Episode 20

Later that afternoon, Pippa is cooking dinner when the phone rings.
Pippa: Ian, would you be able to get that please?
*Ian answers the phone*
Ian: Hello? Miss Martin, how are you?
Leanne: *over the phone* I’m rather well, Mr Routledge.
Ian: I take it this is about Cherie?
Leanne: As a matter of fact, it is. Cherie will now be under the care of you and Pippa on a permanent basis.
*Ian looks shocked, but happy*
Ian: That’s great news, Miss Martin. Pippa and I can’t wait to tell Cherie.
*Cherie comes downstairs at this point*
Cherie: Tell me what?
Ian: Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow. Bye
Leanne: Bye, Mr Routledge.
*Ian hangs up the phone*
Cherie: Was that Miss Martin?
Ian: It was. Listen, you know how you wanted to be here with me and Pip permanently?
Cherie: Yes?
Ian: It’s been approved!
*Cherie looks really happy*
Cherie: I’m so happy!
Pippa: Come here, sweetheart.
*Cherie hugs Pippa before giving Ian a hug as well*
Ian: I think this calls for a celebration.
Pippa: I agree.
(Meanwhile, Sally is upstairs talking with Tiegan and Stephanie)
Sally: How was the city?
Tiegan: It was good. Steph and I had a great time.
Stephanie: Maybe we can take you one weekend and have a girls day out. How does that sound, Sally?
Sally: Okay, I guess. *looks sad*
Stephanie: Are you okay, Sally?
Sally: Vinnie and I have been fighting a lot lately.
Tiegan: About the bitch!
Sally: Tiegan’s right. I saw him kiss Gypsy at the Surf Club.
Stephanie: Gypsy’s nothing but a slag! How dare she do that?!
Tiegan: Well, she’ll be getting a phone call from me later tonight. *smiles*
Sally: My problems with Vinnie is part of the reason why I’ve decided to stay here for a few days.
Stephanie: We’ve always got your back, Sally.
Tiegan: Gypsy Nash stinks! In fact, she stinks more than that Marianne chick Steph and I spoke to on the train coming home.
Sally: Body odour?
Tiegan: Yeah. I swear she could do with some soap.
Sally: Is she from here?
Stephanie: No, she lives in Newcastle.
Sally: Girls, you can’t say anything to Pippa and Ian about Vinnie. I want to tell them in my own time.
Tiegan: Okay.
Pippa: *from downstairs* Dinner’s ready!
*Sally, Stephanie and Tiegan head downstairs*

During dinner, Sally looks sad as the others eat.
Pippa: Shall we tell them the good news?
Ian: Yes.
Pippa: Okay, kids. Ian and I have some wonderful news to tell you all.
Matthew: You’re pregnant?
Pippa: No, sweetheart. *laughs*
Tiegan: What is it then?
Pippa: Cherie will be living with us permanently from now on.
Stephanie: That’s excellent news.
*Everyone applauds*
Cherie: Thanks everyone.
Ian: How was everyone’s day?
Sally: Caught the bus from Yabbie Creek to come here. That’s about it.
Pippa: Are you alright, sweetheart? You look very down.
Sally: Oh, it’s just a headache. Would it be okay if I went upstairs and had a rest?
Pippa: Yes, alright.
*Sally heads upstairs. Tiegan and Stephanie share a concerned look*
Ian: Anyone else?
Matthew: I just chilled with Michelle at the youth centre. I ended up beating her and Julia in pool.
Stephanie: Tiegan and I made a new friend on the train coming home.
Pippa: Really?
Tiegan: Yes. However, the only downside was that she reeked of body odour.
*Cherie and Matthew start to laugh*
Pippa: She can’t have smelt that bad.
Tiegan: I could smell her when Steph and I got on the train in the city!
Cherie: What’s her name?
Stephanie: Marianne.
Matthew: What a strange name.
Cherie: I agree.
(After dinner, Tiegan hears Sally crying from Cherie’s room.)
*Stephanie comes upstairs*
Stephanie: What’s up with Sally?
Tiegan: That bitch Gypsy! Steph, why don’t you comfort her? I’m going to make a phone call.
Stephanie: Okay.
*As Stephanie heads into Cherie’s room to comfort Sally, Tiegan enters the bathroom and rings Gypsy from her mobile*
Gypsy: *picking up* Hello?
Tiegan: Hey, listen here you s**t! If I ever find out that you are within an inch of Vinnie Patterson and start flirting with him or kissing him behind Sally’s back, I’ll make sure that Alison finds out and you will be one very sorry girl! Do we understand each other, Gypsy Nash?!
Gypsy: Tiegan, what I do with Vinnie is none of your business!
Tiegan: REALLY?! SALLY HAPPENS TO BE MY FOSTER SISTER, SO IT IS MY BUSINESS! I MEAN IT! YOU GO NEAR VINNIE AND I’LL TELL ALISON WHAT YOU DID!
Gypsy: Y-you wouldn’t do that, w-would you?
Tiegan: Try me…BITCH!
*A scared Gypsy hangs up*
Tiegan: *to herself* I’m getting really good at this.
*Tiegan heads into Cherie’s room where Stephanie and Sally are*
Tiegan: You okay, Sal?
Sally: *sniffing* I heard you threatening Gypsy on the phone. Good call using Alison as bait.
Tiegan: Well, you did tell me how much Alison hates Gypsy’s guts.
*Sally manages to laugh*
Sally: She sure does.
Stephanie: Our foster sister needs a hug!
*Sally hugs both Stephanie and Tiegan*

