To say that it wouldn't be able to continue without her character is wrong... and I don't think Lindsay was neccessarily a replacement for Marissa, just another guest star. Lindasy (who imo was extremly annoying and pointless) seemed very concerned about school work and less about her appearance which is kinda the opposite of Marissa. I'm not her biggest fan, but a good majority of the storylines do involve her in one way or another. And then all the Ryan/Marissa fans would be in uproar if they don't end up together. Indivdually I like them but not as a couple. But I do love Marissa's dress style. I try to copy it, when I can be bothered because she always looks so good.
