Pete's girl Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 Can anyone recommend a good book for me? I want to get more into modern literature as I studied Eng Lit at Uni an was reading all 19th stuff for ages. I recently read The Secret History and The little friend by Donna Tartt and liked them very much. I hate depressing, gloomy "gritty" novels though or stuff with loads of violence. Can anyone recommend anything?
zzazzb Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 Twilight (currently obsessed ) do you have a favourite book, or style??
Pete's girl Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 What's Twilight about? I'm not sure what style I'm into really. Not really into the slow moving type of books where not much happens. Also I'm not keen at all on writers like John Grisham. The Donna Tartt ones were perfect - very interesting, gripping even and intelligently written but not brutal or crude. I loved The Woman in White but that's going back to the 19th centuary again!
solaris Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 ^^ If you like action, take a look at Robert Ludlum. If you like things are a bit 'out of the main stream' Alyssa Day, Sherrilyn Kenyon and Laurell K hamilton (don't touch any of them if you're under 18) Kathy Kelly is also good.
whispered_envy Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 I'm currently reading this book I randomly stumbled across at the local library called 'The Penguin Who Knew Too Much', by Donna Andrews. I only chose it because I love penguins, and there were penguins on the front cover. It's turned out not be be a bad book thus far (although not much about penguins )- it's a murder mystery, and I don't usually care for them, but this one has humour throughout it, which makes it ten times better.
Pete's girl Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 What kind of murder mystery is it? I love murder mysteries but more along the lines of Agatha Christie rather than the gruesome ones.
whispered_envy Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 It's pretty light hearted, lots of humour as the main character tries to deal with her eclectic family and the strange people who rock up after the body is found...I haven't finished reading it as of yet- I'm about two thirds of the way through- so I don't know if the ending is any good!
bay girl Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 Im in the middle of reading Eclipse; the third book in the Twilight series.
valli Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 I'm reading The Hunger Games. I've only just started, so I can't really say if it's good or not. But according to Stephanie Meyer it is good