Episode 21

The next morning (Monday), Miss Martin arrives with Jeremy Bryant - Pippa and Ian’s latest foster charge.
Jeremy: Nice place. Are you sure my temporary foster parents are nice?
Leanne: Pippa and Ian are very nice people. It’s a peaceful household.
Jeremy: I’ll just have to wait and see.
*Leanne rings the doorbell*
Pippa: That will be Leanne.
*Pippa opens the door*
Pippa: Hello, Leanne.
Leanne: Hi, Pippa and Ian. This is Jeremy Bryant.
Jeremy: Hello.
Leanne: See you in three weeks, Jeremy. *to Pippa and Ian* We’ll be in touch.
Ian: Thanks, Leanne.
*Leanne leaves*
Jeremy: Where do I sleep?
Ian: You’ll be sharing with Matthew.
Jeremy: Who lives here as in foster children?
Pippa: There’s Stephanie Mboto, Tiegan Brook, Matthew Conroy and Cherie Lancaster.
Jeremy: Did you say Cherie Lancaster?
Pippa: Yes, I did. Why is that?
Jeremy: I know her from the suburb I come from.
Ian: Interesting.
Pippa: Another foster child of mine is staying with me at the moment.
Jeremy: Cool. What’s that person’s name?
Pippa: Sally.
Jeremy: Cool.
*Stephanie and Tiegan head downstairs and notice Jeremy*
Tiegan: Oh hey.
Stephanie: You must be Jeremy.
Jeremy: I am. You are?
Tiegan: I’m Tiegan Brook and this over here is Stephanie Mboto. *points at Stephanie*
*Jeremy shakes their hands*
Jeremy: Where’s Cherie?
Stephanie: In her room. Do you know Cherie from before?
Jeremy: Yeah. She used to live in my street.
Tiegan: Cool.
*Cherie heads downstairs*
Cherie: Good morning. What’s for breakfast?
Jeremy: Hi, Cherie.
*Cherie looks at Jeremy*
Cherie: Jeremy Bryant! What are you doing here? *goes over to Jeremy and hugs him*
Jeremy: I’m going to live here for three weeks while the welfare look to find a permanent home for me.
Cherie: Oh okay. *smiles*
Pippa: Is Sal up yet?
Stephanie: Yeah, but she’s not coming down for breakfast.
Pippa: Why not?
Stephanie: She didn’t say.
Pippa: Well, I’ll put some toast aside for her when she does come down.
*Matthew comes downstairs*
Matthew: Hey dude. I’m Matthew.
Jeremy: I’m Jeremy.
*they shake hands*
Tiegan: I’m going to convince Sally to come to breakfast.
Ian: Tiegan, leave her.
Tiegan: I know what’s up with her. *heads upstairs*
(Tiegan enters Cherie’s room where Sally is brushing her hair.)
Tiegan: Sal?
Sally: Tiegan, I’m not going to breakfast. I’m on the verge of tears.
Tiegan: Still depressed about Vinnie?
*Sally nods*
Tiegan: Oh, Sal. Come here.
*Sally hugs Tiegan*
Sally: Gypsy is such a cow! I dislike her!
Tiegan: She’ll get hers. You can bet on that.
Sally: Thanks, Tiegan.
Tiegan: I’ll tell you what? Steph and I can show you what the Carrington Ranges has to offer later today. You okay with that?
Sally: I like that.
*Tiegan and Sally both smile*
(Later that morning, Tiegan is at the Carrington Plaza with Stephanie doing some shopping.)
Tiegan: Would you like to stop and get a milkshake from Donut King?
Stephanie: Sure.
Tiegan: First, I need to go to the ladies.
Stephanie: I’ll be waiting.
*Tiegan goes towards the entrance way where the toilets are before dialing Gypsy Nash’s number. It picks up on the fourth ring*
Gypsy: Hello?
Tiegan: Hey bitch! Just thought I’d give you an update on what’s going on.
Gypsy: Tiegan, what do you want?! Seriously, this is so childish!
Tiegan: Have you been keeping away from Vinnie like I told you to?
Gypsy: Well, we’re meeting up at the diner this afternoon for lunch like that’s any of your business.
Tiegan: *sighing* Well, I guess I’ll have to tell Alison what’s been going on. She’s not going to be impressed that you’re flirting with her cousin behind Sally’s back.
Gypsy: Don’t you dare!
Tiegan: Or what? You’ll get your father to arrest me? Just try me, Gypsy! I have nothing to lose! Stay away from Vinnie or you’ll regret it!
*Gypsy hangs up*
Stephanie: Who was that, Tiegz?
Tiegan: Uh, just some random prank call. Now, let’s get those milkshakes.
*Stephanie and Tiegan put their arms around each other as they walk*

