Shortland Street

I have a feeling Jay is going to fight Lei May over this one. Shes not one to think about anyone but herself. From the promo it looks as if Lei May will find out that Jay thought he was still gonna help her have a baby.

Did anyone notice the parellels between this storyline and the one in the Home and Away crash?

OMG! Yes, i was thinkinb the same thing before! I mean look at it:

There were 5 people

S= Norman, Li Mei, Eti, Scarlett and Tama

H= Chloe, Alf, Kim, Martha and Ric

Look at how similar they are:

Martha and Eti had the most inuries but didnt die.

Norman and Chloe has quite a bad injury and died.

Scarlett and tama, Ric and Alf were ok.

Li Mei and Kim had a food injury.

Do they like mix, and share storylines?

Yeah, they posted that on the offical website, everybody in the car had been to the tapu river. And the fantail stuff.

And when they have hyped up car crashes like that, the car is always, always, always full. More guessing and more suspense.

If you notice, all the people in the car went to "tapu". And Jake didnt get in the car because he never went to that tapu place. I actually just noticed that

"Tapu" is actually Maori for sacred, not to be touched, to be avoided because sacred, taboo.

yes but, the two crashes were similar. I was actually really impressed with the eposide - a big step up for shortland st. I didnt think they might pull it off as well as they did.

Jacob Tumori Q and A- Sunday Herald

Q: My typical Friday night:

A Down to the local bowls club for $3 beers and bowls under lights the home to play records and enjoy the company of my flatmates and friends.

Q Which mean on Saturday morning I’m probably:

A Sleeping in. When the weather is nice the deck gets some action. But Saturday is pretty relaxed.

Q: and breakfast is at:

A: Gloria or one of the many cafes on Ponsonby road - try the potato hash cakes

Q: Saturday evening. If my dream came true there would be a gig by:

A: Andy c on the decks and Eminem and method man on the mic. Or the up the in the smoke tour.

Q But if theses nothing else doing I’ll probably just:

A Head up to Mel’s radio show 7-9 on twisted fm 107.7 and play some tunes.

Q: Sunday morning already. So on the stereo goes:

A: Some old mellow records like the best of Mo town, Lionel Ritches or Stevie Wonder. Nothing too loud/

Q; Time to get pout for a Sunday drive to:

A: In summer, Tawharanui. Ive just been to Thailand, but Tawharanui still holds up as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It has great body-surfing conditions which is what the beach is all about. In the winter I like to get out too. But only to the top of the street to buy a juice.

Q: failing that, it to the couch to continue reading

A: the Sunday paper. Like my flatmate says. Its all the good bits of the week broken down.

Q: Sunday night. Time for a moves, Ive been dying to see

A: The worlds fastest Indian or the lion witch and wardrobe.

Blood in the street lifts soap's death toll to 14 - NZ Herald

By Claire Trevett

When Norman Hanson (Jacob Tomuri) died last night after Tama Hudson (David Wikaira-Paul) drove a car into a power pole, it was the 14th death of Shortland Street's 13-year life.

In true Shorters style the writers made it a cliffhanger, setting it up to look as if Eti Kawaka (Isaac Bell) was the character set to go before Norman had an embolism and the doctors at Shortland St were unable to save him.

"Killing off a major character is not something we take lightly because you have to play out all the consequences, such as grieving friends and family," said Shortland Street publicist Rachel Lorimer.

But while Norman was gone, there was still plenty going on.

She said the car crash would provide lots of ongoing story lines as other characters dealt with the loss.

"There's survivor guilt for the others in the car, and it is quite unusual for the doctors and nurses to try to save someone they know and fail, so it plays out with that as well. Because some are young, there will be recurrences where they remember bits of the accident. It will change the characters and provide further storylines for some time to come."

Shortland Street has often used death to tackle issues - murders, cot death, builders' negligence and natural disasters, it has had them all.

Norman's death comes 11 years after the March 1994 deaths of nurse Steve Mills and TP, who had just married Sam Aleni.

