katya Posted May 23, 2006 Report Posted May 23, 2006 Now that I'm not reading for uni anymore I have so many books to get through! I'm gonna start with White Teeth, then Vernon God Little, then Lolita and then I'll see what I feel like. Oh it's bliss!
Emma_B Posted May 23, 2006 Report Posted May 23, 2006 Loved White Teeth, really really loved Lolita, but I wasn't too keen on Vernon God Little. I didn't finish it, which is not like me at all! I normally sticki things out to the bitter end but I couldn't get into it. I have finished my silly Chick Lit book now but I don't have anything else new to read, because I'm meant to be revising. I might revisit some old favourites. The Lovely Bones, maybe.

I remember my Mum read a book with a title sounding like that and it turned out to be really sad and she sat there crying!
.Cat. Posted May 23, 2006 Report Posted May 23, 2006 Now reading: The Second summer of the sisterhood (sequel to the Sisterhood of the traveling pants)
Skydreamer Posted May 23, 2006 Report Posted May 23, 2006 I ought to read far more than I do, especially as I'm studying English literature for my AS levels (although I want to drop it asap - but that's a different story). I'm currently reading Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder - it's on my philosophy reading list. First few chapters are really text-book-like - I read a few of the later chapters (naughty, I know) and it was far more interesting. I'm a Harry Potter junkie too - my family knows that when a new book comes out that I am not to be disturbed for anything until I have completed it. Each time I try and see if I can complete the next book faster than the previous one - doesn't help that they keep getting bigger - but I can always finish them before the end of the day that I start reading them now (assuming I'm not distracted) : ) I love the Bridget Jones books - all I did over Christmas was read and re-read them! When I couldn't be bothered to read "Persuasion" for English, I re-read Bridget Jones 2 to remind myself of the plot. I quite like Austen, but she's a really slow starter (maybe something that her contemporaries would have had more sympathy with, but not me), which is why Bridget Jones wins each time. I bought myself a copy of Jane Eyre a while back and I really want to read it but time is just escaping me - especially with exams now. My English exam is on Friday and I have't actually finished reading Persuasion - I know the plot and have read all of the analysis, but the last two chapters remain unread! (Before anyone starts telling me off panic mode is already making sure I know how stupid that is.) My other English texts are As You Like It (Shakespeare) and The Franklin's Tale (Chaucer - how it can be called English literature when it hardly resembles English really frustrates me). I was told by my English teacher that the time traveller's wife was a good one to try, so I might try to track down a copy at some point. On the other hand, Dan Brown books are taboo in discussion at my school - unless you're the kind of person who reads anything - the RE department goes to great lengths to remind us its fiction. I'm hence a little stuck - because I'm intrigued as to what all the hype is about, but if I read the book or see the film I'll never hear the end of it. I read Little Women and wasn't that keen on it - everyone kept having a go at me saying "wasn't it sad when Beth died?" and refused to hear me out when I told them Beth didn't die in Little Women. I read it five times (different versions - the same book would just be pointless) and bought Good Wives just to prove them wrong!! I'm more of a non-fiction person though - the last few books I bought were to do with politics, religion and history - and they're now being of great use for my exams, if not that great a distraction. Has anyone here read Book of Shadows by Phyllis (forgive me if the spelling's wrong) Currot? It's brilliant is all I can say - I met her once and she's really funny and kind. OK, I'll stop here - I've gone on for long enough!

Yeah, my sister loved that book, and also said it was really sad. Still have to get around to reading that eventually.
furrylogic Posted May 23, 2006 Report Posted May 23, 2006 Now reading: The Second summer of the sisterhood (sequel to the Sisterhood of the traveling pants) Haha one of my favourite books, along with the first and third!!! I read them over and over again. The Lovely Bones was great too, I did cry. Right now Im reading "The Tenth Circle" By Jodi Picoult, she's an awesome author. I read her books "My sisters keeper" and "The Pact" and basically cried on and off the entire time. They're interesting stories that seem to cross between courtroom stuff to current issues like suicide in teenagers or stem cell research/cloaning.
MarMar Posted May 24, 2006 Author Report Posted May 24, 2006 Now that I'm not reading for uni anymore I have so many books to get through! I'm gonna start with White Teeth, then Vernon God Little, then Lolita and then I'll see what I feel like. Oh it's bliss! Know the feeling! I only have 1 more exam (two orals at the same time), so now I'm going to read what I want to read. Read Lolita when I was 12, and many times after that, but I can recommend it. Read White Teeth for my English Lit. course this semester. Highly recommended! I'm just about to start Now That You Know: What Every Parent Should Know about Homosexuality, after that it will be Stiff.
katya Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 I read Little Women and wasn't that keen on it I had to read Little Women for uni this year and I wasn't really looking forward to it, but I have to say I loved it! I'd tried to read it before when I was younger and couldn't get into it, but I really enjoyed it. I loved the characterisation, and when you get below all the moralistic stuff it's a really interesting book.
