Watching one of the first episodes on 7two and in one scene Alf is trying to invite Ailsa on a date, suggesting lunch at the pub.  
Later in another scene with Tom and Pippa Ailsa mentions that the town has 2 pubs and an RSL club and a fish and chip shop. Interesting that none of these places are ever seen.

There was the Macquarie Arms in 1994 where Shane and Tug played pool at (18, both in YR12), they didn't bother to disguise the location for the show (name visible on exterior shots)

What became of hogans store and alfs shop? 
I see the beer brands in episodes vary from fosters to tooheys and VB.  
the drinking culture in the early episodes is alive and well with the blokes often cracking a can, and Alfs bar in his lounge room always well stocked

Hogan's Store (now owned by Celia) was burned down in an arson attack. Alf went into business with Celia and opened a larger shop. That went under in early 1991

Is it unusual for blokes like Alf to drink at home rather than go to a pub to socialise?

We see Angel working in a fish and chip shop in 93. Not sure if that's in Summer Bay or Yabbie Creek though...

Pretty sure it was Yabbie Creek, by the mid 90s characters were going there for anything that wasn’t the diner or Alf’s shop lol

Definitely Summer Bay (it was named 'Summer Bay Fish & Chips').

The milk bar, or deli/corner shop was a common thing in days gone by, especially in smaller towns.

these days there are hardly any left and a dying concept as they can’t compete with the bigger companies

Speaking of Milk bars, there seemed to be one in Summer Bay. After his break-up with Sophie, Blake started going out secretly with a trainee hairdresser called Rachel. She came into the diner one day to order the lunches for the salon and said they used to use the milk bar.