When Stephanie and Tiegan arrive back home from the shops, Pippa is in the kitchen.
Tiegan: We’re back.
Pippa: How was your morning out?
Stephanie: It was great.
Pippa: That’s good. By the way, a letter came for you.
Stephanie: For me? Who is it from?
Pippa: Not sure who sent it to you.
*Stephanie opens the letter and reads it out aloud*
Stephanie: “Dear Stephanie, I just want you to know that I’m really sorry about not being there for you and Kibiri when you needed me. I know I haven’t rung you in a while, but I’ve been feeling really empty since your father died in that massacre and Kibiri was murdered. I’ve tried finding you for so many years, but that doctor’s family in England wouldn’t say where you were. I would really like for you to reconnect with me because I haven’t seen you in so many years. I hope you and God forgive me. Love always, Mum.”
Pippa: Oh sweetheart.
*Stephanie starts to cry as Pippa and Tiegan hug her*
Stephanie: Where has she been all these years?
Tiegan: Did it say where she is living?
Stephanie: Africa. Oh, this is so confusing.
*Stephanie continues to cry*

Episode 22

That night, Stephanie is in her room listening to ‘In Too Deep’ by Belinda Carlisle when Tiegan walks in.

Tiegan: Steph?

*Stephanie turns down the radio and looks at Tiegan*

Stephanie: Oh, Tiegz. I didn’t hear you come in.

Tiegan: Are you okay?

Stephanie: Not really.

Tiegan: It’s about your mother, isn’t it?

Stephanie: Yes, it is. That letter has really upset me.

Tiegan: May I ask why?

Stephanie: I haven’t heard from her in years. I thought she was dead and now she wants me to see her? That makes no sense. *cries*

*Tiegan hugs Stephanie*

Tiegan: Deep down you really want to see her, don’t you?

*Stephanie wipes away her tears and nods her head*

Stephanie: But I don’t want to go to Africa.

Tiegan: I hear it’s very hot down there.

Stephanie: Not only that, but I don’t want to go there. What if there’s another massacre there?

Tiegan: We could get your mother to come down here.

Stephanie: Good luck with that.

Tiegan: Whereabouts in Africa does your mother live?

Stephanie: It said she lives in Cape Town.

Tiegan: I see. Well, I hope you get in touch with your mother. It seems you have a lot of questions for her.

Stephanie: Thanks, Tiegz.

*Tiegan and Stephanie kiss on the cheek*

Tiegan: Good night.

Stephanie: Good night.

*Tiegan leaves the room*

(Early the next morning, Sally is on the sofa watching Aerobics Oz Style.)

*Pippa comes downstairs*

Pippa: Sweetheart, what are you doing watching TV at 6:30am?

Sally: I wanted to watch some TV.

Pippa: Turn it off, please.

*Sally turns the TV off*

Pippa: Is something bothering you?

Sally: No. Why do you ask?

Pippa: Just asking. You know I don’t like to see you upset.

Sally: Thanks.

