Most Popular Character

I have to say I actually rather liked Joey as a character even though her storyline wasn't the best(it wasn't entirely without merit but it was deeply flawed).I always thought she was more interesting before they had her declare her dying love to Charlie five minutes after meeting her.She had a rather sweet friendship with Aden which I'd have liked to have seen developed, we saw a different side of him and it could have resulted in a genuinely different male/female friendship that for once wouldn't have been wrecked by having them hop into bed.

So, two of my picks in the 6-10 group, one to go.I don't think I even voted for Donald last time but he went straight in at number 2 this time.Watching the 7Two repeats has left me convinced he's one of the most complex characters in the show's history, a superb mixture of authoritarian and compassionate. And I couldn't not vote for Alf, in a way he is Home and Away and I do appreciate the way he's suddenly slotted into that wise old man role.(Especially since everyone else who hands out advice, Irene included, always seems to get it spectacularly wrong.)

Belle...It's odd how my opinion of characters seems to be the opposite to the general opinion. Some characters, like Ruby, I start liking at the moment the majority seem to turn against them.Others, like April, seem to become popular at the exact moment I find I can't stand them.Belle, sadly, fell into the latter category.I never really bought that she fell in love with someone she'd held in contempt not so long previous for any other reason than "it was convenient for the writers" and it marked the point where the "golden couple" seemed to be less than the sum of their parts. It's a shame that That Window, which was such a big motif for Nick and Jade's relationship in the first half of the decade, now seems to be synonymous with Aden's "stalking=love" behaviour.

So, I think I know who the top five are but I'm not entirely sure of the order...

Now we get to the interesting part of the list.

For me Belle was one half of the last of the "golden couples ". I haven't really invested in any of the pairings since. I realise Belle did wander through a number of relationships before settling on Aden but she did seem to do it with much more believability than those since. She also made the bedroom window famous as a romantic symbol. Others have used it since but not with nearly as much style.

Neither have I (I am a bit behind, but... mid 2011). There were a few parts with this relationship I didn't like and I wish they would have done differently, but still I think it was a really good build relationship. What I really liked about it was that it was about two very strong characters they were really well played both of them, and it was character developement through all their storylines. It had a great build up, building Adens character and then they had a slow building. They had a lot of really difficult issues to work with, some of them were so serious that they could have broken a solid married couple. But even if they split up and started to see others several times, they always came back and worked through their issues and came out stronger. It is not like a lot of the other couples of the last years (except from Tony/RAchel). It's now more about constant nagging and break ups, and add some triangles and then forgetting about their real issues.

Hm. But I think Aden made that window famous, not Belle.. . he was the one climbed through it. I liked that thing though. Yes I do remember Nick and Jade, but I don't think this window meant that much to them, I didn't think it was any special back then. They were more about school storylines which suited more for those characters as they were meant to be younger, and thats the reason why I liked them, they were very young and innocent without being fake sugarsweet.

I liked Joey in the beginning, the actress was good and the storyline was interesting. They started it to hint about a person who because of her sexuality had several problems with her brother and with others... she wasn't accepted for who she was. And I think that they should have worked with that issue, it would have been a great storyline, and then they could have given her a girfriend in the end. But instead they put Charlie into the mix and everything became about Charlie and her insecurities. Joey became forgotten. And by the end she was "sent" away from the bay, it felt like that she was banned because of who she was. And after a little period the storyline about Charlies background/the rape was used as an excuse for Charlies sexual and relationships problems... The whole storyline gave me bad taste in my mouth. It was like they were ashamed of doing a storyline about being gay, but just used it for PR. It was a bit discussed on a Norwegian forum when this storyline aired about 20 months ago. I think it is strange that this didn't caused any troubles with the gay organisations down under (up here the show isn't big enough). I know a few christian organisations reacted on it in Oz... but still... that storyline was aired in 2009... not in the 1920's...

The window thing didn't get laboured to the extent it did with Aden, in a desperate attempt to make something slightly creepy seem like a big romantic motif, but it was established, from that brilliant "What are you doing and when did you get your hair cut?" moment, that whenever Jade wanted to see Nick, often when he was depressed about something or when they were having troubles, she went through that window. It was hugely symbolic that when Nick and Jade were at their real low point near the end of his time on the show, Kit started using that window to see Nick, it demonstrated the rift between them that their special thing was being used by someone else.

I'm really pleased Fisher has made the Top 10. He was always going to be on my list (If I'd done it this year <_< !!). I would personally put him ahead of Alf, Irene and Morag, but of course they are more recognisable to current viewers.

Not got much to say about the latest update really. Charlie arrived in 2008, which is the same year Aden became a main character. Both Charlie and Aden started off as strong, well written characters and gradually went downhill.

Edit to add:

I've just realised there's a (current) character who I'm sure people are bound to have voted for, who hasn't actually appeared in the poll yet, which means he must be in the top 3. Although I personally wouldn't have placed him there, he's by far the only character in the current show who deserves to be anywhere near that high. I only hope he beats Brax to 2nd place (with Sally being first).

Yup. The weird one is missing.... hmmmm. I wouldn't have thought that he was so popular I've never been found of this character, I think he is very limited as a character even if he is ok sometimes. But I have never understood the hype around this character. He isn't believable in the more dramatic storylines, but he is better than his partner, I feel that they are both been portrayed as too young - they are meant to be 18, but feel far younger. I wonder if he's going to beat Brax or Sally.... He is stronger character than Brax though.

Aden is one of my favorites, he was best in the beginning yes and there were several holes in his storyline but still very good at H&A standards, until the last 6 weeks of his stint, when the writers decided to destroy him completely, I have actually never forgiven them for that and I never will... I became aware of how different we are (cultural differences) when it comes how differently we are viewing sensitive topics, what a sensitive topic is, and how it should be treated. But I am a bit suprised that he is number 4 after more than 2 years since he left the show down under and in UK.

Never liked Charlie, and I totally disagree that she came off as a strong character, she has never been close to be well written, and is very far away from being well acted/played. I am actually very sorry for Rebecca Breeds because she has been in Esther Andersson's shadow for the whole time, even she is far better as an actress.

For me Charlies journey has been a completely mess from day one. She is actually one of my least favs ever, together with April. She was meant to be strong and selfless, but from day one she came off as extremely weak, self obsessed and unlikeable. And then she started to act worse and worse..., She was far more corrupt as a cop than Jack was, just like Angelo. She totally destroyed the storyline about Joey, was horrible in the mother/daughter storyline, she didn't respect Jack at all, she slept with his murderer. She messed with evidences, she treated Roman badly and then it was made that he was the one that was horrible, she never really seem to care about Ruby when she needed her the most, everything ws about her. And then she started to date the towns worst criminal.

So pleased Charlie didn't win  I was totally convinced she would.

I've got one of my choices left,I bet they won't win but at least it'll be a bit more of a surprise for me now! :P
