walking into the restaurant to find Casey.

“What are you talking about? Oh no it was Ruby wasn’t it?” Casey said.

“She can’t help herself.”

“So does this mean it’s off?”

“No it’s alright. Guess we could use a party.” He said smiling.

“Really?”

“Yeah.”

“You got the pizza’s?” George asked climbing up on one of the stools.

“Would that be these four?” Casey said putting four boxes in front of him.

“Hey mate I said no running.” Angelo said as he and Nicole walked in.

“What are you doing tonight?” Brax asked them.

“It’s Friday and we were going to have an early night.” Angelo replied.

“Well I was having a buck’s night and I wondered if you wanted to come?”

“Are you serious?” Angelo asked surprised.

“I want to get on with you this time Angelo. Come, it’ll be good. Oh and whilst I’m at it Charlie might have said something about inviting you too Nicole.”

“What about the kids?”

“Well Morag’s looking after Shawn and Isobel so if you asked her nice enough…”