Pippa: I’ll head back upstairs.

*As Pippa heads upstairs, Sally looks at a photo of her and Vinnie*

Sally: *to herself* Why did you kiss Gypsy for?

*Sally cries silently*

(Later, Jeremy and Cherie are out the front yard having a heart to heart.)

Cherie: So, why’d you get fostered out?

Jeremy: Mum’s drug use got out of hand.

Cherie: Oh.

Jeremy: Are you living with Pippa and Ian permanently now?

Cherie: Yes. I’m so glad to be away from Mum and Dad. I couldn’t take their physical and mental abuse anymore.

Jeremy: For a 12 year-old girl, you’ve been through a lot.

Cherie: I sure have.

Jeremy: I just wish I could stay here, but it’s only temporary.

Cherie: I know. Three weeks isn’t that long.

Jeremy: At least I got to see you. You’re like a sister to me, Cherie.

Cherie: You’re like a brother to me too, Jeremy.

*Jeremy and Cherie put their arms around each other as Tiegan storms up the driveway*

Tiegan: Some people are so rude!

Cherie: What’s wrong?

Tiegan: I just found out that I won’t be hosting the Gladiators Ashes series next year.

Cherie: So?

Tiegan: I’m just so angry that they gave the female co-hosting role to that British woman. I’m a good presenter too.

Jeremy: Maybe you’ll co-host it next year.

*Tiegan heads into the house*

Cherie: That girl is so competitive.

*Jeremy just laughs*

That afternoon, Pippa and Ian are talking about Sally.

Pippa: I’m really worried about her, Ian.

Ian: So am I.

Pippa: I found her watching Aerobics Oz Style this morning. It looked like she hardly had any sleep.

Ian: Plus, she’s hardly eating. Last night at dinner, she only had three bites of lasagne before she headed upstairs.

Pippa: That isn’t like her.

Ian: I know.

*Stephanie and Sally enter the house, having come back from the Carrington Café*

Stephanie: We’re back.

Pippa: Hello girls. How was your day out?

Sally: Good. I’m going to take a shower. I’ll be back. *runs upstairs*

Ian: Is she okay, Steph?

Stephanie: *lying* She’s just been sweating like crazy. The air conditioner at the café broke.

Pippa: I see. So, have you thought about what you’re going to do about the situation with your mother?

Stephanie: I’ve decided to get in touch with her.

Pippa: That’s great news, sweetheart. *hugs Stephanie*

Stephanie: I have a lot of questions to ask my mother and I hope she gives me some answers.

*the door knocks*

Ian: Who could that be?

*Ian opens the door to find a woman in her early 20’s with long blonde hair standing outside*

Ian: Melissa?

Melissa: It’s great to see you again…Dad! *looks angry*

*Ian and Pippa look shocked*

An awkward silence transcends as Melissa is still standing outside.

Melissa: Well, aren’t you gonna let me in?

Ian: Come in, then.

*Melissa walks inside*

Melissa: I see you’ve replaced Mum with another woman. *looks up and down at Pippa in a disgusted manner*

Pippa: Who are you?

Melissa: I’m Melissa Routledge. I happen to be Ian’s daughter.

Pippa: Oh. Well, it’s nice to meet you.

Melissa: It’s a shame that my mother died. If she was still alive, her and Dad would still be married.

Ian: Melissa, what are your reasons for being here? You haven’t spoken to me for years.

Melissa: There was a reason for that!

Ian: And what was that?

Melissa: After Mum died, you sent me away!

Ian: It wasn’t like that, love.

Melissa: You sent me to live with relatives in Whyalla and I hardly heard from you!

Ian: Love, I was grieving the loss of your mother.

Melissa: For 20 years?! Mum’s been gone for eight years, Dad!

Ian: I know, but I still called you for your birthday and Christmas.

Melissa: IT WASN’T THE SAME!

Pippa: I think I better leave.

Melissa: *rudely* Good. You do that!

Ian: Melissa! Don’t be rude to Pippa please!

Melissa: Oh, is that her name?!

Ian: I expect you to treat her with respect!

Melissa: So that’s it, huh? You’re replacing Mum. I just knew it! Aunty Sue was right when you and this Pippa woman were planning on getting married!

Ian: Love, I’m not replacing your mother. I still love her, but she’s gone now. Pippa is the woman I love now.

