I always assumed the long-term plan for Carly would have been to become a foster mother like Bobby and Sally did, but left before that happened.

That's a very interesting theory and one which I've questioned too, Adam!

I can see it now... Ben insisting on Carly having a "proper family" as his "old man" has (complete with banging fists on wobbly sets), Carly being accused of being "so selfish" by (both incarnations of) Pippa, Bobby etc for not agreeing with him & then surprising them all by saying she wants to foster as Tom & Pippa did her.

It was remarkable how quickly Carly decided he was the right one to spend the rest of her life.

Given how fickle Carly seemed to be, it's amazing no one managed to turn her head once Ben arrived.

Many romances seemed quick in that era though.

Stacey was engaged to Andrew Foley within months of her previous fiance dying.

Bobby and Frank married after only being together for a short period and after she'd just finished school, and it fell apart just as quickly.

Pippa remarried relatively quickly after Tom died, though admittedly the change of actress probably distanced Pippa from her from Tom (if that makes sense!).

I think many of us wish that someone else DID turn her head post-Ben; for Carly's sake!

Watching the 1988 season on 7Plus, I'm noticing the tables getting used more frequently as the series goes on for dine-in coffee and chats. I've even noticed Roo and Morag at the outdoor tables, which I can't recall either way whether or not they were there from the start.

With the increased demand for dine-in coffee and the new producers' desire to give the show a younger appeal, it's hardly surprising they decided to make the leap to a more buzzing cafe/Diner.
