I'm an Applehead and a widget is a small program which runs in the Dashboard (an application which runs in the background... Dunno how to explain. Too tired). You can download widgets. I've currently got a clock, calculator, converter (currency, temperature, length, volume etc), iTunes-widget, dictionary/thesaurus etc.

Sorry feeling quite random tonight! I am exhausted though because I climb a mountain this morning early, it wasn't pleasent because I hate mornings, sun and mountains! I have never heard of bamboo knitting needles!