The most recent was Dominic Thompson (Shane Cortese) who burned to death in November last year.

"But Dominic was obviously a villain. It's been a few years since we've had a much-loved character die."

Dominic's death came after he took two lives himself - he hit Geoff Greenlaw on the head and left him in the Dog's Day Inn freezer to die. When Avril Lucich tried to blackmail him over it, he drowned her in a bath tub.

Shortland Street's first big murder was in March 1996 when the psychotic Carla Crozier killed her husband, Bernie, by hitting him on the head with a heavy candlestick.

"She's still in a mental health unit somewhere."

In 1999 Oscar Henry was killed when Mackenzie Choat blew up a building.

Other deaths included Darryl Nielsen, who died when Kirsty pushed him off a houseboat in April 1995. The actor, Mark Ferguson, returned as Darryl's twin brother.

Anne died at a charity function when a building collapsed in January 2004, and before her there was Tiffany, who slipped off a building while talking a suicidal patient down. Tiffany was kept on life support until the birth of her baby to Johnny Marinovich.

Then came Carmen (Theresa Healey), who died on Christmas Day in 1995 just a few days after being hit on the head when a truck crashed into the clinic.

"Carmen was a very popular character and it spoiled Christmas dinners right across New Zealand. I don't think we ever did a tragedy on Christmas Day again."

Two babies have died - in February 1997, Rose, the baby of Ellen Crozier and David Kearney, died of cot death. Last year, Tama and Shannon's baby died from an unusual infection.

Tomuri was not in the country to witness his own death - he has been on holiday since filming his death and was overseas when it screened last night.

Lorimer said it was Tomuri's decision to leave Shortland Street, but she was certain he would continue in acting.

And whoever it was, is right. I am shocked at how disrespectful Claire and Scarlett are, even though its only TV. Scarlett- for throwing on the ground, Normans ashes; and Claire- not respecting Baxters beliefs.

Next week, Tamas cousin, Whetu arrives. The one who has feelings for Shannon. Heres an article:

Tama Hudson (David Wikaira-Paul) is glad to see a face from the past when his cousin Whetu Hudson (Taungaroa Emile) arrives in town on Shortland Street this week, but Whetu's unexpected presence gets Shannon's (Amber Curreen) hackles up as her woman's intuition tells her he brings trouble.

Viewers will recognise Emile from some of his previous performances in TV2's series The Market, and the feature films; Whale Rider, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted and Once Were Warriors.

Despite his wide experience in film, Emile says that Shortland Street was no easy thing to pick up.

"It moves so fast on Shorty, and you have to be right on time. When you are making films, the cameras kind of move around the action. But here you know exactly where they are and where you are supposed to be and you have to hit your mark. It's a whole different thing, but still good fun," says Emile.

Whetu has an immediate impact on the Hudson household. His effect on Eti (Isaac Bell) in particular is instantaneous, motivating him to get off the couch where he has been languishing since the car crash.

"Whetu is really big in Eti's eyes; he's fit and strong, easy going, the girls like him and he makes a mean feed; what's not to like?" says Bell. "He's the man."

Tama is glad to have the chance to show his cousin from the North the life he is making for himself; he has a good job, a lovely wife, new baby and manages to act as a guardian to Eti.

"Tama and Whetu are competitive with each other, or they were when they were younger," Emile says. "But in a good way; they like testing each other, keeping them on their toes. It's just like that with some cousins."

It seems that only Tama's wife Shannon has reservations about Whetu's sudden arrival. Does she know more about Whetu than either of his childhood pals? For all that Tama and Eti are glad to see him, it does seem strange he should just turn up out of the blue after so many years...

And while she appreciates the importance of helping whanau, Shannon wonders just how long he intends to stay and what he actually plans to do in Ferndale, besides sleeping on her couch and messing up her kitchen. Has Whetu come to Ferndale to get something or he is running away from something - or someone?

Also, Congrats to Shorty, which was voted 'Favourite NZ TV show' at the 2005 Qantas TV Awards.