Melissa: I hate you. *gets teary*

Ian: Melissa…

Melissa: I HATE YOU, DAD! YOU’VE REPLACED MY MOTHER AND YOU SENT ME AWAY AFTER SHE DIED BECAUSE YOU COULDN’T STAND THE THOUGHT AT BEING A SINGLE FATHER! YOU RUINED MY LIFE AND I HATE YOU FOR IT!

Ian: Melissa, wait.

*Melissa storms out of the house in tears*

Ian: Melissa!

*Ian looks frustrated as Melissa slams the front door*

Pippa: Ian?

*Ian looks at Pippa*

Ian: I never knew my own daughter resented me, Pip.

*Pippa hugs Ian*

(Across the street, Stephanie is at Ursula’s house.)

Ursula: So, tell me more about your mother.

Stephanie: All I know about her is she fled Somalia after the massacre that killed my father. Kibiri and I stayed until she was killed in that massacre at the school she taught. That’s how I got sent to England to live with that doctor.

Ursula: That’s where we met. *smiles*

Stephanie: And became friends, that’s right. *smiles back*

Ursula: Then, I moved to London shortly before you arrived in Australia after the doctor passed away.

Stephanie: That’s right. I then lived in Brisbane for a few months in 1990 before I moved to Sydney, where I lived with another foster family until early 1996 when I moved to Summer Bay.

Ursula: Why did you leave the foster family in Sydney?

Stephanie: This girl, Heather, was being racist towards me. So, I decided to find myself a new foster home. Heather was also a compulsive liar.

Ursula: Bitch!

Stephanie: You got that right. Anyway, I’m hoping to see my long-lost mother actually. She’s got A LOT to answer for!

Ursula: I don’t blame you for being mad.

Stephanie: I’m not mad, just hurt and upset.

*Ursula puts her arm around Stephanie*

(Back at the house, Tiegan is still whining about not being chosen to host the Gladiators Ashes series.)

Tiegan: They should’ve picked me! I mean, I’m getting really good at hosting Gladiators as it is.

*Already having enough on her plate, Sally loses it*

Sally: WHO CARES IF YOU DIDN’T GET PICKED TO HOST IT, TIEGAN?! IT’S A TV SHOW FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!

Tiegan: Sally, why are you yelling at me?!

Sally: BECAUSE YOU’RE BEHAVING LIKE A SPOILED BRAT!

*Pippa races over*

Pippa: Sal, what’s going on?

Sally: Tiegan being Miss Selfish as usual!

Pippa: You’re not okay, are you?

Sally: Just leave me alone!

*Sally runs upstairs*

Tiegan: I did nothing to set her off, Pippa. I’m being honest.

Pippa: What’s going on with Sally?

Tiegan: Beats me.

Pippa: Tiegan, I have a feeling Sally’s told you and Stephanie something. I’d like to know what it is so perhaps I can resolve what’s going on.

Tiegan: I promised Sal I wouldn’t say anything.

Pippa: *sternly* Tiegan Brook.

*Tiegan sighs*

Tiegan: Sally came to stay here because she wanted to get away from Vinnie.

Pippa: Did they break up?

Tiegan: No. However, she saw him kiss Gypsy Nash at the Surf Club. They’ve been having major arguments because of it.

Pippa: Oh no.

Tiegan: That’s why she’s been so edgy.

Pippa: I’ll talk to her about it.

*Both Pippa and Tiegan look worried*

At a motel in town, Melissa is talking on her mobile.

Melissa: Years of frustration just came out when I saw Dad. I just lost it.

*the door knocks*

Melissa: Can I call you back? Someone’s at the door. All right. Bye. *hangs up*

*Melissa opens the door to find Ian standing there*

Melissa: What do YOU want?!

Ian: We need to talk, Melissa.

Melissa: How did you find out where I was staying?

Ian: You dropped the motel card as you were leaving.

Melissa: Well, I don’t want to talk to you. I said what I needed to say.

Ian: We have unresolved issues that we need to sort out.

Melissa: Like what? How you shipped me off to Whyalla after Mum’s funeral? Yeah, great father you were! *looks angry and sad*

Ian: I didn’t want you to see me struggle without your mother being gone. I was lonely for seven years and then I met Pippa. I finally found love again. She was a widow as well.

Melissa: It still doesn’t change the fact that you abandoned me! You never cared about me!

Ian: That’s not true, love.

Melissa: I bet you don’t even care that I’m pregnant and carrying your first grandchild!

Ian: What are you saying, Melissa?

