Lost reappears

Sydney

July 4, 2005

It may have disappeared for a short while, but Seven's blockbuster show Lost has reappeared at the top of the ratings ahead of its season finale.

The show about castaways trying to survive on an island after a plane crash grabbed two million viewers last week, making it the most watched program for the period June 26 to July 2.

Despite Lost's success, the week belonged to Nine, which captured 30.5 per cent of the audience, compared to Seven's 26.4 per cent.

Lost beat a recapped special of Seven's other blockbuster program, Desperate Housewives, the second most popular show of the week.

Desperate Housewives attracted an audience of 1.9 million people.

The season finale of both shows will screen in August.

Seven had three other programs in the top ten - real-life shows Border Security and Medical Emergency and its Sunday News.

Nine screened four shows which featured in the ten most watched programs of the week - 60 Minutes, Sunday's National Nine News, Who Wants To Be a Millionaire and Friday Night Football.

Network Ten grabbed 22.6 per cent of viewers, while the ABC attracted 15.8 per cent and SBS took 4.7 per cent of the market.

Nine also dominated last night's ratings, its news and current affairs helping it claim victory.

Sunday's National Nine News and 60 Minutes were the two most popular shows of the night, with the news bulletin gaining 1.9 million viewers.

They beat Ten's live Big Brother eviction, Nine's new reality show Skating on Thin Ice and Nine's coverage of the Live 8 concerts.

Who will die?

One of the survivors has used up all their lifelines ? but which one?

Living on a mysterious, deserted island in the middle of nowhere is a perilous business ? just ask the survivors of flight 815, who seem to fight for their lives on a weekly basis.

If they?re not being chased by weird, killer monsters or being terrorised by tropical polar bears, they?re fending off sinister kidnap and murder attempts from a mysterious band of ?others?.

This week, TV WEEK can confirm that one of our favourite survivors will die. Yes ? we were just as shocked. Call us sentimental, but we really don?t see why someone has to leave so soon.

?When you are doing a show like Lost, which demands that you constantly remind the audience of the life-or-death nature of the characters? predicament while crafting a long-term, epic narrative, you sadly have to kill people from time to time,? says one of the show?s writers, Javier Grillo-Marxuach.

Fair enough. But we?re still not happy. So, who will it be? Will Jack die during a blood transfusion? Will Boone succumb to his injuries, or will Claire quietly pass away while having her baby? See if you can work it out?

JACK

He?s already survived a pretty horrific injury, but this week, Jack may end up succumbing to a wound sustained while attempting to save a fellow passenger.

As Boone lies at death?s door, Jack decides that the only way to save him is to chance a risky blood transfusion. With the help of Sun (Yunjin Kim) and a nifty needle fashioned from the spike of a sea urchin, Jack begins the lengthy and difficult process. But will he end up giving more than just his blood?

As the transfusion continues, Jack feels his strength slowly draining away. It?s during this feverish state that we see flashbacks to his previous life and you?ll never guess what we learn ? Jack was once married!

CLAIRE

Talk about bad timing ? this week, Claire (Emilie de Ravin) finally goes into labour, at the very same moment that Boone is brought back to camp.

Unable to help the pregnant survivor, Jack gives Kate (Evangeline Lilly) instructions so she can help Claire deliver her baby.

There?s no hot water or towels on this island, and Kate and Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) are forced to try to deliver Claire?s baby in what looks to be a crop of brambles!

Ever since we saw Claire?s flashbacks, we?ve suspected that her child was something special.

First a psychic told her she must raise the baby herself, then Ethan (William Mapother) kidnapped her in an attempt to nab her child. Lost fans have even suggested that the baby may not be human!

?I?ve heard that it?s not a baby,? says Emilie, who admits she?s had a chuckle at some of the predictions. ?What do they think it is ? a dog??

We?ll get to find out this week ? assuming Claire makes it through the birth.
