2000 Episode Discussion

Incidentally, that continuity snarl I was going to point out if we got far enough:

Dani tells Kirsty that the father of a child Shelley had had taken into care turned up at the house and attacked her while Kirsty and Jade were asleep upstairs.Okay so far.We later learn Shelley was pregnant with a baby boy, Joe, at the time and as a result of the attack he was stillborn.I think Shelley even mentions how old he'd be if he'd lived and it makes him two or three years younger than the twins. It's drip fed over quite a few months but it all ties up.

And then 2002 comes along and we're told that the night Joe was stillborn, Rhys went out and got drunk, slept with Angie and supposedly conceived Dylan.Which means Dylan should have been born about nine months later, which means he should be about 3-4 years younger than Jade and Kirsty.Instead, they're all about the same age and I think Dylan's even a few months older.

When did Pippa have another baby?

She was mentioned as being pregnant in early 1999 so presumably later that year.

Really enjoyed Ken's death and aftermath storyline, it was well written. It's been uploaded in full as a special episode on the tube without the audio issues. Even though it seemed to get tied up rather quickly, it didn't feel like they missed anything out. I think Hayley wasn't focused on as much but that's probably because Rebecca wasn't the best actor, especially in emotional scenes at that stage (Imo).

Just touching on Mike Perjanik's music again because watching these 2000 episodes has reminded me of how well composed some of the pieces are. My particular favourite is the one played when Will reads out his best man speech at Ken's grave. Such a bitter sweet underscore, beautifully composed. I wonder how long it took him to compose those big underscores...

I think Hayley seemed to deal with it best at first, then a month or two down the line when everyone else had got their heads straight she suddenly went off the rails in a kind of delayed reaction. We saw the beginnings of that with her causing trouble for Mitch and Brodie.

Thanks redranger, i didn't realise Pippa had another child, I didn't watch the show for 4 years after it moved to channel 5 and I don't think Pippa mentioned it in her stints from 2005-09.

Great post Alex, Lynne Mcgranger was brilliant in that storyline. They really should give her more to do in the current show because she's an amazing actress.

Another thing I've come to appreciate is the episode endings. At the time I hated them because they did away with the traditional freeze frame. But they are susbtantially better than the curent cut to black and immediate promo. In a way Mike Perjanik's music works better this way than with the freeze frame because it builds up as screen fades to black and then "hits the spot" as the water crashes onto the screen for the credits. It's quite classy and gives you time to think about what's just happened before the theme song starts (I think there used to be a promo between that bit and the theme song but obviously not in the UK versions).

Freeze-Frame, cool as it was, became a bit passe by the late 90s.

No, unfortunately. Hence the disappointment in Channel 5 ditching them.

(if there were alternate unofficial sources then they cannot be discussed on here anyway)
