2000 Episode Discussion

I don't remember it being this long before the Sutherlands were added to the opening credits, but obviously it must have seemed even longer at the time.

Yes, I thought the same. I've been assuming they will be added when Edward and Peta leave...?

They are indeed, possibly as early as Thursday since their departure's imminent.(Ken gets taken off at the same time, even though he hasn't left yet.)

To be fair, 2000 Leah probably was ditzy enough to just not have time to tidy up.

Real Ailsa!I was convinced her first scene back was with Don, think I'm getting confused with the order I first saw the episodes in.That was a nice chat with Shauna anyway and good that Shauna realised she'd misjudged Vinnie(she seemed genuinely shocked by how depressed he was)and so did Leah.I'd completely forgotten that first kiss between Sally and Luke, thought the first time was when he left. She's being surprisingly level-headed about it and good that he's told her to see a proper specialist.I think that's the first time I've heard it said it was meant to be her father's mother she lived with after her parents died, that's probably been retconned post-2008 and I always felt there must have been some confusion in her family history for them not to have found out about Miles earlier.

The Sutherlands continue to get all the best laughs.I loved the way Jade and Shelley were trying not to crack up during Rhys and Kirsty's spat.Rhys' rant of "We've only been here a couple of weeks and you've smashed Mr.Fisher's car, Nick's wound up in hospital...and now Alf Stewart says you tried to kill him!" was topped for best comic moment seconds later when Kirsty rants about Nick and Jade helpfully notes "She actually really likes him."Rhys' weary "Which one was it this time?" when Alf complains about his kids was great too.Do feel a bit sorry for Kirsty, it seems every time she makes an effort with Nick he gets defensive and Jade blames her.(And she's definitely protesting way too much on that score.)Also interesting just how protective Jade is of Nick already, feels like there's more than one seed being sown here...

Of course when they bring back group shots in 2004 they're equally packed.(Rhys, Beth, Max, Henry and Matilda. In one shot.Yeah.)And as for the 2007 picture frames, try working out who's there and who isn't without freeze frame.I swear Beth was gone for weeks before I noticed.

Anyway...we said goodbye to Edward and Peta, the first departure of the Channel 5 era.Bit bog standard but a decent number of characters turned up to say goodbye to them and I did like the final moment between Joel, Peta and Gypsy.I remember someone talking about that last shot of Don on his own in the Diner a short while back but in context it's pretty hard to feel sorry for him when he's being such an arrogant snob towards Joel, June's influence doesn't seem to have lasted long.Judith lying to him was a bit unfair though.

The Sutherlands continue to get all the good comedy moments, mostly Rhys with his "I'm building up to it" after failing to evict Les, his look at Shelley when he realises she's volunteered him to go out into a storm to look for him and the brilliant "If anything happens to that man..."/"...I'll never hear the end of it" exchange.Kirsty comes close to matching him with her "You've heard Dani sing.Would you get over it?"Using Tasha as a plot device to put the brakes on the inevitable Will/Dani hook-up, and having Dani go back to being a brat towards Will in the process, is just frustrating. It feels very strange seeing Joel around at the same time as the Sutherlands since it feels like they're basically his replacements, especially Rhys.I can remember working out what happened with the caravans the first time round but more on that later, although I think everyone else has probably guessed as well.

Watching this Colleen/Les storyline, I'm left thinking that, while I was never a fan of the character, Colleen does work better when she's actually got a storyline rather than just wandering through episodes being nasty to everyone.Continuity's still a bit iffy:Colleen implies she was brought up Lance on her own when her husband left her in, when in fact he'd already grown up and moved out of home(in fact, I think he inadvertently gave Les/Stan the money to do a runner).Odd how the memory plays tricks, I kept thinking Les went missing during the mudslide until I realised that was a lot later.

Whilst I very much subscribe to Nick and Jade as soul mates, I became very fond of Nick and Kirsty during the last repeat of these episodes and they're still damn cute. That scene of her getting him to put his arm round her was a nice bookend to her warning him not to hold her hand a few episodes earlier. And I loved all the stuff in the last episode, with Dani earning more bad marks by having a go at them only for Kirsty to walk past her blissfully loved up after their goodbye kiss...

