I think that's because it's the beginning of a new year, I always feel like this at the beginning of a new year. It's like I feel as though I should celebrate and everything but then I think.. well, why? I don't know. It's not a bad kind of weird, just weird! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think that that is how "weird" works; it is an explicable feeling that cannot be classified as either good or bad. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That's very true. If ever I say I feel weird, people just presume it to be bad when that's not actually what I mean. I might give them your definition next time! As for my stepmum, good. She feels like my parent. And she has been a very good mother to me so yeah, ok that's good! Just wasn't sure if that would come across a bit disrespectful or not. Quote
MarMar Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 It's not that I miss my parents, I just get that feeling. My dad's dead, but I live with my mum. Quote
Ashirr-Leigh Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 I can't think of why you might be getting that feeling so I know that's not of much help. Quote
chatter box Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 Feeling "weird" is perfectly OK. I think part of the problem...although I hate the word problem...is that society, via the media, family and friends, tries to tell us how we should be feeling far too often. You know the sort of thing...."you must be so happy"...."You must be gutted"...."You must feel so upset" ...etc.....and when we don't feel anything of the sort then we start to get worried, and even to think there is something wrong with us. In most cases what we feel, or don't feel, is actually fairly normal. It's only when these thoughts take over and dominate our thinking and our lives that there is...and here's that word again...a problem. The New Year is a time of change...and surprise surprise most human beings don't actually like change that much. The new year focuses our thoughts on what might have been and on what might be...it can be exciting, and it can be scary. In reality Jan 1st is just another day on the calender. Life must have been so much easier in this respect before they invented calenders! Also if you are a bit of an insomniac, the night can be quite a lonely place, as everyone else is getting some sleep, so that feeling of missing someone seems perfectly reasonable in the circumstances. I doubt there is a person alive who hasn't had intrusive or scary thoughts at some time in their lives. If you talk to a group of friends..and they are being honest...most will tell you they have at some time or another thought about doing all sorts of awful things....it does not mean they are mad or are going to turn in Hannibal Lecter! Lots of people have "friends" or voices in their heads with whom they converse...it does not mean they are psychotic...most are completely sane. ASh...you definition of weird is great...its not good or bad...it's just different...and there is nothing wrong with that. I don't think its disrespectful to love your step mum . She cares for you and from what you have said she loves you a lot. I have 2 adopted teenage "sons" who are my husbands nephews...their parents having died a number of years ago. They call us Mum and Dad but that does not mean they love or loved their parents any the less. They call our daughter...who is 2 and a half... their sister, and she winds them round her little finger. Families are not only about blood ties but about ties of love. Stop worrying about what others think...and go with the flow...its OK to feel, or not to feel... ...what ever it is that you feel... Quote
Ashirr-Leigh Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 That was a great post, chatterbox. You've explained everything perfectly, to me anyway, and I think you're right that there's always a certain pressure to feel a specific way. Anyway, thanks for that. Quote
MarMar Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 I know I don't feel this way because of the media, the new year or anything like that. Quote

Sometimes I spend too much time pondering what might have been and should have been... Like you said beachbabe, life is too short! Quote
