Watching some of the earlier years not too long ago I always thought The Sands was going be a bigger part of the show then it ever was. Kinda like Home and Away's Lassiters. Did they just change their minds?

During the whole run of the show did it ever really come into play? I can't remember the last time it was mentioned.

I guess it made sense with having the caravan park for accommodation, but even now that's not really used. Would anyone like to see it become a proper set used for storylines and jobs? Again like Lassiters is in Neighbours?

I wouldn't mind. The last time I remember it going something impactful was Penn Graham's death happening in The Sands. Can't remember much more of it since. When was the last time we heard or saw it?

The Macklin Corporation kind of just fizzled out, perhaps because every character involved left - Frank, Roo, Stacey and Tom. Tom kept working there until he had his stroke, but it had pretty much run its course in my opinion. Maybe if Tom or Stacey didn't exit permanently, it would have been revived. Or at least kept as career for Tom, but only seen when the plot required.

When did they resurrect the Sands Resort? It went bankrupt in April 1993 and wasn't mentioned after that.

I'm sure it's been mentioned in passing in the mid-late 90s. Mostly just references to guest characters staying there, but never seen. "Upper class" characters like Diana Fraser who would never have stayed at the Caravan Park. I might be wrong though.

You're right, It did get some mentions in the late 90s, I know they wanted to buy out Travis's whalewatching business at one point. Though offhand I don't think it was actually seen again until 2003, at the time of Dani's trial.

Then again quite prominently from 2007 (pre-Sam & Jack's wedding, then later Kirsty working there) through to around 2010 with the whole Penn thing.

Our filming location pages are quite useful in that regard:

The Sands Resort (1989-91, 2007)
The Sands Resort (2003)
The Sands Resort (2007 onwards)

It was mentioned briefly in 1996. Senator Katherine Walker (who turned out to be Shannon's biological mother) visited, booked into the caravan park and Michael commented something along the lines of "wouldn't you be more suited to the Macklin resort?" (yes, that's right, the surname was also mentioned along with the resort itself!).

Diana: Good heavens, A lady of my calibre couldn't would not be seen dead in an establishment like this. No offence meant, of course

Cue indignant glare from Pippa or the Nashes.  James shakes his  head and is all "You'll have to excuse my mother, she has a bad case of foot-in-mouth disease!"

(I know past characters all too well  lol)

Michael Ross and Alf's missus and his ex-wife Cynthia went away for the weekend to the Sands Resort in the early nineties. They spent the evening sitting at the sort of tables and chairs you'd find on somebody's balcony, not an establishment that was supposedly the last word in opulence. A few years later, he and Pippa made a return trip when things were going wrong at home. She made a point of saying she'd booked them into the Second Best restaurant there. Unfortunately, we never got to see what this downgrade looked like. Were they sitting on crates and using plastic tableware?