Melissa: I’M PREGNANT!

*Ian looks shocked as Melissa sits on the bed*

Ian: Love, I don’t know what to say.

Melissa: Try ‘congratulations’!

Ian: Congratulations.

Melissa: Just because I’m expecting your first grandchild, doesn’t mean you’ll be seeing it after I give birth to him or her!

Ian: Melissa…

Melissa: You abandoned me after Mum died and now I’m going to do the same to YOU!

Ian: There’s no need for that, love.

Melissa: Yes, there is.

Ian: I’m sorry you feel that way.

Melissa: The damage has already been done. You’re eight years too late, Dad! Now, get out!

*Ian stands there*

Melissa: GET OUT!

*A dejected Ian leaves as Melissa starts to cry*

Episode 24

That night, Ian returns home in a depressed mood.

Pippa: Oh, hello. I was wondering where you got off to.

Ian: I went and saw Melissa.

Pippa: And?

Ian: And she wants nothing to do with me anymore.

Pippa: Oh, Ian. I’m so sorry.

Ian: I tried to do the right thing and send her to live with my sister in Whyalla because I couldn’t cope when Maureen died. I was scared, Pip.

Pippa: It’s not easy being a single parent sometimes. I know exactly how that feels. When Tom died, I thought I wasn’t going to cope fostering all the kids. But I managed just fine.

Ian: And then we met.

*Pippa smiles at him*

Pippa: Well, you’re not the only one that has problems at the moment.

Ian: I’m guessing you found out why Sally’s acting strange?

Pippa: Yes. Tiegan filled me in on what happened.

Ian: What happened?

Pippa: Sal happened to see Vinnie kiss Gypsy at the Surf Club.

Ian: Gypsy Nash?

Pippa: Yes. That’s why Sal’s come to stay. She needs a break from Vinnie.

Ian: Have you talked to her about it?

Pippa: I’m going to wait until she gets out of the shower. You, on the other hand, need some rest.

Ian: Good idea, love.

*Ian and Pippa kiss before he heads upstairs*

Sally: *from upstairs* Pippa?

Pippa: Yes, sweetheart?

Sally: Can I talk to you?
Pippa: Of course you can.

*Sally comes downstairs wearing a green nightshirt*

Sally: Pippa, I just want to say that I’m sorry for yelling at Tiegan this afternoon. It wasn’t her fault.

Pippa: Shouldn’t you be telling her that?

Sally: I did. I just wanted to explain myself.

Pippa: Go ahead.

Sally: Vinnie and I have been having problems lately. I saw him kiss Gypsy at the Surf Club and we’ve been arguing about it ever since I confronted him about it.

Pippa: Sal…

Sally: I just can’t believe he did that, Pippa.

*Pippa hugs Sally as she starts to cry*

(Upstairs, Tiegan isn’t happy when she finds out how Melissa is treating Ian.)

Tiegan: That ungrateful brat! How dare she speak to her own father like that?!

Stephanie: Calm down, Tiegz.

Tiegan: Why should I do that after our foster father is hurting so badly, Steph?!

Stephanie: I’m sure Melissa had her reasons.

Tiegan: Are you condoning her actions?

Stephanie: Well, no. I’m just pointing out that maybe she felt abandoned by Ian after he sent her to live with relatives after her mother passed away.

Tiegan: That may be the case, but it still doesn’t give her any right to treat Ian like dirt.

Stephanie: It’s none of our business. Let Ian and Melissa sort it out for themselves.

*Tiegan finds the card of the motel where Melissa is staying*

Stephanie: What’s that?

Tiegan: I’m going to give the motel a call first thing tomorrow. We’ll see how tough Melissa is once I sort her out! *walks out*

*Stephanie looks doubtful*

The next day (Wednesday), Matthew is at the youth centre with Michelle when several guys approach him.

Nahi: You Matthew Conroy?

Matthew: Yeah, I am. What do you want?

Nahi: I heard that you’re a great rugby player.

Matthew: Who told you that?

Nahi: Your girlfriend. *points at Michelle*

Michelle: We’re just friends, Nahi. *blushes*

Nahi: Right…

Matthew: Just what do you want, dude?

Nahi: We know that you’re not starting at our school until next year, but we were wondering if you would like to join the under-15s rugby team?

Matthew: For real?

Cameron: We wouldn’t be asking you if we didn’t want you to join.

Matthew: So, who are you guys?

Cameron: I’m Cameron.