And, I believe, the last mention of Irene's now long-forgotten psychic abilities.

They seem to have rushed through the Ailsa/Shauna storyline a bit which makes the change of actors even more jarring.I don't think there's been any mention of them being mother and daughter since Judy Nunn came back, Ailsa's just being maternal-but-not-really-that-maternal towards her. They really should have looked at the scripts for that week and made an effort to include some moments re-establishing the relationship and building them up to it.I found myself on Harry's side calling time on Shauna and found her claim he'd regret it somewhat arrogant and deluded.(Ironically, though, she's right!)

They really did make a huge effort to delve into the characters pasts in this season - Eve Smith turning up, Ailsa/Shauna and visiting her childhood home, Sally's non-wedding, Les Smart's return, Joel returning to the family home with flashbacks, Edward Snr's video, Harry's mother arriving - and that's just in the space of about 6 weeks! Really did feel like quite a treat.

Earlier in the year Greg returned to see Sam for the first time too and Celia returned from Africa.

And Lance came back for Sally's 21st birthday party.

The show seemed to revisited some of its past before 2000. What with Adam's stint in 1999 and the story about a film of A Crest of a Wave being made. And a girl coming in it who was playing the "Bobby" character.

Okay, so...I thought it was obvious Alf was behind the patch-up job on the caravans, given he was basically wearing a sign saying "I'm guilty" round his neck, so why didn't Ailsa pick up on it?Instead she's unpleasant to Joel and doesn't even seem to apologise when she finds out it's undeserved, being too busy giving self-righteous lectures to Alf.Then Joel loses sympathy by being a jerk towards Gypsy and Harry.Throw in Don being offensive towards Judith and there were an awful lot of characters in that episode who came across as unlikeable.Vinnie gives Shauna a brilliant "You suck" speech in the middle of one of her self-centred rants too.

Les' turnaround seemed a bit abrupt. The previous night he seemed to be pretty keen on resuming marital activities with Colleen, so why did he look like a deer in the headlights and fake a bad back when she suggested a "lie down"?Did he think she wouldn't take him up on it, is it the idea of paying for a second wedding that's put him off or has he started getting his services elsewhere?

Another brilliant scene between Dani and Kirsty, once again I'm finding myself loving the sisterly bond between these two.Gave a bit of motivation to Dani as well, although that incident will turn into a continuity nightmare by the time Dylan shows up.(Remember Dani saying Kirsty and Jade were asleep upstairs because there'll be a test later.)

And...Brodie!I guess her introduction was to show us that the Drop-In Centre is basically replacing the foster theme, in that even though there's no foster home in the show anymore they're still helping troubled teens.Brodie does blur the edges pretty quickly though.

Does anyone know what exactly was wrong with Judy Nunn? I don't know if it's just me, but does her voice sound a little off from normal in the Diner scenes? The exterior ones are ok.

Why did Rhys (or presumably the surveyor they had) not pick up on the poorly repaired vans when they were looking around the park?

I thought the same about Brodie.

I wondered that about Rhys' absence that night, but then realised that it was the after Shelley miscarried with Joe that he slept with Angie, which was a different time, I think.

Yes, because they'd shortened the theme again by that point.

I think Judy had something like acute appendicitis, because I remember it being said she had a lot of difficulty filming the mudslide scenes, which weren't very long after her return, due to the fact that her abdomen was still very tender. I think some of her diner scenes in the last few episodes must have been her on first few days back, with the exteriors shot a while later, because they were kept very short, with her first appearance back being her popping up and saying about three words at the end of someone else's scene, which makes me think they were easing her back in gently, and which may well be the reason why the Ailsa/Shauna storyline and in particular Ailsa's return to her family home was somewhat hastily completed during Nancy's stint, so as not to overwork Judy or have her portray too much negative emotion, which, although only acting, can still severely drain an actor.

I thought it was a back injury? All this episode discussion makes me wish I could watch and join in too!
