1994 Episode Discussion

Michael praises Jack only to find Ailsa's dress in the wardrobe.

Damian was trying so hard to act cool and not tell the Stewarts that Jack ruined the dress that they thought was stolen.

Hmm that Gerry guy seemed a bit senile forgetting that his wife  died and dropping in on Irene and Irene lets Tug take the charger just to get rid of Gerry.

New font in the opening  title.

Spoiler

We are a few weeks off from Selina returning and Sarah's dad appears soon as well.

By the storylines I've seen, I think Home and Away would be considered more realistic than Neighbours in the 90s.

20+yrs later it seems like the other way round!:D

Gerry, Madame Irena's first customer, is played by Syd Conabere who was David Palmer's father in Sons and Daughters. Also, I found it frustrating how Sarah was so carefree about dumping Roxy as coach and went straight to Irene with the offer to take over first, before speaking to Roxy. Yet when the same thing happened to her and Angel about being captain she went nuts.

And let's not forget he was Dan Ramsay (Madge's father) on Neighbours.

One of the good things about The Early Years (despite the obvious - being able to enjoy classic episodes) is being able to compare the attitudes of yesteryear with today.

It was interesting to see the "cross dressing" storyline from a 2015 perspective when, thankfully, we're all a little more informed and less ignorant. Thankfully for Jack he doesn't really cross dress, because a reaction like that from Michael could have been very harmful. I suspect Michael's attitude to the whole thing was written largely for comedy reasons (likewise Ailsa, who tried to be understanding, but was amusingly uncomfortable, when IMO 1988 Ailsa wouldn't have blinked an eye). Pippa was the only one who acted as I'd have expected, mainly sitting on the fence, only coming off to tell Michael that it "wouldn't be the worst thing".

The actual worse thing, was Michael asking Damien if Jack likes boys. Cross dressing and sexuality are two entirely separate things which, occasionally, overlap. Seeing a dress in a guy's wardrobe and assuming he is gay because of it, is definitely something that couldn't be written today without the show being ridiculed. In those days, I suspect a lot of viewers accepted it as a reasonable assumption.

Poor rob, what a waste of a good spag bog!

i found the cross dressing reaction interesting too, these days things have gone too far the other way, can't comment on anything without fear of offending someone, gotta love political correctness......not

Michael is a blokey bloke, made obvious by his attitude towards this issue, and also his hurt male pride when pip got a job cleaning the surf club.

silly Damian cheating in the exam, never thought he would do something like that.  Wonder if he will own up?

Its always the quiet ones isnt it? I'd never thought Damian would do something like this. And Fisher was just saying he has respect for them but now...hope he owns up.

I'm really liking Rob at the moment, he's too good for Roxy I think.

Good on Pippa for sprucing herself up a bit and lose some kilos! :P

It certainly didn't help that Pippa was always dressed in baggy clothes back in the day. When Vanessa Downing played her she was dressed in more fitted clothes. - Even after Christopher was born. When Debra took over she still looked ok but gradually the clothes got baggier! This is perfectly highlighted in her 1994 credits shot with Michael.

Spoiler

I've missed a few episodes so have we had the episode where Pip falls off her bike due to her tent like clothes?:P
