Ooh I love Paul Simon.....

Here is my favourite Simon and Garfunkle song. So beautiful.

The Sound of Silence:

Hello darkness, my old friend,

I’ve come to talk with you again,

Because a vision softly creeping,

Left it’s seeds while I was sleeping,

And the vision that was planted in my brain

Still remains

Within the sound of silence.

In restless dreams I walked alone

Narrow streets of cobblestone,

’neath the halo of a street lamp,

I turned my collar to the cold and damp

When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of

A neon light

That split the night

And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw

Ten thousand people, maybe more.

People talking without speaking,

People hearing without listening,

People writing songs that voices never share

And no one deared

Disturb the sound of silence.

Fools said i,you do not know

Silence like a cancer grows.

Hear my words that I might teach you,

Take my arms that I might reach you.

But my words like silent raindrops fell,

And echoed

In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed

To the neon God they made.

And the sign flashed out it’s warning,

In the words that it was forming.

And the signs said, the words of the prophets

Are written on the subway walls

And tenement halls.

And whisper’d in the sounds of silence.

EDIT:

Hmmm, I would definetly put the Beatles up as ONE of the best musical acts of all times, but I feel that the Kinks get criminally overlooked for this position. The Beatles actually nicked alot of their, supposedly original, musical style from the Kinks.  Alot of the Beatles' experimental stuff came from the Kinks early work.

And surely there is no more perfect a pop song than Waterloo Sunset?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Oh, wow, to quote a certain someone  "You took the words right out of my mouth"!!! I never get round to putting any fave lyrics here (too many!), but, yeh, this and "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "American Tune" and "The Boxer" would be my fave S&G plus Paul Simon's "Graceland", "Boy in the Bubble", "Homeless", "Under AFrican Skies", "Born at the Right Time", "Take Me to the Mardi Gras"...*has to stop or would go on forever*

Didn't know about the Beatles connection with the Kinks *is impressed* :). I remember hearing on the radio once that the original title of "Waterloo Sunset" was "Liverpool Sunset" but at the time apparently there were too many songs about Liverpool.

"Lola" was a very catchy tune. And I loved "Come Dancing" - wasn't that The Kinks too?

Yes indeed, "Come Dancing" was a Kink's tune.

Didn't know that about Waterloo Sunset...."Liverpool Sunset's fine....." just doesn't quite have the same ring does it? :D

Ray Davies has also since siad that the characters were originally going to be called "Bernard and Margaret", but again, not quite as romantic as Terry and Julie is it?

I have a particular affinity with the Kinks because they grew up in my hometown, very near me actually. Plus they are fantastic.

Mmmm....I love all those S&G songs too....right now I am listening to "Cecilia"....and singing along....

I remember my wee cousin being very into that song at the age of about 3 and she knew every single word. Very cute, bless.

THE PRETENDERS - HUMAN

I play a good game

But not as good as you

I can be a little cold

But you can be so cruel

I'm not made of brick

I'm not made of stone

But I had you fooled enough to take me on

If love was a war

It's you who has won

While I was confessing it

You held your tongue

Now the damage is done

Well there's blood in these veins

and I cry when in pain

I'm only human on the inside

And if looks could deceive

Make it hard to believe

I'm only human on the inside

I thought you'd come through

I thought you'd come clean

You were the best thing, I should never have seen

But you go to extremes

You push me too far

Then you keep going til you break my heart

Yeah, you break my heart

See I bleed and I bruise

Oh, but what's it to you

I'm only human on the inside

And if looks could deceive

Make it hard to believe

I'm only human on the inside

I crash and I burn

Maybe someday you'll learn

I'm only human on the inside

I stumble I fall

Baby, under it all

I'm only human on the inside

TOTO - Africa Lyrics

I hear the drums echoing tonight

But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation

She's coming in twelve-thirty flight

Her moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards

salvation

I stopped an old man along the way

Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies

He turned to me as if to say: "Hurry boy, it's waiting there for

you"

[Chorus:]

It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you

There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do

I bless the rains down in Africa

Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

The wild dogs cry out in the night

As they grow restless longing for some solitary company

I know that I must do what's right

Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti

I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that

I've become

[Repeat chorus]

[instrumental break]

Hurry boy, she's waiting there for you

Europe - The Final Countdown

We're leaving together

but still it's farewell

and maybe we'll come back,

to earth, who can tell?

I guess there is no one to blame

we're leaving ground (leaving ground)

will things ever be the same again?

It's the final countdown.

The final countdown.

Oh, We're heading for Venus

and still we stand tall

cause maybe they've seen us

and welcome us all

with so many light years to go

and things to be found (to be found)

I'm sure that we'll all miss her so

It's the final countdown.

The final countdown.

The final countdown (final countdown).

oh...oh

The final countdown.

oh...oh

It's the final countdown.

The final countdown.

The final countdown. (final countdown)

It's the final countdown

we're leaving together

the final countdown

we'll all miss her so

It's the final countdown (final countdown)

oh, it's the final countdown.

"Always" - Bon Jovi

This romeo is bleeding

But you can't see his blood

It's nothing but some feelings

That this old dog kicked up

It's been raining since you left me

Now I'm drowning in the flood

You see I've always been a fighter

But without you I give up

Now I can't sing a love song

Like the way it's meant to be

Well, I guess I'm not that good anymore

But baby, that's just me

And I will love you, baby - Always

And I'll be there forever and a day - Always

I'll be there till the stars don't shine

Till the heavens burst and

The words don't rhyme

And I know when I die, you'll be on my mind

And I'll love you - Always

Now your pictures that you left behind

Are just memories of a different life

Some that made us laugh, some that made us cry

One that made you have to say goodbye

What I'd give to run my fingers through your hair

To touch your lips, to hold you near

When you say your prayers try to understand

I've made mistakes, I'm just a man

When he holds you close, when he pulls you near

When he says the words you've been needing to hear

I'll wish I was him 'cause those words are mine

To say to you till the end of time

Yeah, I will love you baby - Always

And I'll be there forever and a day - Always

If you told me to cry for you

I could

If you told me to die for you

I would

Take a look at my face

There's no price I won't pay

To say these words to you

Well, there ain't no luck

In these loaded dice

But baby if you give me just one more try

We can pack up our old dreams

And our old lives

We'll find a place where the sun still shines

And I will love you, baby - Always

And I'll be there forever and a day - Always

I'll be there till the stars don't shine

Till the heavens burst and

The words don't rhyme

And I know when I die, you'll be on my mind

And I'll love you - Always

:(:(:(

Yah, I am Smiths fanatic. Mozza is my hero.  Cool to see someone with good taste!

But......Not even Strawberry Fields??? Come on, the Beatles were awesome!

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yeh, I agree. They're not exactly my favourite band - I like so many singers and groups - but they're definitely right up there with all my other faves like Meatloaf, Queen, Paul Simon, Credence Clearwater Revival, Smokey Robinson, Beautiful South, Human League etc etc etc...

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Dolly Parton...

A lot of people on here seem to like really old stuff.

Neil Young is the only artist from back then that I'm really into. And Queen of course but everybody likes Queen.
