Don't Mind Me
|
|
Character:
Louise Stevens is a relief teacher at Summer Bay High; she is
lodging at Irene’s house, and they are great mates. Louise is
in her late 40’s, a fantastic and popular computer studies teacher
- what she does not know about computers is not worth knowing.
Attractive, strong minded and fun, she clams up about her past
and is intensely secretive about visits she occasionally makes
to a young woman who lives in the city. Morag’s instincts tell
her she knows her from somewhere, and she has been hell bent
on unearthing Louise’s secret.
Scene: Don’t Mind Me!
INT. THE BEACH HOUSE – EARLY EVENING
Louise is in the main room, she is rushing about frantically
packing her bags after receiving a phone call from Morag.
Irene comes down the stairs.
IRENE
What’s all the kerfuffle?
Lou?
LOUISE
I have to leave..my daughter..she is ill..
IRENE
(concerned)
Daughter? You never mentioned her before..I hope it’s nothing
serious.
LOUISE
No it’s not Serious .. but... ... well ..its complicated.
Irene looks bemused.
IRENE
Well I’m all ears darl.
Morag enters, and realises what Louse is planning to do.
MORAG
(emphasising Louise’s surname)
Going somewhere Miss Stevens?
Louise looks furious. Irene looks confused.
Morag places her brief case on the table.
LOUISE
You really are a piece of work Morag. You could not leave well
alone could you?
MORAG
Can you blame me?
LOUISE
I can actually. You have absolutely no idea what you are doing.
MORAG.
(emphasizing
surname)
Oh, I think I do Miss Stevens.
IRENE
Would someone like to tell me what’s going on?
Louise and Morag ignore Irene.
MORAG
You think you have been rather clever don’t you? This whole
sharade has been quite audacious. I am almost impressed. I am
sure our friends in the constabulary will enjoy following all
those false trails. You really should have made more of an effort
to change your appearance though. That was rather careless of
you.
IRENE
Careless? Appearance? I don’t understand.
They continue to ignore Irene who throws her hands up in frustration.
LOUISE
No one needed to know. No one NEEDS to know!
MORAG
Tell that to your husband and daughter.
Irene is surprised.
IRENE
Husband? Gawd save us Lou, how many more rellies are you gonna
spring on us?
They continue to bicker and to ignore Irene,
LOUISE
Leave my daughter out of this.
MORAG
Don’t play the loving mother with me Miss Stevens. I know different.
What about her father? I assume she is your husband’s child?
LOUISE
She is. Not that it’s any of your business.
MORAG
NO. But it is HIS business. He obviously has no idea that she
exists.
Irene is getting more and more curious and frustrated.
IRENE
Who ..what are you ta ..
LOUISE
(interrupting)
No.And he is not going to.
Irene gives up. She sighs audibly and heavily. She marches into
the kitchen and makes a point of banging cups and pots about.
They take no notice and continue to bicker.
MORAG
Oh, he is going to know Miss Stevens. Believe me he is.
IRENE
(muttering whilst
they talk)
Don’t mind me …I only live here!
LOUISE
No. He can’t know.
MORAG
Give me one good reason why not?
Irene comes back in from the kitchen area.
She is annoyed.
IRENE
(forcefully)
Right…that’s it. Enough. Will somebody please tell me what is
going on before I bang your flippin heads together!
Louise and Morag look at Irene. Surprised. They had forgotten
her presence. Louise looks beseechingly at Morag. Morag is unmoved.
MORAG
Of course Irene. My apologies.
Where should I start Miss Stevens? There are so many things
which need explaining are there not? Such an interesting story
too.
LOUISE
Morag…don’t…
IRENE
Well?
MORAG
Well indeed. The list is endless. So I will be brief. I believe
hacking into government systems to set up a false identity carries
a hefty penalty these days. I have also found in the course
of a long and successful career that perverting the course of
justice is something to which the courts take a very dim view.
Morag looks from Louise to Irene. Irene is bemused.
Louise looks resigned.
MORAG
Let me see. What else is there? Oh yes. Impersonating a school
teacher .... I assume those exceptional qualifications were
also acquired illegally. And finally ... There is the little
matter of .. (pause) .. MURDER.
IRENE
(she is looking worried)
Murder?
MORAG
Indeed.
LOUISE
Don’t please..it’s not what you think.
MORAG
(sarcastically)
“Its not what I think?”...how original. Surely you can do better
than that Miss Stevens.
Morag goes to her brief case. She removes an envelope and hands
the content to Irene.
MORAG
(sarcastically)
Irene, you see before you a ghost it seems.
Irene looks at the photograph which Morag has given her.
IRENE
I’ve seen this before .. at the trial..in the papers..what has
it got to do with Lou?
Morag looks questioningly at her. Irene looks again. Realisation
dawns. Disbelief registers on her face as she looks between
Louise and the photograph.
IRENE
But ...... But ....
MORAG
Exactly!
Irene’s face registers shock and dismay as she looks at Louise.
The photo falls from her hand to the floor.
We see the photograph. It is a photograph of Barry and Kerry
Hyde on their wedding day. Louise Stevens is Kerry Hyde. |
