UK: Man Found Dead as Coldest Weather in 10 Years Bites

Source: AOL News

Police fear a man in his 40s found dead on the steps of West Bromwich Town Hall froze to death as the wintry weather promises to bring more heavy snow.

The current cold snap is "saving the worst to last'', according to forecasters as a number of places recorded some of the coldest daytime temperatures for several years.

Some regions saw the temperature rise no higher than minus 7C (19F) even by 4pm on Thursday.

North East England was particularly badly hit with the thermometer failing to pass that mark at Teesside Airport and Redesdale in Northumberland.

One of the first victims of the cold weather was a man in his 40s found dead on the steps of West Bromwich Town Hall, police said. They feared he had frozen to death.

PA WeatherCentre spokesman Paul Knightley said: "Many places could get a couple of inches of snow and there could be up to four inches in East Anglia, the East Midlands, north east England and Scotland.

"It's going to be pretty awful in the Scottish Highlands as winds will be strengthening. They could reach 35mph, creating blizzard conditions.

"This cold snap is saving the worst to last, but as we move through Friday the snow will turn to rain and by Saturday it will be milder, but windy.''

The Highways Agency advised drivers to check weather forecasts before setting out on journeys. But few people seemed keen to venture out, with the RAC reporting very quiet roads as many people continued their Christmas holidays or worked from home.

Milder!!!! Yaaayyy!!!! :D Don't like the sound of the wind tho. :(

Give me rain instead of cold any day. Just as long as it doesn't make it slippy...

By way of contrast, where I live in South Eastern Oz today was 41.8 degrees Celsius and the next two day are forecast to be similar. We are dealing with grass and scrub fires spread over a wide area.