Nahi: And I’m Nahi. These three guys are Jonathan, Ricky and Corey.

Ricky: Hey.

Corey: Hey man.

Jonathan: Nice to meet ya.

Matthew: And I take it you guys are on the team?

Corey: We sure are.

Matthew: I accept your offer.

Nahi: Good. *extends his hand*

*Matthew shakes Nahi’s hand*

Nahi: Hope to see you around, man.

*Nahi and his friends leave*

Matthew: Weird.

Michelle: They’re really nice guys once you get to know them, babe.

Matthew: I know. It just came as a surprise.

Michelle: You not mad at me?

Matthew: Of course not.

*they kiss*

(Meanwhile, Tiegan arrives at the motel where Melissa is staying and knocks on the door.)

Melissa: *from inside* I’m coming.

*Melissa opens the door*

Tiegan: I think it’s time we had a little talk, Melissa.

Melissa: Look, if you’re here trying to convince me to talk with my father…

Tiegan: I wouldn’t dare make you feel uncomfortable with that subject. After all, you hate him.

*Melissa looks annoyed*

Melissa: What do you want?

Tiegan: All I want to know is WHY you hate your father so much?!

Melissa: Didn’t he tell you? Oh, that’s right! He’s too ashamed to admit that he was a deadbeat of a father!

Tiegan: Did you ever stop to think that maybe your father couldn’t cope being a single parent after his wife, your mother, died? The reason he sent you to live with your Aunty Sue and her husband in Whyalla is because he wanted you to have a stable home to live in! How did you repay him?!

*Melissa doesn’t answer*

Tiegan: YOU REPAYED HIM BY CALLOUSLY REJECTING HIM, EVEN WHEN HE CALLED YOU FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY AND FOR CHRISTMAS!

Melissa: IT WASN’T THE SAME! I WANTED TO BE WITH MY FATHER, BUT HE SENT ME AWAY!

Tiegan: You know what the sad part is? You won’t even let him see his first grandchild.

Melissa: That’s none of your business!

Tiegan: And you accuse Ian of being callous?! If there’s anyone that’s callous around here, it’s YOU!

Melissa: Who the hell do you think you’re talking to?!

Tiegan: A SELF-CENTRED BRAT!

*Melissa goes to slap Tiegan, but Tiegan shoves her onto the bed!*

Melissa: Get out!

Tiegan: Don’t worry, sweetie. I’m heading out the door.

*Tiegan walks out of the room, slamming the door behind her!*

*Melissa looks despondent*

(That afternoon, Pippa is in the kitchen when the doorbell rings.)

*Stephanie comes downstairs as Pippa opens the door to find a woman and a teenage girl standing there*

Pippa: Hello, may I help you?

Keisha: Uh, yes. I’m looking for Stephanie Mboto. Is she home?

Pippa: Yes, she is. May I ask who you are?

Keisha: I’m Keisha Mboto and this is my daughter, Nivea.

Nivea: Hi.

*Stephanie looks shocked, sad and happy to see her long-lost mother*

Stephanie: Mum?

Keisha: Stephanie, come give me a hug.

*Stephanie hugs her mother*

Stephanie: How did you know where to find me?

Keisha: Your friend from across the street gave me your address.

Stephanie: And I have another sister?

Nivea: Half-sister, actually.

*Stephanie gives Nivea a hug as Pippa watches on happily*

Episode 25

Stephanie and Keisha are sitting in the living room.

Keisha: I cannot believe that I’m here with you right now. It has been so long.

Stephanie: I know, Mum.

Keisha: I’m very sorry for not being part of your life. I had my safety to think of.

Stephanie: Did you think about Dad and Kibiri at all?

Keisha: Of course I did. My heart broke when I heard that Kibiri died. I felt like losing your father all over again.

Stephanie: Where does Nivea fit in to all of this?

Keisha: I gave birth to Nivea two years after your father was killed.

Stephanie: How old is she now?

Keisha: 14.

Stephanie: So, she would’ve been 4 or 5 when Kibiri was killed.

Keisha: That’s correct, honey.

Stephanie: I’m just glad we’re together again.

Keisha: Me too.

*Stephanie and Keisha hug*

(Meanwhile, Ian is not happy after finding out from Melissa that Tiegan had a go at her.)

Ian: You had no business to confront my own daughter like that!

Tiegan: I was defending you. How she treats you is disgusting!

