I still think Ken's axing was a big mistake. His presence may have made those kids of his bearable and nobody's really made Irene that happy since.

Beside Barry and Lou :) To bad all her boyfriends ends up dying or going to jail. Did Irene and Ken get married?

It was a shame to lose him, but it was Anthony Phelan's choice to leave. Bevan Lee mentioned it in the Q&A we did with him back in 2004:

I also thought it was a shame to lose Ken, Hayley, Nick and Will's father. Unfortunately the actor wanted to leave. I felt he could have settled in to being a regular in the Bay. Thankfully he's agreed over time to come back and do a number of very effective guest appearances as Ken's ghost. The actor is a successful theatre actor and has performed in a lot of plays since leaving the show.

yes - or a more simple idea would be not to introduce Shelley and Rhys at all and simply have Joel and Natalie deciding to foster, after some empty nest syndrome with Gypsy and Tom leaving home. The three girls could have been introduced that way and it would have been more in-keeping with the original theme of the show.

I agree about Joel he had potential to be a long term member of cast. I found him very likeable with a lot of sides to his character. I always felt Natalie #2 would have been excellent with something really gritty and dramatic to do, show a different side to her than the sweet and soft mother and wife.

This would have been the best choice I think too. The Nash family had the potential to become a classic H&A family and remain in the show today. Imagine if they had, they would have quite a few long term characters still in the show. I could imagine Joel and Nat keeping the foster family theme going with Gypsy and Joel in and out over the years.

I think that both Barry and Lou seemed like they were in the very early stages of a relationship (mostly due to the poor writing) compared to Ken who, because of good writing, seemed to really have a strong bond with Irene and a far more complex dynamic (with their shared alcoholism) compared to Barry and Lou. It just made their relationship far more engaging and real.

No - they were only engaged. Irene was trying on the wedding dress when Joel came to the door to tell her Ken had died.

Do you think that if Lou didn´t die he could have still been a main and Irene´s husband? I liked that character, why would the writers give her another love of life only to snap it away after a few weeks?

I doubt Irene and Lou would have lasted what with Donna hanging around like a stale fart.

There was something with Hyde but it wasn't even close to what she had with Ken.

I really disliked that Donna character, she was some young blonde that Lou didn´t wanna have anything to do with but she kept hazzling him. I still remember that creepy time when Irene was found and we saw flashbacks of Lou being shot. Well none of them come close to that silly relationship she had with that gitar teacher in 2012, that guy was just a idiot.

But if Joel and Natalie were axed wouldn't they leave at the same time.

The Natalie actress quit and Joel was axed later.

I think Shelley would have been a good Pippa replacement had the viewers given her a chance.
