1745 sees the mysterious sudden appearance of a second sofa at Summer Bay House. I have always wondered how a family of 7 (8 including Pippa's father) managed to live with only room for 2 people on the sofa.

Spoiler

Reminds me of when Irene's house went through an overnight makeover and it was all done and dusted in the fastest renovation works ever c1996.

Some of these 1995 episodes being shown on The Early Years I seem to remember being broadcast on UK screens in about Nov/Dec 1995.

I have a feeling the second half of 1995 is going to be better than the first half judging by July's episodes.

I feel like we've really seen the show hit its stride by July, and it was already great in the first half. As much as I love 1994, I think there are a few things that set 1995 above it. The main thing being I think it's lost its sense of being a bit predictable which for me is one of the downfalls of the early seasons and plagued quite a few of the early 90s years.

All the stories seem to be engaging and interesting at the moment. Marilyn's return has worked out great in the long run, as I thought it would; when Don asked her to go and pick up the new Maths teacher from the bus stop, I never expected it to be Steven (even though I he was due to return in 1995) and I imagine it was a fantastic surprise for viewers at the time.

As with losing its sense of predictability, I think another strength in 1995 is its depth and believability. Although I love 1990-1993, I feel the living arrangements were somewhat unbelievable and seemed to become more and more fragmented and disjointed (around the time Blake and Karen arrived). Admittedly this is something I criticise the modern show for. By 1995 the show loses its sense of 'one teen out, one teen in' at the Ross house - with Steven's return, and the show's general willingness to delve into its past with Marilyn's return, Bobby's fridge moment and Bert's return, Michael and Pippa do feel like they're really foster parents. Obviously we still have such living arrangements as Curtis and Selina but for me Summer Bay House is the lynchpin of the show and that household has to be front and centre (and believable) for the show to be enjoyable as a whole.

Mid 1995 and the teens are cemented as classic characters. Shannon and Selina both went through rough patches before hitting their stride IMO - but now Selina is out of the pregnancy storyline, and once Shannon had the chance to shine in the brilliant anorexia storyline, they came out much stronger characters. Curtis and Selina's relationship, which started out quite boring, has turned around quickly to become one of the more fun partnerships. I like the conflict they had between Don and Alf's disagreement, and the natural conflicts which come from their characters in general.

The anorexia storyline had some brilliant writing for Pippa and Shannon; particularly the part where Shannon pushes Pippa away thinking she doesn't care, and Pippa admitting she's closer to Sally because she's known her for so many years.

Bert returning is a highlight - he works excellently in the Ross household, this is a dynamic we haven't seen there since Floss and Neville left in 1989. It makes Pippa feel more real too.

Irene's ex-husband returning has been great too. The scriptwriting has been flawless - loved Marilyn's line to Irene about Murdoch being a 'ship passing in the night' to which Irene replies 'more like a ship that sunk without trace'

Shane and Angel were at risk of becoming boring but this new career for Angel has seen them face some new challenges - it doesn't feel predictable either.

The show is 1st class at the moment.

The 2nd sofa has been making appearances for a couple of months now, but yeah it was always a bit ridiculous before that.

Really  interesting and engaging storylines going on at the moment. TYE is great right now. I look forward to each episode and it's the only show worth watching. On free to air tv anyway.

Today's episode was creepy-the hand of you-know-who (yes I know who the intruder is) sliding out of the closet door like that.

And Mud harassing Selina. Really hope she tells Irene soon and hope Irene will feel really bad! I'm not liking Irene right now.

I laughed when Alf does a complete 360 on the motocross comp. My cousin is actually into the whole dirt bike racing thing.  I'm not sure if that's the same thing though.

And it's nice to see Ailsa back to her normal self. I didn't like her return. She seemed so cold.

Could not of put this better myself! You summed up very nicely what I was going to say!

Anyone noticed that's it's now officially stopped being referred to as HAA TEY and now just simply called Home and Away?

The hypocrisy and double-standards when it comes to Selina are downright astounding. One episode after playing her role in hounding and humiliating Irene's ex-husband from Summer Bay without so much as giving him the benefit of a hearing, let alone take him to counselling or mediation sessions, asking why he was so horny around Selina, Irene is skyting on about how "wonderfully mature" Selina is — so much so that she has given her and Curtis the green light to do what she likes and treat the Beach House as their own private brothel.

God only knows what Curtis sees in Miss Hoity-Toity Cook. She bullies him out of his motorbikes, refuses to let him help her get out of being alone with "mud" because she thinks of herself as a "strong, independent woman", and is generally cold unlike the beautiful, adventurous Laura who had too much fun to stay alive.

Honestly, I question whether Miss Cook even deserves to have a boyfriend. There is less conflict between her and Shannon. She and Shannon could have had a relationship like how Shannon and Mandy would have been. They're like Siamese twins.

Yes I'm sorry for the rant, but Madam Selina (and whoever created and wrote her very character) really has got a lot to answer for!