Ian: You shouldn’t have barged into her hotel room and started ranting and raving. You’ve probably caused her relationship with me to drift further apart!

Tiegan: Is this the thanks I get for defending you? Ian, your own daughter won’t let you see your first grandchild and he or she hasn’t been born yet!

Ian: I appreciate you defending me, Tiegan. But Melissa will sort things out with me when she is ready, not when people force the situation on her.

Tiegan: I can’t believe your defending her!

Ian: I still love my daughter. Next time, can you please stay out it?

*Pippa walks in at this point*

Tiegan: Fine.

*Ian leaves the room as Pippa goes to Tiegan and hugs her*

Pippa: I think you did the right thing, sweetheart.

Tiegan: Thanks, Pippa. At least some appreciates me defending this family.

Meanwhile, Matthew, Cherie and Jeremy are at the youth centre playing pool.

Cherie: So where’s your girlfriend, Matthew? *smirks*

Matthew: Michelle is NOT my girlfriend. We’re just the best of friends.

Cherie: Right…

Jeremy: This is actually quite a good place to hang out.

Matthew: Glad you like it, man.

*They see Nahi walk in*

Matthew: Oh, there’s that guy who wants me in the rugby team.

Jeremy: What are you going to do about that?

Matthew: I decided to join.

Cherie: That’s great news. I’m so happy for you.

Jeremy: Rad!

*Nahi walks over*

Nahi: Hey Matt.

Matthew: What’s up, Nahi?

Nahi: Just thought I’d come back and use the pool table.

Cherie: That’s great.

Nahi: *to Jeremy* I don’t think we’ve met, man.

Jeremy: Nah, we haven’t. I’m Jeremy Bryant.

Nahi: I’m Nahi.

*they shake hands*

Nahi: You play rugby?

Jeremy: Used to. If only I didn’t stuff my knee up.

Nahi: These things happen unfortunately. Well, I’ll see you guys later.

Matthew: See you around, man.

*Nahi leaves*

Cherie: He’s hot.

Matthew: I don’t think he would date a 12 year-old, Cherie.

Cherie: And what’s THAT supposed to mean?!

Jeremy: What Matthew is trying to say is that Nahi could be older than you.

Cherie: That’s true.

*Jeremy gets the eight ball inside the hole of the table*

Jeremy: Yes! Looks like I win.

*Matthew and Cherie laugh*

(That night, Nivea is looking at Stephanie’s photos on her social network page)

Stephanie: Nivea?
Nivea: Oh, hi sister.

Stephanie: Call me Stephanie or Steph. I prefer that.

Nivea: Okay, Steph.

Stephanie: Are you looking at the photos I uploaded?

Nivea: I’m sorry. I just wanted to see photos of you from over the years. I hope that’s okay.

Stephanie: That’s fine, Nivea.

*Nivea points at a photo of Stephanie with Josh Anderson and a blonde haired girl taken in 1993*

Nivea: Who are they?

Stephanie: Oh, that’s Josh Anderson. He’s the one with the cute smile.

Nivea: I noticed. Who’s the blonde?

Stephanie: Oh, that’s Jodie Cooper. She went to Hartley High.

Nivea: Did you go to that school when you were living in Sydney?

Stephanie: No, I went Civic High. I did go and visit Hartley High sometimes on a Thursday when we had school sport.

Nivea: Awesome.

Stephanie: So, tell me about yourself.

Nivea: I love the colour blue, I enjoy listening to pop music and I’m a huge fan of the LA Lakers.

Stephanie: You watch the NBA?

Nivea: Yeah, I watched it all the time in Africa.

Stephanie: They air it here on Southern Cross Ten late at night every Friday and Saturday.

Nivea: Cool.

Stephanie: I’m glad we’ve finally got a sisterly relationship.

Nivea: Same here.

(Meanwhile, Sally is on the phone with Vinnie.)

Sally: Vinnie, I need to talk to you about something. Look, I don’t want to fight with you! I just want to say something to you. Please, Vinnie! I think it’s best that we break up. Vinnie, you know why I’m breaking up with you. You can have Gypsy for all I care. I’ll find someone else that will love me for who I am. Don’t try calling me either. Goodbye, Vinnie.

*Sally hangs up the phone as Pippa enters the room*

Pippa: I’m sorry, Sal.

Sally: Don’t be. I wanted to be the one to make that decision. Vinnie broke my heart by cheating on me with Gypsy.

Sally: Sweetheart, come here.

*Sally hugs Pippa*
